Nothing too much trouble, warm friendly service from all staff, lovely huge rooms, accommodation was brilliant! Great food in restaurant, very helpful with young children highchairs etc. and lots of space.for families. Abergavenny is a lovely town in a spectacular area.

I worked in Abergavenny for 18 months and virtually lived in another prominent hotel in the town for that period. My wife and kids even joined me at weekends at that hotel on occasions. Why didn't I find this place? The food is excellent and value for money. The bedroom is huge and well appointed. There is an excellent selection... More

We experienced very slow service for our party of Six for Sunday Lunch. Although friendly and eager to please the staff seemed somewhat overwhelmed and lacked direction and leadership. Roast meats were acceptable but lacking in accompanying vegetables, the requested extra veg and potatoes never materialised.

We recently stayed here and found the hotel very tired and in need of a complete refurbishment. The staff were very helpful and the food served was well cooked. The hotel is in lovely surroundings but once again work and refurbishment is required a shame really as the place has so much potential.

We were meeting family for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. The Roasts were delicious. The starters also were very good, the one downside was the mushroom starter which was small and overpriced. The waiting staff were pleasant and attentive. My husband and I had decided to stay the night and were pleasantly surprised by the room. We were... More

We went for early dinner before the football. It was lovely and quiet, we sat out in the large conservatory which had nice views of the surrounding gardens. Even though it was quiet - one other group of three, our food took a while. I had the chicken, bacon and leek pie, it was pretty good, sauce was very runny... More

The reception was unmanned and slow. The receptionist when she came was pleasant and showed me to my room. Room 8 has no windows with light and ventilation being derived from a rectangular open roof light. There is no blind on the skylight. Room itself was adequate size. Bathroom minimal toiletries and lacked any grab handle to assist in getting... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Plas Derwen is a fantastic pub restaurant which offers exceptional food at ordinary prices. Located within easy reach of the A40 and A465 (Heads of the Valleys Road), it was redeveloped to a high standard in April 2007. All our food is cooked to order, using produce from local suppliers, listed on the back of our weekly changing menus, enabling you to have a different dish with every visit. There is also a Specials board and a Fish Specials board for even more variety. This is a warm, welcoming venue with pastel colours and a large see through feature fireplace. The building dates back 600 years and the refurbishment has been sympathetically undertaken to reflect old meeting new. With contemporary furnishing, the traditional slant has been retained with many nooks and crannies around the pub. The Garden Room, Lounge Bar and double Conservatory are separate rooms offering different experiences. Some areas have leather sofas and leather tub chairs. ... more   less
