Very nice stay here recently and as Hilton Honours customers were upgraded to premium room which was fab. Staff ever helpful and hotel had easy access to taxis and just over the street to Princess Street and views of the Castle. Lovely breakfast and only wish I had taken advantage of specially cooked item like omelette or egg Benedict.......but then...

For a pair of special occasions we pushed the boat out and took a junior suite overlooking the castle and which was on the top floor. The cost was quite steep but the quality of the room, the fixtures and fittings and the general comfort of the room were all from the top drawer. We had a very agreeable lounge...

We loved the hotel! The level of service started out very high with a very helpful porter going out to our car, which my husband was waiting in the car around the corner, to get our luggage while I was checking in! And it continued to be excellent through out our stay!

For the sake of truth, I will say that, as a Gold or Diamond Member, one receives a discount of approximately 42% on the price of the full breakfast. To me this is a sign of a snobbish attitude as if Waldorf Astorias wanted to show that they would be better than 'usual' Hilton Hotels. Well, if they were, they...

The title should say it all really. When you go to he Waldorf you expect the silver service coupled with the grandiose ambience and exquisite dining experience. Well that it definitely delivered. From the moment we stepped in we couldn't fault the attentive service. The champagne to start along with the savouries, sweet and tea selections were out of this...

My husband booked a room here for a weekend for my 40th birthday. Greeted very nicely on arrival. The room we had was gorgeous and I even had a little birthday fruit in the room on arrival. The turn down service and chocolates were amazing. Breakfast was plentiful and amazing, a lovely chatty chef called Robbie was often walking around....

The location is very convenient in terms of access to Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, train stations, shops and restaurants. The lobby, lounges and other common areas are well-appointed with opulent furnishings. However, the hallways on the guest floors could use a little touching up. Our premier queen castle view room was clean and functional, but not as luxurious as...

We had a delightful stay at the Caledonian. The hotel's location was perfect, with stunning views of the castle and town. The indoor pool was a hit with our children and the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Everything you expect from a Waldorf Astoria, rooms having nice decor and good facilities. Only slight problem during my stay was on the second day after leaving the hotel after breakfast, we returned at 2.30pm to find the room hadn't been serviced. After reporting to front desk it was remedied fairly quickly, but it was as unnecessary inconvenience.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
