Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal.

The Malmaison Newcastle is a hotel that many guests cherish for its well-maintained rooms and notable cleanliness, despite a few suggestions for improvement. Its prime location near city attractions and the quayside is consistently lauded, although the vibrant location comes with some noise complaints. While the gloomy atmosphere receives mixed reviews, the hotel's amenities, including the dining experience, are frequently praised. Opinions on value vary, with some guests finding the pricing reasonable and others pointing out high costs. The comfortable and spacious rooms are a highlight, yet some call for better lighting and modern touches. Service at the Malmaison Newcastle generally earns high marks for attentiveness and professionalism, even with occasional slow responses.

Stayed here for one night as it was a Christmas gift and we chose the winter package, which included a cocktail each and 2 course meal which was to the value of £20 each. Check in is 3pm, we weren't allowed any earlier so left our case. Friendly staff at reception with local accents. We were allocated a front room with a view of the Tyne bridge through one window and millennium bridge in another. 2 TVs in the room, one near our seated area and one opposite the bed. There was safe in the room. Bathroom was tiny, and only had handwash, body wash and shampoo in bottles on the wall. I thought a hotel of this calibre would have had conditioner and body lotion. We went along the quay for a couple of drinks, then back to the hotel. The bar was very decadent, and the cocktails we had were lovely. We went to the restaurant which was quite dim, we noticed some people using the torches on their phone to read the menu! We had smoked salmon with rye bread for starters which was very nice. My husband had the fish cake and l had the sea bass. We were asked if we wanted potatoes or chips as they didn't come with the meal! We shared some chips.

Both meals were very nice, but I certainly didn't feel full.

We had a coffee each in the bar, which at £3.50 each which was ok, but thought it would have included a biscuit at that price.

Bed and pillows were very comfy.

We didn't have breakfast there, we went to quay ingredient for a sausage sandwich.

Check out was 12 noon. Would stay again.

From arrival to departure everything was perfect. Thee front desk staff were very friendly and welcoming. Check in was simple and quickly done. The 6th floor room was very good with a river view onto the Millennium Bridge over the Tyne. The bathroom was fabulously appointed with both bath and separate shower cubicle with Rainforest Shower head. We had booked Bed and Continental Breakfast which had a very good range of choices (I would recommend the Granola with fruit and yoghurt bowl....lovely!) and on the final morning we took up the option of paying £4 per head extra for the cooked breakfast. My partner had the full English which she loved and I had the Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon which was beyond tasty....highly recommended!
All of the staff were superb, but a special mention has to go to Rhys in the Brasserie. Very friendly, very professional.
On our final evening we ate at the Chez Mal Restaurant and one again we could not fault the food. Just wonderful.
The Covid Safety measures were top-notch.
I cannot fault the Malmaison at all. It lived up to everything that I expected.

We were very impressed with how well laid out the room was for a wheelchair user. Some thought had gone into making it an accessible room
Only down side menu in the restaurant, was not very exciting.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Malmasion are now our hotel of choice.

We have visited many times and stayed in all classes of room. This time as extra special treat for my birthday we stayed in what is supposed to be best room in hotel The Arc Royal suite.

On arrival to hotel we were not greeted with usual friendliness which is not what we have come to expect. As I normally go every year for my birthday on arrival you normally get vouchers to exchange for a drink free of charge in bar not this time ?

Room has excellent views but nowhere near as big as corner suites. Room felt very disjointed too. No plug sockets near bed. tea and coffee facilities in wardrobe no where near plug and when we moved them to desk area the kettle was on its side as had short wire and plugs were high up. There was lot of dust on walls and lots came down she I shut the blinds not usual for Malmaison Newcastle. Also lots of marks on walls & what looks like cigarette burn in sofa. Could also do with more lighting as there are lots of dark areas due to colour of furniture wardrobe etc Also bed was not comfortable, felt quite lumpy in parts like it could do with a new mattress. Only one remote for two TVs and only freeview available!

