The Parkgate Hotel garners praise for its luxurious amenities, including the acclaimed spa and The Sorting Room dining, and its prime location near Cardiff's attractions. While guests appreciate the stylish atmosphere and professional service, some feel the value is diminished by additional costs and noise disruptions. The rooms are generally celebrated for their comfort and cleanliness, though opinions on room size and quietness vary. Parking challenges and minor maintenance issues are occasional drawbacks noted by visitors.

I stayed at the Parkgate for a business trip due to it's central locality and upscale aesthetic and was not disappointed.

The room had luxury touches such as lights inside the wardrobe and small glass bottles of water waiting on the bedside table. The in-room tea and coffee was very good and Elemis shower minis was a nice additional touch. The bed was comfortable and of good size.

I did not eat at the Parkgate on this occasion but their cocktails were delicious, albeit on the more expensive side for Cardiff (£15 espresso martini). You are however paying for a more premium ambience.

The only downside was lack of onsite parking meaning I paid £32 at the closest carpark which is NCP Westgate. It would be great if the hotel could strike up a discounted parking option for a nearby facility. This is the only reason I have not awarded 5 stars.

Dear Sarah, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Parkgate Hotel! I’m delighted to hear that you enjoyed the luxury touches in your room, from the ambient lighting to the complimentary Elemis shower amenities. It’s great to know you found the bed comfortable and appreciated the quality of our in-room tea and coffee. I understand your comments regarding the pricing of our cocktails; we aim to provide a premium experience that reflects the quality of our offerings. Regarding parking, our central location unfortunately means we are unable to offer onsite parking facilities. We do not recommend the NCP Westgate Street car park due to security concerns and the overall standard of the facility. Unfortunately, we had to revoke any concessions with them because the situation has not improved, and we do not wish to be associated with them. Instead, we recommend Cardiff Central Train Station, which is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. They offer 24-hour parking for only £13.25, which is very competitive compared to other parking options in the city. Please note that the Parkgate Hotel does not operate or own any of these car parks and cannot accept liability for any loss or damage that may occur there or if promotional codes are entered incorrectly. We hope to welcome you back soon for a stay that earns a full 5 stars! Kindest regards, Ryan Guest Services

Yet another failure to spend an eagerly awaited stay in this highly recommended quality hotel in Cardiff to enable a hospital visit. You couldn’t make up the latest reason for failing to negotiate a simple public transport trip from Carmarthen to Cardiff, how difficult could it possibly be? Anyway, if it isn’t regular routine train strikes it is the discovery of a tragic fatality somewhere on the train line!! Enough of my woes, this is a review of the Parkgate Hotel in which we have yet to spend a night. But if the exceptional front desk help from the duty manager Alex is anything to go by then we are sure our eventual visit will have been worth it.. We’ll done Alex and thank you from Alison and Martyn.

_ shower flow fair & water warm to hot but not really hot,
Ask to use umbrella, all in use , the rack was extremely small for amount of rain in Cardiff !!
£40 each to use spa facilities- did not use as this price is extremely high. It’s not like a treatment with staff costs. In most hotels it’s free.

Dear valued guest, Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that the shower did not meet your expectations and that the availability of umbrellas was limited during your stay. We understand how important these details are, especially in Cardiff's rainy weather, and will look into expanding our umbrella provision to better serve our guests. Regarding the spa facilities, we strive to offer a luxurious and relaxing experience. While our pricing reflects the quality and exclusivity of our amenities, we understand that it might not suit everyone's preferences. We will certainly take your comments into consideration as we continually review and adjust our offerings. Thank you again for your feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back and provide an even better experience in the future. Kindest regards, Ryan Guest services

This Hotel is not 5 star.

We upgraded to a King Deluxe and were initially provided with an accessible room on the first floor. We changed this and requested a room with a view of the Stadium. We received a room with a side view but overlooking a scruffy back street. There was no refrigerator in the room and more importantly no slippers provided to wear to the spa.

The spa cost £30 / person in addition to the price of the room (for 90 minutes). Apparently even more on a weekend. This spa is small, not suitable for swimming & not a patch on the St David’s spa which is free of charge with the room, as you would expect. Even here we had to request slippers. There was also no shower gel, shampoo or conditioner in either of the 2 showers in the changing room. There was a sign offering samples of the Elemis products, but no samples provided and no body lotion.

