Recently stayed at York House whilst attending a 4 day course. Excellent location and good price for a Capital City at £31.50 per night. Very friendly staff, room had everything you need and was very clean. Shared shower room toilet was fine. Wifi even worked in my room. This hotel could be even better if the owners spent a relatively...

The location of this B&B is perfect for a visit to Edinburgh. The staff were average, we were not welcomed to the place, just shown the basics of how to get in and out of the front door and directed to the room. Breakfast was acceptable, but the toaster did not work. Often serving spoons were not supplied or forgotten....

ideal for access to Princess Street but this is its only plus factor. Had basement room which was very dark with bars on the window and not one bedside lamp. However the bedding was clean but certainly no luxuries. They charge £7 for breakfast forget it eat better food in town better standard and cheaper. The sausages were cheap we...

Where do i start honestly, not cheap by any means, but clean room and bedding, however thats about where it ends. Cold as anything with no heating on, noisy as hell with single glazed windows have hardly slept at all. Roadworks outside till 1am just dreadful. Can hear every noise outside. Curtains dont cover window. Bed broken, base collapsing. Mattress...

I just had a one night stay here in the single bedroom with shared bathroom. I do travel a few times a month for business so am well accustomed to this sort of accommodation. Overall it's perfectly fine. The bedroom was tiny, bed wasn't fantastic, finish around the buildings was tired, but look, it did the job and as expected....

When I originally booked the room, which was a single standard one, i did not know i would not have my own bathroom and toilet facilities. I was then told i would be able to have this but in a separate room across the corridor. No problem, i thought only to find out these facilities were in a room with...

This b and b is in an absolutely fabulous location (ten minutes walk from the train station). The bad part is that they don't have a lift on offer so some of our party stayed on the top level and it's a few levels of stairs to master, in failing that though the rooms are comfortable and very spacious. Many...

Where do I Start...? Ok, its a 2 star more hotel than a B & B, but I would still expect some semblance of Cleanliness & decent décor. it was a Twin room, one bed's headboard was hanging off the wall, the lighting was poor & dim, The Tv remote fell apart when used. The shower curtain was about a...

I don't like being negative. But I travel extensively and this was perhaps one of the worst hotels I have stayed in, in a very long time. I wanted to share the below with you, as I wouldn't recommend this hotel. 1) Noise: you can hear everything from the next door room. The guests weren't making a huge amount of...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