Bar area although not particularly busy staff were making drinks for Resturant guests so took a while to be served, lady apologised but guy working behind bar was miserable. We ate in Resturant as part of package, food and staff were all good, apart from not filling up water glasses and not really checking to see if we wanted more drinks. Upon check out we were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay! Although they might have got a mouthful if they had

Only other plus point it Good to see Malmaison are caring about environment now and not using throw away toiletries and saying they have things at reception if need cotton buds, shower caps etc

I will not be returning for a while as I feel let down and it’s not normal service and standards I expect for nearly £300!

We were excited to book ourselves in at Malmaison Newcastle since we heard very positive reviews on the hotel brand Malmaison.

Parking was easy at 10 pounds per night just across the hotel and location was convenient to visit town. We booked a standard room and asked for a view in the booking comments … little did we know it would be a view on the parking lot with quite loud traffic on the streets (back of the hotel). Later in the evening, I checked with the reception if they had any ear plugs since it was quite noisy in the room and was invited to go to the supermarket at 11pm to purchase some. I was not offered another quieter room or even to upgrade for another quieter room (which I would have happily paid for since I had a very bad night).

The room was ok - nice design and ok size. It appeared clean but note that you will only get 1 pillow per person (very thin) and that there is no hand shower in the bathtub. The bathroom could have used a little freshen up since it had rusty screws and dirty ceilings.

Breakfast was included in our rate. While the continental buffet was disappointing (no cheese, no cold cuts) the hot option was really nice and the staff very friendly. Everything was tasty.

As an incentive to book direct, the Malmaison website offered a cocktail voucher… which didn’t show up on our booking confirmation emails. While I checked both with the reception and customer service on the phone, I got the same reply: if it doesn’t show up in the email, then there are no cocktail vouchers.

Overall, the experience was disappointing and I would not recommend staying in this hotel despite some attractive offers. There was absolutely nothing special about this hotel and I had a terrible night.

Dear AmauryXH I'm sorry to read that you found your stay disappointing - Please accept my apologies for this.. Unfortunately unless you book one of our room category's that specifies a view, we are unable to allocate these based on booking comments. The breakfast offering has had to change due to Covid safety measures introduced during the pandemic and we are hoping to make changes and additions once we are confident this can be done in a safe and controlled way. I do hope that we can have the opportunity to welcome you back again soon. Kind regards, Chris Lyall General Manager

Malmaison is always my top choice when staying in Newcastle.
Service and staff are so welcoming and friendly and rooms have great views of the toon and bridge, especially at sunset.

Breakfast is always served with a smile and I love that all Malmaisons are fresh to order, not buffets.

Having stayed at mal newcastke many times i would have classed newcastle as being on of my favourites especially the ark royal suite that i usually try to book, but however my latest stay was nothing short of abysmal, the hotel seems very dated now and the room we got this time (chateaux) was bland at best, pillows poor, lack of toiletries especially jiggy with the figgy oil was a big dissapointment and seems more like a travel lodge now with wall mounted soap etc. The toilet has not been cleaned properly and has what looks like poo down the side of the toilet bowl. Cigarette ash down between the bath and the sink, and hairs in the sink. For a hotel to say they have been deep cleaned and extra steps taken in the current climate this is obviously not happening. The menu in the hotel is now poor compared to my previous visits, the bar cocktail menu was disspointing and what i did purchase what hardly bigger than a shot and very expensive for what it was. I cancelled my dinner reservation and left the bar and ate out. I stay in hotels all over the country and spend 3/4 of the year in hotels for work so like to spend big and have a nice different change when travelling with my wife for pleasure. Unfortunately given the obvious cut backs and decline in quality i will not be hurrying back. I am now in the gateshead hilton in an executive suite with all bottled toiletries ,a bigger cleaner room, free breakfast and drinks vouchers for half the price of your room. After talking to friends and family about the malmaison it seems i am not the only one with these views and i would reccomend elsewhere as better value for money now.

