The Coal Exchange Hotel is a historic, luxury hotel situated 450 yards from Cardiff Bay. The Grade II* listed heritage building stands tall today as an integral piece of Cardiff’s history. Renowned for helping to shape the city into the cosmopolitan Welsh capital, the building is treasured by locals and a must-see for those visiting the city. While its walls were once filled with the ambition and passion from local trade negotiators, its role as a shipping industry hub was left in the past, and the building was left to deteriorate. Bringing a breath of fresh air to Cardiff Bay and assigning the building a lasting role in the city, the Coal Exchange was born, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. Rooms at the Coal Exchange are stylish and contemporary with a touch of elegance and tradition. Our spacious rooms feature everything from large flat-screen TVs to whirlpool baths and free WiFi.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to VisitWales.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.

The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff garners appreciation for its historic charm and unique, spacious rooms, notably featuring jacuzzi baths. While guests enjoy the hotel's prime location near Cardiff Bay and Mermaid Quay, some reviewers point out cleanliness and maintenance concerns, alongside dated decor.
The hotel's event spaces earn positive remarks, but concerns about slow Wi-Fi and noise issues have been raised. Although the friendly staff is often commended, opinions on value suggest that the experience might not justify the price, given the service and cleanliness drawbacks.

Stayed at the Coal Exchange overnight for an event. A very impressive building with beautiful architecture, inside is a warren of corridors and I was often lost, every room has a name associated with Cardiff’s trading past so that makes interesting reading. My room was large, quirky, a bit dated and with tired decor but it was clean, the bedding and towels were super white, the bed was super comfortable and I had a huge jacuzzi bath! My room was at the rear of the hotel so no view but, considering we were in the middle of a busy city, I didn’t hear a sound all night. Breakfast buffet was standard, plenty of food, apparently in a temporary set-up but all adequate.

I will start out by saying that our two-night stay here was perfectly fine, except for a couple of drawbacks that I hope will be remedied as renovations continue. I want to love this hotel and I think someday when I return, I will. As tourists from abroad, my wife and I like to seek out lodging that provides comfort, but also provides an interesting historical or cultural experience. The Coal Exchange definitely hits the mark on the latter. What a very cool, old building that played a significant part in Wale's rise as a major coal exporter. We applaud the current owners in their quest to save this historic landmark and turn it into a functional hotel (and as I understand it, private flats). The building was never intended to be a hotel, so renovating this massive maze of rooms and corridors into a hotel has got to be an incredibly expensive and difficult endeavor. It sort of reminded me of The Majestic in Harrogate 15 years ago when that historic spa hotel was suffering from neglect and damage from a fire. It exudes luxury of a bygone era that just needs to be brought into the modern era.
Pros: I would say the biggest pro is the staff. They were all fantastic and responsive to any needs. We asks for extra pillows (using Whatsapp as there are not landline phones in the room). It was literally 2 minutes and we had a knock at the door by staff who brought two more pillows). The bed in our room was plenty comfortable. The breakfast was buffet-style full English breakfast with the ability to custom order eggs from the kitchen (buffet had scrambled eggs). The room itself was also comfortable enough, but we were also here when temps outside were pleasant and open windows provided plenty of fresh air and light (and unfortunately annoying laughing gulls making a racket, but we're two blocks from the bay so...). Finally, the building is just a cool old historic relic that I very much enjoyed wandering through.
Cons: My biggest complaint is probably one that hopefully can be easily remedied with some tech upgrades. The wi-fi was incredibly slow and spotty in our room. In this day and age, hotel customers expect decent internet connections, especially in a hotel in the middle of a capital city. Hot water always eventually came to our shower, but sometimes it took several minutes. The front desk promptly had maintenance check for any issues, but did inform us that it could just take a while to warm up. The shower head in a middle of a giant jacuzzi tub with no shower door or curtain was...odd. I recognize that the tubs are a huge plus for many customers. We are not those customers. We both prefer a nice shower instead. Finally, the maze of hallways, while not a problem for us (we kind of turned it into a game, counting the number of fire doors between the lift and our room), would not be conducive to guests with mobility issues. It's possible that there are accessible rooms on the ground floor.
All in all, I would come back and give this hotel another try. It has incredible potential to someday be a 5-star luxury hotel with a cool history.

