The Angel Hotel offers a prime location near Cardiff Castle and local amenities, a detail frequently celebrated by guests. However, opinions on the hotel are mixed, with travelers commending the spacious rooms and cleanliness but criticizing the outdated decor and facilities. While the welcoming atmosphere and large rooms are a plus, the value proposition is diminished by additional costs and unmet expectations.
Service quality varies, with reports of both friendly assistance and disappointing encounters. Noise levels can also be problematic for some visitors.

Staff are so welcoming and friendly. Hotel has a very relaxing yet grand feel about it. The decor is a little tired but I knew that as we've stayed before. And the mattress definitely had seen better days as it sunk in the middle. The car park was closed (which we found out after arrival) but a quick phonecall to reception and they suggested nearby parking with a great discount code. Even though the hotel is on a busy road, the secondary glazing meant the noise levels didn't disturb us. And a very good fan in the room did a great job of keeping us cool as the weather meant unusual hot temperatures. Shower pressure was excellent and room was clean. This was the first time we'd had breakfast as part of our stay. On the first morning the breakfast was good and service was excellent. Felt very relaxed. However on the 2nd morning the cooked breakfast was inedible. There were no meat sausages and the hash browns were just batter and no filling. It was the morning after a big gig at the stadium so it may be that the kitchen couldn't cope with a full hotel but nevertheless I was really disappointed as I felt it let the hotel down. All in all, a great central location with superb staff. If you want to stay somewhere that is not a generic chain hotel, yet still affordable, this place is ideal.

We stayed at the Angel hotel for our honeymoon in Oct 2022. Upon arrival we got put in the most dark and miserable room possible on the third floor, it had the tiniest of windows and felt a bit like a prison cell, however we asked to be moved and were put in a much better room with large windows overlooking the castle and were much happier.
The problem with the Angel is it’s just old and there’s not much that the current owners can do about that. There’s only so much paint can do so you have to take it for what it is, it’s a building with a rich history which is a bit run down but the staff are nice and most importantly it’s clean.
Whilst we stayed there it was being used to house Ukrainian refugees and the children can be quite noisy running around the corridors playing until around 9-10pm which wasn’t a problem for us but worth baring in mind if you do go to sleep early.
We didn’t eat in the restaurant for dinner as found the prices to be quite high and there are plenty of other restaurants in walking distance but we did have a breakfast one morning which wasn’t bad.
If you’re looking for luxury then this definitely isn’t the place for you and I feel like the photos are a bit misleading when they show the grandeur of the lobby because the rooms are nothing special at all but if you’re looking for an average, affordable, clean place with a good location to base yourself while you’re out exploring Cardiff it’s worth a try.

Booked as a quick city break with hubby. He was initially a bit dubious as had driven past a number of times and said it looked run down. We arrived a few hours before booking time and fell in love with the grandeur of the chandelier and grand stairs, we were met by a cheerful lady at reception who was happy to let us leave our case. We went back at check-in, hubby dealt with the check and said the gent dealing with him was lovely, asked if we'd like a castle view, obviously he said yes. We were on the third (top floor) room 304. Upon opening the room door we were pleasantly surprised by the room. It was MUCH bigger than we anticipated, even had a sofa!! Room was spotlessy clean, comfortable and so so warm (it was in a heatwave so understandabe) no air con even though it had the vents but thankfully a huge powerful fan... Very comfortable bed. Part of the room were a little dated and worn but not an issue.
Staff were all very polite and chatty, nothing was too much trouble.
Location was spot on for us, minutes walk to the shops and bars, opposite Cardiff castle and Bute Park and the river Taff which runs water taxis to the bay, £15 pp one way. It's a 30 minute stroll back to the hotel.
One piece of advice is, there are no sockets next to the bed (lamps leads are odd, they don't have plugs, lead goes straight into some sort of socket) so might be a good idea to pop an extention lead on your case.
Breakfast Thursday was table service, Friday was buffet. Hubby struggled, sausages good quality but herby which he doesn't like, bacon over cooked both days. Buffet had bacon , sausage, hash browns, big field mushrooms, black pudding, backed beans, grilled tomatoes, and fried eggs. There were also beautiful croissants, pan au chocolate, jams, cereal, fruits, cheese and meat and the obligatory toasting machine. Tea and coffee was served in pots ordered upon arrived at your table, fruit juice and apple juice was help yourself.

