Detailed Reviews
Booked this as a surprise for my partner celebrating a work promotion!
I booked us the dusk and dine package which included DBB, 3 hours use of the spa and a king bedroom stay! I
We checked in first with a very friendly receptionist that complimented my phone case, we were able to access to the room before 2.30pm which is good and also unusual as many places won't dare let you in until 3pm. We put our bags in the room - was a pretty average hotel room with a garden view, modern enough not dated, quite nice and over all clean - 2 things the bed throw could have done with a wash or some sort of thorough stain removal and there was a couple of hairs in the bath but I don't know of any hotel I've been to that doesn't have a small imperfection such as that so I wasn't too worried.
I arranged to have a 'congratulations' mini dessert plate to be placed in the room however the downside was they wrote 'Happy Anniversary' - wasn't quite the right celebration which was a little bit annoying but my partner wasn't too fussed he enjoyed it all the same.
We were really impressed with everything, the spa was amazing and we were so happy there was hardly anyone else in there meaning we even got the hydro pool to ourselves for most of it!
We also got to keep a tote bag and sliders each (not the usual white towelling ones but proper rubber ones)
We were booked in for 7.30pm for dinner, the restaurant was completely full and I can't fault any of it, the food tasted amazing, the service was amazing and incredibly quick especially as it was a full house and they had a large party in too!
My partner had the fish and chips and I had the leek and emmental cheese tortellini, as it had salted feta, a sundried tomato sauce and olives I was worried it might taste overly salty but nope! The sauce was lovely and tasty and thick - I'd go back there just for that!
We both had a good night sleep, comfy bed and the room was nice and dark even on the next sunny morning - which made my partner happy.
Breakfast again was busy but was good service, I had a cheese omelette which was cooked perfectly and my partner had a full english - I prefer the made to order stuff rather than a buffet breakfast with sad looking food in hot tins.
Overall had a lovely stay and will be back in the future!

We have been regular visitors for 15 years or more, we love the place and the surroundings being able to watch the horses in the morning. Special mention to Evie who met us on arrival she is brilliant and also as always Rebecca so good to see she is still around. Overall the service is top notch, the food very good especially breakfast - on occasions they do seem to rush ie you are clearly eating you cereal and you are being rushed to order the cooked breakfast. My only concern would be the maybe some areas need a freshen up especially the bathrooms, also why not have some memory foam pillows for those people who can't sleep on a bag of air. We will always come back!

We had an amazing Sunday roast here, huge portions with all of the sides you need without having to pay extra for stupid things like cauliflower cheese. Desserts were also delicious and lovely attentive staff. Easily one of the best roast dinners I have found in the area, will definitely be returning. Service was fantastic despite a very busy restaurant. 10/10.

We booked into the Bedford Lodge Hotel in good faith for one night for 09/12/2023 at £215 and paid in advance. I am writing this review as I was dissatisfied with response I received from the Deputy General Manager David Croucher. When a service is provided and it doesn't reach expectation, reasonably, you expect a reduction in the costs. If the hot and cold water was not available in the room you would expect reasonable consideration for compensation for such a shortfall. Well, at the Bedford Lodge Hotel this doesn't happen! We paid our £215 in good faith and the failure to provide hot and cold running water in the morning when we woke up was totally unsatisfactory. So no bath or shower, no basin facilities to brush teeth etc etc... basically nothing to wash with at all! I reported the dilemma and only when we were about to checkout at the front desk were we told that we could use the spa facilities, however we were on a tight schedule and simply just did not have the time and a taxi was due to turn up in 5 minutes, so it was impossible to consider this. If a service is not up to that advertise then the paying customer has every right to complain and get compensated. At £215 you would have thought that out of common courteousy a pragmatic solution would have been considered. The only recompense suggested was a upgrade to a junior suite on another stay valid for 6 months. If the BLH think that I am going to go all the way to Newmarket to spend another £215 in their hotel just to experience one on their junior suites they are mistaken. It was a ridiculous offer with no substance. So on reflection if this hotel falls short of any of its perceive facilities don't expect them to accommodate any request for a reduction in what you have paid! I would welcome any response from any one at the Bedford Lodge Hotel more senior management or executives other than the Deputy General Manager to discuss the matter. I did not pay £215 for my wife and I to have cold shower on a very cold December morning and I would expect more compensation than a putrid upgrade to a junior suite which was totally unacceptable. I await your response

My daughter booked the room as a birthday gift for me. She contacted the hotel to arrange for a room overlooking the stables and told them it was a birthday gift. However, when I arrived i was given a rather dismal room overlooking the bar patio. After that disappointment, I decided to use the pool and jacuzzi. I was told to take a towel from the room and wear a dressing gown. That would have been fine if I didn't have to walk down a freezing cold outdoor path to access the pool. I was unable to use the lockers because they needed a £1 coin. While walking to the few sun beds, the floor was so slippery I had a fall. The jacuzzi was occupied by two men but there was plenty of space for others. They told me they had booked and noone else could use it.
I went back to the room to take a bath but couldn't reach the plug as the shower screen was glued in place. After showering, I could not find anywhere to plug in the hairdryer so had to use a plug by the kettle. I then decided to lie down a while and was upset that despite requesting hypoallergenic bedding it was all feather. I complained to reception and mentioned the room issue and the lovely young man swapped me into the room I requested initially and arranged for new bedding.
While this was going on, I went for a light meal in the bar. The bar staff were mostly pleasant. The beef sandwich I ordered was inedible. The bread stale and beef so tough I could not cut it. I had a coffee and a gin and tonic which all came to £35.
The bed was extremely uncomfortable and the pillows like rocks. I also had an itchy rash on my legs.
After a mostly sleepless night in pain from falling, I was looking forward to the breakfast I ordered to come to the room. It should have been croissants, granola, yoghurt and coffee. The table by the window was thick with dust so I had to clean it. When the food arrived it was stewed fruit, a huge bowl of just mixed nuts, cold toast and lukewarm coffee. By this time I just wanted to leave the hotel so left without eating or asking for what I ordered.
I usually stay at the jockey club rooms and sincerely wish I had done but my daughter wanted to suprise me with what is meant to be the best hotel in Newmarket.
The only positive was William from the reception who couldn't have been kinder.

