Macdonald Norwood Hall Hotel boasts a charming, old-world atmosphere that many guests find luxurious and inviting, with particular praise for its Scottish decor. However, some guests feel the hotel doesn't provide good value, pointing to pricey food and drinks alongside underwhelming rooms. While the service is often friendly, there are occasional lapses in attention and speed. The rooms themselves receive mixed reviews; while they are typically spacious, noise and maintenance issues have been a concern for some travelers. Despite these inconsistencies, the hotel's ambiance and dining still manage to impress.

We enjoyed two nights at Norwood Hall in a king room, choosing the hotel for their Hogmanay gala dinner with a ceilidh band. We were with a small group of friends and thoroughly enjoyed our gala experience. The ceilidh band were excellent, as were the piper and fireworks display at midnight followed by a disco that went on until 2 am. The only minor grumble was the price of drinks which were eye-watering even though we’re used to London prices. We had been pre-warned though so stocked up at the nearby Sainsbury’s for some pre-dinner cocktails in the room with ice provided by room service.

The hotel itself is an old Victorian mansion and I particularly loved the crackling fires, creaking floorboards and wood panelling throughout the ground floor. It was warm, cosy and inviting, especially returning after a bracing walk. Although we didn’t get round to using them, there are several lounges dotted about where you can sit for a drink, chat or to read.

Our king room was spacious with a window overlooking the countryside that belied our urban location. In fact the room was so quiet and the blackout curtains so effective it would have been easy to miss breakfast if we hadn’t set an alarm. There’s a tea tray and kettle in the room and the staff were happy to provide fresh milk if needed.

Breakfast was delicious with hot food and drinks ordered and served to you with cold options on a buffet for you to help yourself. Service was always good and we were never rushed out when we lingered chatting at the table.

All in all a very nice stay and a very enjoyable Hogmanay break.

My wife and I have stayed at this Macdonald hotel on three occasions recently whilst on business in Aberdeen. The hotel exceeded all our expectations for the price that we paid. The rooms that we stayed in were all excellently equipped taking into account covid constraints. There was reduced room servicing because of covid but the hotel gave an ample supply of towels , tea ,coffee and toilet rolls plus bed linen etc just as we required. The staff were all very pleasant and the breakfast was very good. Although it is restricted to table service at present they bring you exactly what you ask for. Parking is excellent and wifi is superb. The hotel feels like you are in the countryside without traffic noise and it is hard to believe that you are only a few minutes from the city centre. my only constructive critisism of the hotel is that Macdonalds advertise that direct booking is the cheapest. I did not find this so. I asked on the occasion of our last stay 2 weeks ago for their very best rate for exactly what booking . comm offer thus comparing apples with apples .Macdonalds price after them having a" board meeting" in the reservations department came down eventually to £371 (5 nights, 2 people)for a classic room and inability to commit themselves to an upgrade at the time of booking. I subsequently booked with booking .com for £304 and received an upgrade to an executive room. Would definitely stay here again if I had business in Aberdeen.

The hotel has a lovely garden & you don't really realise that you are not right in the country. Rooms are very quiet

Bumpy start on arrival after a long drive- i had not picked up the messages from the hotel asking to book dinner timings in advance so only offered 5.30 dinner & 8.30 or 10.30 at breakfast- a suggestion that did not go down well. The alternatives were not explained well (dinner in the bar & room service breakfast) which once identified were fine. In the event maitre d in the restaurant squeezed us in anyway without us asking.

After that things looked up fast. Large comfortable clean room with a good bed.

Lovely paneled restaurant with friendly helpful staff. Really good choice of food prepared well for dinner & breakfast was great too. Room service breakfast was fresh & on time

The hotel has been offering very good dinner b&b rates and I thought excellent value. Reflecting this you might need to be fast to get a weekend booking

The hotel has managed to keep a bar lounge going in these covid times & overall its a very comfortable hotel with bright & breezy staff.

Recomended especially if you can get a great deal. Go soon before the hotel ups its rates!