Service in the bar was slow and one of the two staff seemed to require bar training. More staff needed.

Buffet breakfast was ok but the woman who appeared to be in charge similarly required more training, particularly in manners; as she came along swiping plates & half -full cups of coffee from in front of us without a word.

The young man she appeared to be training however was very well-mannered and asked before removing glasses from the table.

I would not rush back to this Hotel. Overall, disappointing…

We visited the Hotel for the second time after visiting last February 2023, but this time we booked an evening meal and use of the Spa, which we never did last time but.
The last time we booked we were advised to use the NCP car park in Westgate Street, a few minutes walk form the hotel, which we again did this time but on checking in we were told that this car park is no longer on their recommended list, but as we had pre-paid we left the car at the NCP. The checking went smoothly and it was confirmed what we had booked timings etc and we were told about and directed to all amenities. We made away to our room 206 and made ourselves comfortable, but found the room to be chilly, so we put the heating up to 23 degrees, so that when we return from the Spa it would be warm for as as it was a cold day/evening/night. We made our way to the Spa which is clearly signed and on arrival we were shown the changing rooms and explained the safety procedures and they familiarised us with the facility and gave us our gowns and slippers. We enjoyed the Spa, which we were lucky enough to have to ourselves. The views of Cardiff over the roof tops, from the Spa are impressive, and coupled with relaxing mood of the Spa made for an excellent ninety minute chilaxing time, in the infinitely pool, sauna, steam room and on the heated beds.
On returning to our room we again found it chilly so turned the heating up to 25 degrees and could feel the heat eventually, we relaxed a little took a shower and then got ready to go to the Sorting Room for our evening meal, after which we retired to the Sorting Room bar for a few drinks. When we retired to the room unfortunately we found the room even more chilly, which was off putting as the heating was on and set at 25 degrees way over the temperature that we would set at home, so we werent long before we retired to bed, but when we put the lights off we found the the light from the courtyard and the staircase there infiltrated our room and even trying to move the curtains didn't eliminate the light pollution and we found it difficult to get off to sleep and it did spoil our nights sleep, and would bring eye masks next time. The beds were very comfortable as were the pillows which made the light issue even more annoying because we are sure with the right light conditions we would have had a far better nights sleep.
Breakfast is served at very agreeable hours and as last year was very enjoyable with a good selection and variation to pick from, with plenty of tea and coffee which can set you up for the day, the staff were helpful and courteous at all times.
There is a fast check out available or you can visit the desk to check out which went smoothly, and they emailed on the receipt, which is when we found the charge for the tap water.

Dear valued guest, Thank you for sharing you valued feedback. Great that we got to welcome you back for a second time, you got to enjoy our wonderful thermal suite experience. Your right due to cars being broken into the NCP Westgate Streetcar Park, with no immediate improvements from them to change this. The Parkgate Hotel revoked any association, discounts, and partnerships with them. We have updated all our marketing pieces online and in house with our new recommendations. Your safety is very important to us. Our heating system is very new with the best technology. It will turn off when it hits the temperature. The instructions are next to the panel. We thrilled to learn how much you enjoyed your thermal suite experience. We are looking at investing in blinds in each room this year to improve the lighting issues with some rooms and I thank you for bringing this feedback to our attention. Please keep an eye out for further breakfast improvements on your next stay. Tap water is complimentary and wouldn't appear as a charge on any bill. You will see we have a hydration station in the lobby. Any bottles ordered on room service would be at a charge. I do hope these answers some of your concerns. We hope to warmly welcome you again to The Parkgate hotel in the future and if we can be of any assistance in the meantime, please do get in touch. Kindest regards, Ryan Guest services

After walking past The Parkgate Hotel on a recent visit to Cardiff and being impressed by its smart appearance, we cancelled an alternative hotel booking to stay here.

Housed in historic buildings the traditional exterior is echoed inside.
We stayed in room 507, which had a large bathroom with floor to ceiling windows. The room wasn’t the largest but more than adequate. The room decor was relatively new as were the common areas, hallways etc.

We were awoken throughout the night and in the early morning by the plumbing. If another room flushed the loo or used a shower the noise from it was loud enough to wake both of us up. This happened multiple times. I’m not sure whether it was an adjacent or room above, the noise came through the vent.