I do believe that you have spoken to my deputy regarding your stay prior to leaving your review and I'm sorry that following the issues being discussed that you felt that this hadn't been resolved when an explanation of the brand changes prior and post Covid-19 was given. We visited Newcastle for the weekend and chose Malmaison as I had stayed there a long time ago, but remembered that its location on the riverfront was lovely, and convenient to walk into the city centre.
We found it easy to book online, and it is a 5 - 10 minute walk from the nearest metro station (which you can catch from the airport).
We were greeted with a really friendly reception. The guy was friendly, helpful and very informative, which was a great start to the break.
We booked an upgraded river view room which was spacious, clean, nicely decorated and had one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The only downside was that the bottled water in the room was not complementary (but the tap water tasted fine).
There was also an occasional loud knocking in the mornings, which I can only put down to the fact that we were on the second floor and our room was above the Starbucks, so, on other floors this may not be an issue.
We never had breakfast or an evening meal there, but the bar was really nice and the staff very efficient and friendly.
I would definitely stay here again, and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone wishing to stay in a quality hotel by the river in Newcastle.
We will be back !

Booked a room with a view for my partners birthday and that’s what we got lovely
We checked in, the receptionist was efficient but after 3 times asking what we were here for (a birthday) and we were dining at a restaurant over the road he continued to ask if we wanted booked into the hotel restaurant clearly not really listening or interested..

Room was lovely on first sight but the bathroom was dirty
Bath was full of hair, mirror what looked like toothpaste all over and the floor filthy

We had to purchase drinks from a machine as there was no complementary water?

Breakfast good staff efficient but all had a look of worry on their face?
It wasn’t easy to order, the continental was vile but the cooked breakfast at an extra £4 per person was okay..

Nice to get away but wouldn’t return

Seven of us booked for Sunday lunch in the main hotel on 29 December; my Dad, my brother, his wife and 3-1/2 yr old son who were up from London over Christmas, and me, my husband and daughter whose birthday falls on that day.

Even though I'm local, it's the first time I've been to Malmaison, and first impressions were good. It's cosy when you walk into reception and we were directed upstairs by the polite guy on reception.

Our waitress/server for the day immediately introduced herself as Tessie and once we were seated, she took our coats and handed out the menus. I was aware that the cost per head was £29.99 for Sunday lunch, which I thought was pretty steep, but it was a family occasion and my daughter's birthday so I kicked my reservations to one side.

I don't know if this was a regular menu or a special one for the Christmas period but it was extensive and included a glass of Prosecco. Tessie asked our names and I don't know which trick she used to memorise them but she never got any of them wrong. This, coupled with her attention to our table ensured we had an excellent dining experience. She is an asset to Malmaison.

Tessie explained the way Sunday lunch worked. Just off the restaurant there's another large dining area with a hot and cold buffet laid out. There were two flavours of soups served in large tureens on a separate table. The centre table included at least six different breads, smoked salmon, seafood salad, pasta salad, green salad, mediterranean salads, a myriad of cheeses and continental meats. It was fresh and inviting and you could be tempted to overfill your plate but I have a gastric condition that prevents me from doing that (unfortunately!).

The next course was dinner which included vegetarian choices. I went with the roast beef, Yorkshire pud and seasonal veg. It was 'okay'. Not the best Sunday roast I've had in a restaurant but not the worst. I went with Creme Brulee for pud and this was huge, or at least bigger than I'm used to. It's usually served in a ramekin but this was in a silver fluted tart tin. The custard was dense, but delicious, and I had to regretfully leave half.

Our table was booked for 1pm and we left at 5pm. Tessie was in no hurry to move us on and we felt well looked after. So much so, that in addition to the 10% service charge that they'd already added to the bill, we gave her an additional £20.

And yes, I think the £29.99 was worth it.