On driving up to the property it looks lovely, reception all very nice.
I was placed in a dated ground floor room(I didn’t think women travelling alone were placed in ground floor rooms anymore)
My room was so disappointing, it was freezing as the radiator was off on such a freezing cold day. I asked for a heater which was put in my room whilst I was at dinner which was definitely a plus
Food in the bar was very average and expensive with one poor waiter rushed off his feet therefore making service slow and inattentive.
The room has no plug point at bedside so if you use your phone as an alarm or to check the time you’ll need to be in and out of bed to check the time.
Shower temperature went from cold to luke warm, not a great start at 6am
Breakfast was expensive at £20!! But what I had was nice
At check out no one even asked how my stay was, I’m assuming that they didn’t want to know or knew the response already

Will definitely never return as there are many better options in Aberdeen where you can stay far more comfortably

Visited for an afternoon tea for two which was on an Itison voucher. We were seated in a small room which hadn’t seen a decorator in the past 20 years with water stains on the roof and walls. We handed over the voucher to the waitress and she swiftly left with it. Upon return she asked if we would like tea or coffee and then if we would like our Prosecco or champagne to which we said Prosecco, one of us were driving so lucky for the second person as they got two glasses! The tea and coffee arrived shortly followed by the Prosecco and then followed the sandwiches and cakes. The sandwiches were very poor with the choices of egg mayonnaise, ham, cheese and pickle or tuna.. it’s an afternoon tea we are here for, not a kids party! The scones and cakes were however very appetising hence the 2 stars and not just the one. About 15 minutes into our stay the waitress came back to check on everything and asked if we needed anything else. This was the last contact we had with anyone for the remaining hour we were there.. nobody came and checked on us nobody came to clear plates or glasses we were just sat in a room forgotten about! After trying to find someone and just giving up we left. Nearly arriving at the car we were shouted down by a new waiter exclaiming we hadn’t paid! Shocked we returned to the reception area to say we had handed our voucher over at the start and that the waitress took it away. It later turned out that we were due to pay for the Prosecco!!! Shocked and very annoyed at the fact the waitress offered us the Prosecco AFTER taking away our voucher and that it was rolled off at the same time as the tea and coffee and not offered as an “upgrade”. All in all the experience wasn’t very good and won’t be recommending. Especially after having to pay £8 a glass for very ordinary and cheap tasting Prosecco after it not being offered as an upgrade.

The hotel and setting are really awesome with fantastic old features and the feel of luxury.
The Check in and check out experiences were very professional and smooth.
The room we had was very spacious and most comfortable, spotlessly clean and well presented ensuring we had a total restful and sound sleep.
Bathroom was the same, very spacious with a very large shower cubicle, separate bath again was spotless and gleaming
The evening dining experience was also very high standard, we were on a DB+B which included a three course meal which we thoroughly enjoyed.
We then made our way to the very majestic lounge bar, fantastic, elegant and very comfortable.
The only downside was a very shambolic breakfast. Quite a lot of the cold buffet was finished and had not been replenished and we had to wait a good few minutes when we asked a member of staff if we could have some fresh fruit salad and orange juice.
When we came back for the hot buffet it was the same if not worse several items had not been replaced and a manager was trying his best to rectify the situation but was really up against it, he had asked another member of staff to inform kitchen the items needed replenished but the manager eventually had to apologise and head for the kitchen as it was still not forthcoming. When we did get our breakfast the scrambled egg was cold and like rubber, one sausage was hot and one Luke warm unfortunately this was a shame because the items that were fresh and hot were good quality. Although this was well below acceptable it would not put me off going back to this establishment as I am sure this would not be the norm and circumstances caused this to be so poor at least ten minutes wait on hot buffet.
Sad end to a great stay.

Norwood Hall is the perfect location to take the family for a glorious much needed break. Our family of two adults and three children were served incredibly well and emerged feeling refreshed. The grounds on approach provide an impressive beginning with the undulating landscape and colossal specimen trees. Easy parking close to the hall is helpful when you've got smaller members of the group. The staff helped, without having to ask, with our bags through the lovely glass vestibule doors to the entrance hall. I was glad of the seat at the desk as I could take in the beautiful room whilst we were swiftly taken through check in. We found that we had been upgraded, without request and for no reason other than the staff going out of their way to take care of our family. You really do feel like you're "coming home" as the staff genuinely care and look for the details that optimise your stay. The children were utterly delighted at the oak staircase and fireplaces then onto the room as we adventured into this unique place. The large room was light and bright with three windows overlooking the grounds, well furnished with excellent linens and the staff had provided the range of Penhaligan's Quercus toiletries which was a much appreciated touch. We will associate our stay forevermore with the scent of Quercus, this gesture really was appreciated. The bathroom was equally well furnished with a comfortable bath and powerful separate shower. When we were dressed for dinner we ventured downstairs to a beautiful dining room. The staff warmly welcomed us and gave a service that is only possible with an emplarary team. Dinner was a delight, staff taking time to talk to our children and providing creative delicious dishes. We had a great sleep on comfortable beds. In the morning we were greeted by the grand fireplace with around an 18ft length of buffet breakfast table of everything you could possibly want including all of the Scottish hot variety, pastries, cereals, yogurts, baked goods, jams and honey all displayed with such attention to aesthetics. Staff graciously served us both at the buffet and at table. Freshly fuelled the three children were quite literally full of beans so we explored the gardens. There's lots to discover my three enjoyed climbing and running across the landscape, finding different leaves (we visited in autumn and so there was a variety of leaf shapes and colours to collect), they created their own chasing games across one of the large hidden lawns and then found a sunken garden. As a family we emerged refreshed from our break at Norwood Hall, we will hold very special memories here and wish to return. Norwood Hall is a rare gem.