Breakfast was included in the rate, which I had booked directly through the hotel website.
The information that the “full Welsh breakfast” had to be taken in the restaurant and was not available in-room was not provided.
We only learned this whilst staying and making a request before bed.
You could only have breakfast delivered to your room if you paid for it again, despite already having paid for said breakfast. Obviously I expect to pay a tray charge for room service but this wasn’t an option.

It’s a shame as on paper it’s a very nice central hotel, I can’t comment on the food as I refuse to pay for something twice. If this information had been shared on booking I would have opted for room only.

However the disturbed night’s sleep caused by plumbing noise and lack of transparency regarding B&B rates means I would not stay here again unless these issues were resolved.

We came to Parkgate Hotel as a young couple to celebrate our 9th anniversary which the hotel were aware of. We got checked in and went up to our Deluxe King room to instead find a disabled room. This meant everything in the bathroom was lowered, there was a shower curtain rather than a luxury walk in glass/tiled enclosed shower and pull cords and metal support bars everywhere. My partner went down to speak to the lady on the Reception desk to ask to move rooms who said the room type we had was fully booked. She said the only thing we could do was upgrade but we'd have to pay. We then had to pay £20 for an upgrade. This upgrade had already been offered to me via an email link for £10 so I don't understand where they got this price from. I also don't believe the room type we had was fully booked as online you could still book the original room we had for that night (See screenshot) Not a great start to our special night away.

Once we finally checked in to our upgraded room we were really impressed. It was well decorated and spotlessly clean.

We made our way to the Sorting Room restaurant and WOW. We had a brilliant time. 0ur anniversary was recognised with free cocktails and a dessert. The service and food was incredible. The staff in the restaurant are an absolute credit to your hotel. They make the experience!

We booked the Sunday Rollover offer in March (I would recommend checking the offers page on the hotel website as there are some great deals).
It was a visit for my birthday with my husband and Dad, we originally booked a deluxe king room. After booking we were then offered an upgrade at a reduced rate to a deluxe junior suite which we happily agreed.
Check in isn’t until 4pm so we went to the hotel to leave our bags but my Dad’s room was ready so he was able to check in which was great. The Receptionist was very welcoming and friendly.
He booked a deluxe king room which was immaculately well presented and very clean. It was a really good size, as was the bathroom which had a lovely walk in shower and a selection of toiletries. The view wasn’t great but the hotel is in the city centre and having read most of the reviews (I like to research!) it was expected but did not detract from the quality of the room in our opinion.
We went into the centre for a few hours and when my myself and my husband checked in we were offered another upgrade at a reduced rate to The Parkgate Suite on the fourth floor, as it was my birthday we accepted this and were so happy we did! Thank you to the gentleman on Reception!
The Suite has two toilets, an expansive hallway and dressing table area, a separate living room at the front of the hotel with a city view, large bedroom and one of the largest bathrooms I have seen with a lovely selection of toiletries.
We booked at the bar for drinks and had a booth, the bar area is in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Decor is impressive but comfortable and the service especially from Chloe was outstanding, I didn’t want to leave but we had reservations in the restaurant!
Since our last visit to the restaurant, there are more tables which have been added some of which are quite close together but we were shown to a nicely appointed table and provided menus.
The wine was excellent, we ordered the Zinfandel and the Pinot Gris. Kim who looked after us was fantastic, really attentive, friendly and helpful. The food for the most part was very good. Highly recommend the prawns and scotch egg for starters and I very much enjoyed the cheese board.
My husband and I ordered steak which both of us found disappointing but we didn’t want to complain as we were having such a great evening and experience.
Ioan and Kim were very empathetic and resolved the situation professionally and diplomatically, they are both a real credit to the restaurant.
I also received a birthday cocktail and mini dessert which was delicious and appreciated.
Breakfast in the morning was excellent, great choice of food. My only minor complaint was the self service coffee which I think could be better quality and served to the table.
I had the best birthday and I wholeheartedly recommend the hotel, bar and restaurant. I’m very much looking forward to our return visit.