We decided to try a different hotel this year paid £236 for 1 night waste of money rather paid a little more for a decent hotel. We check in on the Saturday evening after driving up from Cornwall as my hubby was doing the Cardiff half. Wanted to late check was told we couldn't as cheuck out would be 2pm instead of 11am. Went to the room sigle pain glass so you could hear everything outside the room was really hot they left a normal fan in the room but that would of blown the hot air around. Bed was soft so when you turn over you would of fell out of bed. Open bed covers and moved a pillow just before going to bed and found dead flies in the bed that was really gross ended up with the covers on the floor as the room was so hot didn't sleep well due to noise outside. Hubby went off to do half marathon 11am I was ask to leave room I explained that I was told we could stay until 2pm as my hubby was doing the marathon but the staff were just rude so I packed up left the room hubby got back and had to change in the disabled toilets good job I had wet wipes on me. Not ever going to this place again will keep to the hotel we normally go to. Breakfast omg it was rubbish not a lot to choose from they had a big bowl of yogurt but nothing for you to put it in so I used a juice glass. Everything was empty they didn't seem to rush them out to fill anything up.

The Angel hotel is well situated. Close to the Castle, shopping, The Principality stadium and plenty of restaurants all within walking distance. Overall the hotel is clean and tidy. There are steps leading up to the main front door and reception area, not suitable for those with walking difficulties. The doorman watched us struggle half way up before offering to help. Only 1, very small, lift in operation to access all floors inside the building. Reception staff were average, housekeeping lady and maintenance man were very helpful and friendly. Room was spacious but cold. There was one small plug in electric heater to keep the chill off. There is a distinct lack of plug sockets in the room. I booked a deluxe twin but what we were given was absolutely not this standard. The décor is dated, old and worn and needs refurbishing. Breakfast was good and perfectly adequate with a reasonable choice. The staff at breakfast were either idle and stood around chatting in pairs for everyone in the restaurant to hear or had disappeared and not available to check guests in causing a queue. When I booked, the hotel advertised parking however when I arrived some 10 months later the parking was no longer available but this was not, at anytime, communicated to me. Instead the Hotel advise to park at the nearest NCP, more than 100 yards away, at a cost of £32.95 per night! If you want to stay at this hotel make sure you research parking alternatives as the Hilton across the road offered public parking at £15 per night. The cost of this hotel was on a par with others in the area that offer much nicer facilities and better service. My advice, do your research and find an alternative hotel!

I regularly run races in Cardiff and the surrounding area, so like to stay in a hotel enjoy a night out, do some shopping and catch up with my cousin when I do. As I travel solo I tend to look for cheaper deals for the dates I'm staying, because of this I have stayed in many hotels in cardiff. I hadn't stayed at the Angel before, but I will look forward to another stay. The location is convenient if planning a city centre stay, close to all the shops, restaurants and pubs, plus there is plenty of choice within walking distance on the too good to go app! I checked in after running Barry Island 10k. Check in was quick with a polite young lady. I stayed in room 218 on the second floor, overlooking the castle so on the main road. With the windows shut I couldn't hear any traffic noise, and I'm not used to traffic as I live in a rural town off the road. There are however ear plugs available if you want them. My room was spotlessly clean and tidy (as was the rest of the hotel) with nice decor. The bedding and towels were pristine with extra towels in the wardrobe. It was a hot day and the temperature controls acted quickly in the room to get to a temperature I liked. After a very hot race I needed a shower. I could have stayed in there hours! The power shower eased my aching shoulders, easily controlled temperature, and the same with the bath when I got back later that night. The room was large with a table and 2 chairs so I enjoyed a dinner purchased from the top good to go app for £3 from a restaurant 5 minutes walk away at the table. Then I chilled for a couple of hours before going to meet my cousin watching films from the bed on the large tv. The bed and pillows were so comfy I didn't want to go out! The supplies in the room were basic 4 each of tea bags, coffee, sugar and milk and a 3 pack of biscuits; soap, body wash and shampoo/conditioner combined. I ran out of tea before I went out but was supplied with extra from reception, and 4 of everything is pretty standard in hotels. When I returned I had a bath as it was a hot evening, got into bed and slept well until the morning only waking to my alarm at 10. I left my case securely behind the desk when I checked out (another speedy and polite process) and went shopping. The only (very minor) negatives are that there were only 2 plug sockets in the room by the desk and I tend to have my phone on charge overnight watching Netflix but there are no sockets next to the bed. If there had been 2 of us staying after a race we'd have needed to charge 2 watches and 2 phones plus use my straighteners etc. The other minor negative was the hairdryer. It was permanently fixed with a curly cord. To sit in front of the mirror and blow dry my hair, I had to really pull the stiff cord to get it far enough to dry the left side of my head, which took a fair amount of strength, so had to dry my hair in 3 goes due to my arm aching!