I’m so glad we decided to stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff. I’d been given the very important job of finding a place to stay overnight for my friend’s special birthday. I didn’t really know where to start, so I compared prices of hotels in the area. I was surprised to find that the ‘budget’ hotels Premier Inn and Travelodge were no cheaper than The Coal Exchange for the given dates! I had a look at the photos and reviews and it looked perfect for a special occasion. It was steeped in history with the interior design staying true to the period in which it was built. Originally, as there were five of us, I had booked the sextuplet room. It looked amazing and we were all really excited about staying there. Unfortunately though, due to maintenance work being carried out on that part of the building, we had to change our plans. I was so disappointed to be letting my friends down, but David, the Front of House Manager, came to the rescue! He apologised for the turn of events and offered an alternative solution. He suggested three double rooms, and was very accommodating finding three right next to each other. He also very kindly arranged for Prosecco and Diet Coke (for our tea-totaler) to greet us in our rooms on arrival! The rooms were beautiful. Floor to ceiling double windows, opulent wallpaper, ornate period furniture and really comfortable beds with luxurious ceiling-high velvet headboards. The bathrooms were amazing! Big whirlpool baths, rainforest showers and gorgeous stone basins set on marble-topped washstands. The next morning (this morning) we enjoyed a wonderful cooked breakfast in Culley’s Kitchen and Bar, situated inside The Coal Exchange. There was a delicious variety of food including croissants, crumpets, muffins, cereals and of course the cooked breakfasts. My friend’s birthday was a success and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I’d like to thank all the staff who were so friendly and helpful. We can’t wait to come back for another visit x

First room had filthy windows. On asking to change rooms Emilie on reception came back to our room to confirm as she wondered if windows were frosted. Emilie agree windows were filthy and moved us to another room but stated that this was the only other room apart from accessible rooms as hotel was full. We accepted the room as it was brighter and the windows were cleaner and you could see out. As it was raining outside we went online to check out food and wine menu for the Culley’s restaurant in the hotel. There were some very good reviews. The prices online for food matched the menu downstairs but the wine list for a bottle of wine we had chosen was £30 rather than £25.50 online. When we asked why, we were told the online prices were out of date which the manager already knew about and we had to pay the higher price. No apology given. The pillows in the room were stained however the towels were lovely. The bedroom had a button backed blue PVC padded wall behind the beds which was full of dust. The breakfast was mixed, the fruit salad was delicious but the full English was poor, grit in the mushrooms, horrible sausages although scrambled egg was good. The brown sauce from the HP bottle was runny which is very unlike the HP we use at home. There were lots of things scattered on the floor behind the black boards by the bar. We were really looking forward to staying at the Coal Exchange. The history of the hotel was fascinating. Emilie on reception and Ella in the restaurant were very attentive and made our stay bearable but not to be repeated.

Good evening, Jeremy, Thank you for taking your time to leave us a review. Firstly I am glad to hear that Emily and Ella were attentive and made your stay bearable. I am sorry to hear that you encountered dirty windows in your first room. As I am sure you can agree this is a very large building and not all windows are easy to access due to part of the building being in derelict state and awaiting approval for the plans to get this back to its grand state. This is not an easy process due to us being Grade II listed and having to go through a few channels. We cannot allow any window cleaners to go round that side of the building due to us having a duty of care for every person that comes through our doors. In regards to any discrepancies in regards to Culleys menus on site and online this is due to Culleys being in it's final month of trading before the transition Aura that is currently being built in the old Culleys location. This has been made aware to management but they are in the process of changing everything over for the opening of our new restaurant. After speaking with the staff I do believe that they did apologise about this and you did also agree to pay the price. I do apologise about the oversights on the housekeeping side this will be passed on to make sure they are more thorough in their checks. Again apologies that the breakfast was not to your standard I understand that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In regards to the black boards in the grand hall this is a staff area where all the background work goes on. There will be boxes scattered occasionally due to deliveries and our waiters working tirelessly to make sure that the breakfast buffet is fully replenished so there is plenty for everyone. I understand this is not a site you want to see this is why the black boards are there to restrict your view. If you chose to look round that is your decision. I am disappointed to hear you wont return to this hotel but wish you the best in your search for the hotel that best matches your preferences. Kind regards

Enjoyed our stay here last night. Our room was lovely, fairly spacious, sadly didn't get chance to use the amazing spa bath. Curtains blacked the room out well for a good night sleep. The restaurant (now called Aura) had recently been taken over and had a relaxed vibe/atmosphere. Breakfast was included in our stay, self serve buffet, nice enough. The only issue we had was our drinks at breakfast, our party ordered a tea and a coffee, 2 coffees were brought (not a big deal as they were included in the breakfast) and I don't drink tea or coffee so ordered a diet coke with no ice which we had to ask for twice and it arrived in a half filled glass with way more ice than coke and when I checked out found I had to pay £3 or the privilege! Would stay here again though, loved the character of the place and how the rooms were named after people, with a small piece written about them on the ceiling. Location was excellent, right by the millennium centre and short walk to all of the bars and restaurants. We were also lucky to get a parking space at the front of the building

A grand building with an amazing history. I'm sure large amounts have been spent to make this historic centre of Victorian commerce into a comfortable and fascinating hotel. Only five minutes from the waterfront with more history, culture and night life than anyone could need . A warm welcome and a warm room but not sure about a winter night. The rooms are spacious with a comfortable bed and an armchair, a second chair would be nice. The bathroom has a jacuzzi and rain shower with ample hot water, a chair or clothes hanger would ease dressing and the addition of a waste bin. Our room was a triple despite being only two of us. This extra bed made packing and laying out clothes easier as there is no place for a suitcase apart from the floor. The crowning glory of this hotel is the restaurant. The chief catered for our group of twenty with beautiful meals that showed skill, care and thought, delightful potatoe croquettes. Wonderful catering and service. The central historic coal exhange floor / ballroom is jaw dropping. A magnificent space with embelishments and decor that warrant a few hours study. To seat approximately 300 guests for and evening convention of the British Office Space Council (yes, really, it does exist) was a Herculean task and have it cleared by the morning without any disruption to guests was a D Day task. Thoroughly recommend this hotel for location, space, catering and front of house staff.