A bit of a mixed experience. Hotel itself was lovely, room was nice and bathroom was lovely too with a nice walk in shower.
However, it’s not super clear that the spa is not included so we had to pay an extra £40pp to use for 90mins. This was a discounted rate. I wouldn’t say it was particularly worth the £40, but we enjoyed it anyway!!
This should be clearer and the hotel advised us they are working on this.
HOWEVER the biggest let down was the fact we have both been bitten all over following sleeping in the hotels bed. After the first night my husband mentioned he had a few bites, but he didn’t make a big deal about it to me. So I didn’t really consider it being the bed. Therefore I didn’t request a room change. The following day I woke up and am covered in bed bites. We raised this at check out and were given apologises and reassured by the deputy manager it would be looked into and my email was taken and phone number. I was advised as it was pre paid through Expedia I could not be refunded the cost of the room.
The hotel then asked for feedback, I raised the above points and their response only acknowledged the additional cost of the spa. Advising more staff training would be carried out to make it more clear that it’s not included. However no mention of the bites. I’ve also had no further follow up on the matter.
It’s a shame as we would have returned again if we had not been bitten. But we are now both covered in bites. We’ve taken photos of them, it’s just really made us feel uncomfortable about the standard of the room cleanliness. Feel not heard or taken seriously about the matter either.

Dear Ms Owen, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed aspects of your stay, such as the lovely room, bathroom, and the overall ambiance of the hotel. However, I want to sincerely apologise for the concerns you’ve raised, particularly regarding your experience with bites after your stay. Please rest assured that we take such matters very seriously. As part of our protocol, our fully trained management team, including our General Manager and Health and Safety Officer, conducted a thorough and immediate inspection of the room. This inspection included a detailed examination of the linens, pillows, mattress, furniture, and carpet. I can confirm that we found no evidence of bed bugs—no physical bugs, blood spots, black spots, shed skin, or eggs were discovered. Additionally, our mattresses are equipped with BugShield protection to further ensure our guests' comfort and safety. We deeply regret that this issue affected your stay, and we apologise for any discomfort you experienced. The well-being of our guests is our top priority, and we want to assure you that we continue to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in all our rooms. Regarding your feedback on the spa, I appreciate your comments. We understand that it may not have been clear that spa access is not included in the room rate, and we are actively working on improving this communication to avoid any future confusion. Our spa facilities are designed to offer a premium experience, and we strive to provide a competitive rate in comparison to other four-star hotels in the area. I am truly sorry that you felt unheard in our initial response. Your concerns are important to us, and I regret that we did not address them more thoroughly in our follow-up. We value your feedback as it helps us improve our services, and I hope you might consider giving us another chance in the future. Please feel free to reach out directly if there’s anything else we can do to address your concerns. Kindest regards, Ryan Parry-Jones Front of House Manager

Very mixed stay at The Parkgate,
We went for my Husbands Birthday, we booked the Thermal suite in the Spa, And a 1 night stay in the hotel with breakfast in the morning.

The hotel is beautifully decorated and the room was stunning and luxurious,
Unfortunately we were given a room on the side that the deliveries and laundry collection comes in and there was a lot of noise through the night, starting in the early hours, with the linen cages being loaded and unloaded and shouting from the guys doing so. I didn’t get a single wink of sleep and was kept awake all night, I am a light sleeper but even with ear plugs it kept me awake. My husband can sleep through anything and was still disturbed during the night. The bed was very comfortable on the other hand, but I was highly disappointed with noise and lack of sleep, which completely ruined the stay, it felt like a lot of money to be spent for a terrible night sleep in a beautiful room. It was also very warm in the room even with turning the AC on not not sure if it wasn’t working correctly or whether it’s because you can only set it as low as 16 degrees.

The thermal suite spa experience was absolutely phenomenal, no complaints there at all. The Lady who checked us in was lovely, very friendly and helpful. beautiful facilities and we bot thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a very relaxing atmosphere, quiet and peaceful, not bothered at all by other guests and as it’s up to a max of 8 people it wasn’t at all crowded and we managed to move between the steam room and sauna and the pool by ourselves.

Breakfast in The Sorting room was beautifully presented. With staff constantly tending to it so nothing ran out and everything was kept covered and fresh. The food was delicious and such good quality and variety.

We would definitely return for the Spa and breakfast but unfortunately I’m not so sure we would stay again, hence not a 5 star review. The Spa and Food definitely deserved 5 though.
