Room are tidy clean and just what one needs for a stay towels are white ones you in most hotels two big bath and to hand towels provided coffee and tea making in room the rooms can be bit warm side for some however there was a fan and window opens enough to keep some air flowing the show is fixed over head be careful as the shower tray can be slippery I put one hand towels on the tray to stop myself slipping also one can flood the bathroom if showers curtains isn't inside the tray.
There bar that has happy our and a range of evening meals if don't fancy going out to eat the breakfast are nice but bit pricey compared to a wetthespoons which two are not far from the hotel. If not big breakfast eater there a very good Greggs or Tim Hortons opposite the hotels
We were disappointed to find that a "twin room" is comprised of a small double, plus a tiny single camp bed with one pillow and a dirty mirror for a headboard. I'm sure I selected the option for two single beds on the website and the booking email confirms it was a twin, but reception advised that all twin rooms are set up with camp beds.
The very small room plus the camp bed set up meant the desk was rendered useless and we could only make tea and coffee while actually sat on the camp bed, which would be far from ideal for anyone, and was especially difficult for someone with limited mobility.
The room wasn't very clean and we ended up getting some polish and a cloth from reception to clean the mirror and bathroom surface, which were covered in hair and sticky fingerprints.
We went to the surprisingly quiet bar at around 5:30pm for some food and a beer. Unfortunately, one of the three lagers had already run out and the food (one pizza, nachos, falafels and two chips) took almost an hour to arrive.
The food was OK for the money, apart from the falafels which were unlike anything I've ever eaten and definitely wouldn't recommend.
There was also some comedy 'sparkling' water which was completely flat; the staff were very apologetic and replaced the bottle twice, but they were all the same. Not sure if this was due to a storage issue or possibly a dodgy batch from the supplier, though.
The hotel was fully booked so we couldn't ask to change room. Thankfully we only stayed for one night so made do, but for £275.99 it really wasn't up to scratch. If Travelodge insist on hiking prices by over 200% when there's an event at the stadium, I feel the very least they should do is ensure the rooms are clean and they order enough lager to last the night!
I booked in on the 23/12/2024 for 5 nights over the Xmas period.
I now live in Birmingham and left Cardiff when I was a lad but I'll always be a Cardiff boy.
Last year my 2 sisters took me back home to Cardiff after nigh on 60 years away and I immediately fell in love in love with the place...... again.
I arrived early for my check in and after pulling my suitcase through the packed streets of Cardiff city centre I went back to the hotel and gladly paid the early booking fee of £15.
The female receptionist was lovely and allocated myself a quiet room (315).....or so I was told. Room 315 rang a bell and it was when I entered the room I realised that on a previous occasion I had stayed in this same room. It was so hot you could boil an egg but as I was wearing a heavy sheepskin coat I thought it might be what I was wearing.
Anyway I dumped my suitcase and went back into the city centre to enjoy the German market etc and returned a few hours later to the hotel.
I went to my room and the heating was stifling so I opened the windows to let some air into the room and the loud buzzing noise hit me. It was akin to an engine or fan working but loudly and it was coming from the kitchen areas etc.
There was a large fan in the room (suprise suprise) but when I turned it on it made a buzzing noise. I had a choice of listening to the outside noise or sweltering in the room.
I went downstairs to reception and asked very politely if it was possible for me to have a room change.........I've stayed at the hotel previously and have stayed on the same side as the music venue across the road (The Live Lounge) and to be honest with the secondary window that has been installed neither the sound of the music or people enjoying themselves bothered me......it was very muffled and you could hardly hear anything.
The male receptionist didn't even bother to check the computer screen and told me "housekeeping isn't available tomorrow,we can't do anything". I don't know what housekeeping had to do with anything but he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away.
I then spoke with my sister on the phone who then told me about the last time I had stayed in room 315,not only was it very hot but pigeons would enter the room from the open window and leave feathers and 'deposits' around the room.
I asked the male receptionist to allow myself to transfer to another room in which he replied "housekeeping isn't available" to which I replied that I would have to cancel my stay at the hotel to which he replied"whatever " and walked away.
I immediately removed my suitcase from the room and returned to Birmingham by train.
I have since been offered a 'goodwill gesture' payment of £68.98 by Travelodge customer services but have declined their offer and have asked for a full refund of my booking fee.
I have now decided to take Travelodge to the small claims court. In future my advice to Travelodge management is to train your male staff in customer service.
The night staff were very helpful throughout and almost seemed apologetic because of the state of the place the music and some of the guests. They helped me to swap rooms as the one allocated had a broken door lock and they were happy to supply plates and cutlery for two of us who arrived very late and had only a take-away for supper.
So not a great experience and no sleep for my one night here - I will not be staying here again, nor recommending to friends and colleagues.
We chose Travelodge Queen Street , not just because of its price but mainly because of its location, seeing as our main goal was to Visit Cardiff Castle.
From the outset the Experience with the Hotel Staff was good. I phoned ahead to advise that our Flight would only allow us to book in after 12am and this wasn't an issue at all.
On Arrival, Check-in was a breeze and the fan in the room was very welcome, no more so that the following day ( Saturday 31st) as it was a scorcher.
Breakfast was much better than expected as all the essentials were there ( we were a little naughty and grabbed some extra scrambled egg and Toast) . Additional surprise was that we were asked if everything was okay with the breakfast. A Nice touch .
We had a meal and drinks in the bar both evenings and it had a certain quiet ambiance that was very settling , especially with the night club next door) so good noise insulation. :-)
For me the only thing lacking was a fridge in the room - that's just as I wake up thirsty most nights and like to have a nice cold glass of water.
On a basic level, the hotel stay is a room for the night with a comfy bed, Shower & Wash facilities & a little bit of TV if you want it (you have to pay a nominal fee for Wi-Fi) . The meals and the bar facilities are Great Extras but if you are looking for Swanky - go to a Swanky Hotel.
It you want a place to sleep, in a Great location, with lovely Staff and bar and food facilities to get you going for the day or help you chill for the night - Stay in Travelodge ( Well Queen Street anyway!)
Finally, as per the title I'm going back with my Girlfriend for the Christmas market so if that's not a vote of confidence then.......