A short walk from Cardiff Bay railway station and a pleasant 20 minute walk into town. Lots of restaurants around the bay. Cullen’s was closed for a refit, breakfast was buffet style in the beautiful grand hall. The usual hot and cold foods, pastries etc. The bedroom was light , comfortable bed. There was a fan in the room which we used, small electric/oil radiator in the room though doubt it would heat the room which has high ceilings.we had a window open and no noise from the street at night. The jucuzzi bath took ages to get hot water running, the shower head comes out of the ceiling and had mould on it. I appreciate its high up and would be difficult to clean but wasn’t nice. There wasn’t a lot of pressure and took a while to get hot, so didn’t wash my hair, no shower cap provided but nice miniature toiletries. Tea , coffee etc replenished and bottled water. Staff were pleasant . I would stay again.

We visited many years ago, when renovations were in their early stages and absolutely loved it. Everything from the food to the staff and decor was brilliant.
We visited again recently and whilst the building has advanced in terms of its renovation, it wasn't as good as it was all those years ago. It's not bad by any means but it definitely didn't meet expectations.
First impressions of our King room were great but we quickly started to notice it was in need of updating. It had a patch in the ceiling that needed sanding and repainting, the furniture was blemished with cup marks, the bathroom floor was an awful, lumpy brown vinyl, the jacuzzi bath was great but soon realised that whilst it looked clean, as soon as we entered it felt scummy to the touch. The bath panel was flaking, bubbled and generally badly water damaged.
The bed was a zip and link King/super king and whilst the sheets were clean, the mattress protector was stained as were the actual pillows.
The room was also warm and stuffy. It looks like they have controls for Air con but no actual working system, instead theyd placed a fan in the room that did little to reduce the warmth in the room. We struggled to sleep properly on a colder rainy day so I can't imagine what it would be like on a warmer summers day.
The food is now provided by Culleys of which I believe is a privately run restaurant in the hotel and whilst the food was OK by pub standards it was rather disappointing, again, compared to our experience a few years back when food was served in the main hall area, presumably with a different restauranteur. The menu felt like more of a pub lunch menu and I felt it lacked any flair to make your evening meal special. That being said the food was still good as was the service, it just didn't measure up to our previous experience.
Breakfast was the typical English and continental offering with staff offering a very efficient service.
I must say, the setting at Culleys is beautiful and the decor is the perfect mix of industrial, traditional and modern.
We had a good stay overall, the staff were great and the building is beautiful but we were fairly disappointed that it didn't deliver on a similar level to what it had done on our first visit.

The hotel is very unique and has a lot of character (apart from the building work going on around the front and side). The staff were all very friendly and seemingly knowledgeable and overall the stay was pretty good but there were a few niggles. When we first got there we were directed to the lifts and tried (and failed) to find our room on the first floor as there was a closed corridor we'd not been told about that had a sign saying not to enter under any circumstances or something similar. This was apparently the only way to our room and so we took a chance! The room was ok, fairly basic for the price paid. The decor wasn't to my taste (blue and orange) but done tastefully enough. The saving grace was the spa bath, which to be honest was THE reason I'd booked this hotel over the St David's Hotel. Parking was easy to find and although expensive wasn't the hotel's fault. Drinks in the bar were expensive but on a par with hotel prices and my wine didn't taste quite right. I did query it but was told all was as it should be. We just stayed for one drink there and went into the Bay for more. Breakfast in the hotel was good, lots of choice and staff very helpful. My biggest niggle was that our room wasn't serviced at all on the Sunday (We stayed for 4 nights). My partner had to go to reception to pick up new towels and water. He was asked if we wanted someone to service the room at that point but it was very late in the day and we just wanted to get into bed. I probably would stay again (mainly for the bath!) but nothing gave me the wow factor and I think we'd try the St David's Hotel next time.

They don't have a car park, the nearest car park is a 10 min walk (Pierhead St car park) there is a drop off/pick up point at the hotel. The Pierhead is modern well lit, and has CCTV on all floors. The Hotel will give you a discount code but its just £12 for 24 hrs and you can pay in advance and get a pre paid ticket. This is much cheaper than the car parks in the city eg parking in John Lewis will cost you £20 for the same 24 hr stay!
