We had one night here on our way up to the Highlands, the welcome was very warm and friendly and the staff very obliging. We had a standard room and were allocated 'Willi Optiz' which has a wonderful view down to the Royal Mile and was very comfortable. There was not too much time for exploring Edinburgh during our short...

wonderful 4/5 star service: all the staff are eastern european so I didnt get any local scottish hospitality: but the staff did try so hard! especially the receptionist Lucas at the front: he really did try and enthuse about Edinburgh and suggested places to visit and also which bus to catch where which was very useful! the hotel was not...

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a long weekend and we can't rave about it enough. The room had a chic boutique feel, with a very comfortable bed and luxurious Ren toiletries. Breakfast was also great. The hotel itself was in the perfect location in the Old Town, just around the corner from Edinburgh Castle – we managed to...

My Partner and I stayed at the Hotel Du Vin Edinburgh for Easter Weekend for three nights in a superior room. All in all, the hotel is nice, clean and in a superb location for exploring the city! Walking distance to all the great sights like the castle, museums etc. However, I felt this hotel lacked the service to match...

I had an overnight stay here with my mum for her birthday and it was absolutely wonderful. The staff were the real highlight as they could not have done more to make us feel welcome and comfortable. We had a drink in the gorgeous bar, and a chat with the charming bar manager, then an excellent meal in the restaurant....

Me and my wife have been traveling for 10 days in Scotland during Easter. Our first stop was Edinburgh. To arrive at Hotel du Vin & Bistro was a pleasure at once we came in the door. We got an excellent room at the top floor called Mouton-Rothschild, with everything you could possibly was of luxury. I really recommend that...

We visited the Bistro using a voucher for a Champagne Lunch. We were seated then asked to move as they had put us to the wrong table. Another waitress came along and said that we didn't need to move so was a bit embarrassing. Food on the whole was good but the duck ragout contained 2 very small pieces of...

Dear Capella37a Thank you for taking the time to feedback on TA, our apologies again for the confusion with the seating. It's great to hear that you enjoyed your food apart from the duck ragout, which I will be sure to highlight our to our Chef - so thank you for highlighting. With very best wishes Lisa S

We stayed here for one night. Food at the restaurant was good, as expected. Our room was gorgeous. Cozy and traditional with all contemporary mod-cons needed. The bathroom was beautiful, oozed luxury and the room was very comfortable. Our stay was very short but very sweet. Staff were attentive. I would like to have a little more time here next...

We stayed here for a Friday and sat night on our first trip to Edinburgh - the location is good - 5 mins walk to the Royal Mile and just far enough to not be noisy with revellers. The room was small and slightly tired. Reception staff were friendly but there were little touches missing for the money! The waiter...

The hotel occupies multiple buildings in what was once an insane asylum. That fact alone made it an appropriate choice for our family. The building is unique. We had a top floor room accessed by taking a lift to the 2nd floor, then taking stairs to the 3rd floor. Our room was luxurious and private. The hotel was chosen by...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