Please don't stay here, we finished the Cardiff half marathon and was cold got to our room, heating wasn't on so there was an oil heater tried putting that on didn't work my husband wanted to dry his top tried putting the fan on the face/casing fell off the worse of all was a nail sticking out of the ground which my husband ripped his running top on. Made a complaint the day after give us a free drink and a late check out because we asked was also advise is make a complaint via booking .com as be booked through them replaced the heater and put a rubber on the nail and give us a late check out absolutely useless the cleaner didn't speak a work of English (not her fault) as we wanted her 2 take our room service tray. Rooms out dated dust everywhere This WAS a high end place to stay not anymore very disappointed

Wow! Just WOW! from the moment we stepped in to this hotel it really was first class service through out. It was my wives birthday the day before and a short honeymoon night away as we had to cancel ours due to medical reasons. Sarah on reception was absolutely amazing and I hope that whoever pays her realises that have a true superstar working for them. Not only did she upgrade us to a suite from a deluxe room, she arranged for us to have a free drink at the bar while we waited just 20 mins for our room to be ready (we arrived early so we expected a bit of wait), to even arranging for happy birthday to be played at our evening meal. She's an absolute gem of a lady. The suite was spacious with even a pedestal fan all ready on when we went to room to keep it cool. We had a meal in the restaurant in the evening with me have lamb and the wife having steak which was absolutely delicious, compliments to the chef! Desert was devoured very quickly too, yum. Bed was very comfy, room was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty with a large choice including cooked and continental options. Our special night away was just perfect and that was not just down to the gorgeous hotel but to the amazing staff who definitely went above and beyond. Would we go back, MOST DEFINITELY! and will be in the future. Thank you all for making our night away so special and for some wonderful memories made

We booked a 2 day break using Wowcher deals, on arrival we collected our keys and went straight to our room, the hotel had a very impressive entrance and there are lifts to all floors as well as stairs. Our room was very clean, a great size, bed was very comfortable, good linen on beds too. The bathroom was very clean and modern offering a bath and shower option, and free toiletries and nice clean towels. Our deal included a 3 course evening meal and full breakfasts on both days, We had the loveliest restaurant staff to serve us, the choices were great and the food was well cooked and tasty, the meal also included wine, a choice of red, rose or white and a bottle of water, we tried rose and white and both, were excellent quality, all delivered in an iced bucket to stand at the table. Our table view was overlooking Cardiff castle which was so impressive. Breakfast were a buffet style offering cooked, cereal and croissants etc, again all excellent. The meal times are staggered to avoid overcrowding, you were not rushed and the atmosphere was really pleasant. location was perfect as we were next to the castle, you can visit this for free, and the Museum was 7 mins away on foot, we had a great visit to both. Bute park is also opposite, as is the Principality stadium. Shops were endless and a great selection on offer to please every purse. all in all we loved our stay and thank the staff for all your care and hard work. We will definitely visit again and would recommend highly.

Visited for a couple of nights for work. If you are attending an event at the Principality stadium or just visiting the city centre, then this hotel is absolutely prime for location. 2 minute walk to the stadium and the same until you reach the cities pubs and restaurants. Hotel is very old but has been maintained to a decent standard. Rooms are fairly basic but have everything you need including decent shower, comfortable bed and tea/coffee making facilities. Staff seemed friendly too. Car parking is limited and 15 pound per day