I have stayed at Norwood 4 times but this time l was very disappointed.
We went for dinner which is usually very good but in this occasion l was disappointed. It started when l was asked if l’d like water, always before got tap water on this occasion waiter asked if l would like still or sparkling. It was my fault as l said still what he didn’t ask was if l wanted tap water! £5.50 later for bottled water crazy the water in Scotland is great out the tap. I watched others being asked the same thing but they were clever enough to say tap water.
The menu that evening did not have a lot of choice.
For the first time l would say it was average but the worst thing was the length of time we had to wait, others in the dining room were complaining too.
When l paid my bill l was charged £11 for 2 bottles of water and also a service charge which l’d never been charged on previous visits.
Breakfast in the morning was not the best, usually the food is freshly cooked but when the food arrived you could tell it had been pre cooked and was slightly warm.
When leaving the hotel l was not asked if l had a pleasant stay.
Sorry to say after some fantastic previous stays l won’t return now.

My wife and I returned on 25th August from a three night Dinner, Bed and Breakfast stay at the Norwood. Hotel rooms , grounds etc could not be faulted, the staff were exceptional in their care of detail, appearance and helpfulness from the moment you arrive at reception you are very well looked after, nothing is too difficult. However we were very disappointed in the dinner menu. I realise that due to circumstances it is only a restricted menu that can be provided but to have exactly the same menu three nights running is not acceptable when even the choice of soup was repeated, main course included what can only be described as a beef burger on a roll with chips the choice of main course consisting of beef burger, sirloin steak (at an extra charge of £7.00), fish and chips or chicken plus two vegetarian dishes. The food was well cooked, presented and served by pleasant waiters. The wine list was also very limited. The menu probably would be acceptable if you only stayed for one night but a change of menu is essential for those staying longer after all this is rated as 2 Rosette 4 Star Hotel

Stephane and his team provided a warm and professional atmosphere at Norwood Hall enabling our Spring Ball to be more akin to the experience of a house party in that we were made to feel at home and completely confident that our guests would be well looked after. On arrival you will drive through Norwood's well kept grounds with particularly impressive redwoods and rhododendrons of note. The Hall itself is sensitively updated with a glass door vestibule that enhances the beautiful historic detail as you enter for a warm welcome by the wood fire and take a seat by the desk to check in. Arrivals as they should be done! Further along in the adjacent hall landing with a grand oak staircase (perfect for group photographs) there are doors to a lovely well lit sitting room (perfect for an afternoon tea gathering), a cosy dining room, the ball room suite and further afield the bedrooms. The bedrooms are luxurious indeed and of decent size with most importantly a powerful shower and comfortable mattress. The outstanding views across the grounds were an added delight. The ballroom suite has two bars, access to and staff support with audiovisual technology and a dance floor. Stephane's staff were warm, attentive and diligent in producing beautiful table settings (pictured here) and by all reports from our members an absolute triumph of a dinner. So this review is to both thank everyone at Norwood and to inform anyone reading this review with a special event in mind: I recommend Norwood Hall unreservedly.

You will be on the edge of the city so I guess taxis would be around £15. The bus service is good out that way - the bus stop is about a ten minute walk - depending on the age of your children. There are not many eating places close at hand - there are places down at the bridge of Dee. Again a bus to the city centre is your best bet. There are fast food places at the beach promenade along with the amusement park - it would mean a change of bus in Union street to get there.