The hotel is relatively well appointed with the luxury of spa and pool. The rooms are comfortable and of a good standard.
Whilst we always enjoy staying at this Hotel, we feel the restaurant has lost its way. The problem lies with the "management" and perception of what they want the restaurant to be. As a result it does not fulfil the needs of any guest seeking a reasonable "fine" dining experience. The bar area is crowded with those eating bar meals and thus not available to restaurant diners wanting a pre-dinner hour drink and chat.
The menu is poorly constructed and our own experience in August will possibly result in us eating elsewhere on the next visit. The Lamb Rump was offered on the Grill menu with the beef steaks which is hardly normal. It was expensive at circa £40 and served only with rocket (surely it was a mistake...No it was not) and we had to order two sides of vegetables at extra cost, making the dish over £50. It was served not just pink but raw which the waitress thought was normal.
The bread with the dip starter was like rubber...waitress informed us that Chef told her to put in microwave before serving guest !!!!
The wine list was dreadful and overpriced.
In effect a nightmare meal. I'm not sure why we paid but when I spoke of our experience on check out, I was offered the sadly normal "Oh I'm sorry to hear about that, I will convey your criticism to the kitchen! Compensation might be a better solution.

I travel for work. They pick up the tab.
This is extremely expensive. £175 a night on last stay. The staff are very good, very friendly and helpful. However not the staffs fault, poor Wi-Fi in rooms.
I'm here for work. I have to tether a phone in the room, this has happened in virtually every room l've stayed in as the wifi drops out. I had better internet in west Africa, a decade ago!
Service charges on everything. Even a single drink. This is annoying I’ve never been in other hotels and had to pay an extra 10% just for a singe drink. Yet on a multi day stay, the hotel does not always top up the coffee etc! After a day at work you have to go ask for coffee! Even after paying £175 a night. The rooms are starting to look tired. The TVs are very outdated and show a code for sky movies, that simply doesn't work and I’ve never been able to get it to work. Perhaps this is an extra?Doesn’t say that on the card though. Simply 0000 for sky movies. Channel unavailable.
This hotel is used a lot for business.
Sort out the internet, we are in 2024, not 2004. It's virtually impossible to work from the room.
Loud noise coming from outside the hotel. You’ll need air plugs depending on which room you are in!

What a lovely hotel with very pleasant staff. Our room was very nice with the fluffiest duvet and I really appreciated the plunger coffee and Teapig tea in the room with take out cups- such a lovely idea. Our only let down was breakfast when I was given a breakfast with gluten in it after informing the staff I am coeliac . Thankfully I questioned it and another breakfast was made but sadly not for another 30 minutes therefore my husband and I could not enjoy the experience together…

I brought my mother an overnight stay as an early Mother’s Day present. From the outside the hotel is well presented and so is the reception but unfortunately it stops here, the room was tired and out dated with marks and chips on the wall. The room however was clean and it was nice that the hotel provided free fresh milk and bottled water to make teas and coffees. We were informed upon arrival that we had use of the leisure facilities and thought the pictures shown on the website of the spa was the lesuire facilities but were mistaken and instead there is a separate lesuire centre on site with a pool and gym. All I can say was the pool was outdated and dirty and needs a serious makeover. When speaking to some of the members in the sanua they also noted how dated the facilities are but noted that management didn’t really care as there no competition around in Newmarket that offers both swimming and gym facilities. We spoke to reception about the spa use and was told the entry fee was £65 each and that we only had access for about 2 and half hours, so we decided against this. We went in to town for dinner as we didn’t like the look of the menu choices at the hotel restaurant. The only decent thing about our stay was the breakfast which was included in the price. You have the option of continental and or a full cooked breakfast which was really nice and the staff where very pleasant and attentive. It such a shame about the hotel overall appearance given the price you pay, unfortunately we will not be returning.

Celebrating an anniversary you really do want somewhere special. Staying at the hotel for the weekend and eating/drinking somewhere with a reputation for luxury and indulgence. On this occasion the Bedford Lodge fell well short of this reputation.
Living in Suffolk I know the BL well and have dined there many times. But, I've never stayed the weekend and had that immersive experience before. The afternoon tea was really 'nothing special'. Considering the rise in popularity the BL are competing for the afternoon tea 'purse' and given the opportunity I would not pay these prices again. Scones were delicious though as was the sausage roll. BUT the cakes lacked any real taste and the rest of the afternoon tea, frankly tasteless and boring. I would definitely look for an alternative venue if it's afternoon tea you're looking for. Atmosphere doesn't disappoint. BL still has that luxury feel. Staff lacked an attentiveness (but were very pleasant), the level of service wasn't there and value for money was extremely poor. BL won't be able to trade for long on their reputation. Seriously the food MUST speak for itself.
Our room was again 'nothing special' and the little luxuries (nice towels, a robe and Moulten Brown bath things) did not make up for the shockingly poor mattress and thin pillows. Really a Premier Inn would have been much better and not only that but a third of the price. At £185 a night I definitely will NOT be staying again. When we gave our feedback on checkout there was no glimmer of empathy or any kind of remedial offering. Almost like they're getting that feedback all the time and don't wish to do anything about it.
Breakfast in bed WAS a lovely touch though. That we did like a lot!
On Sunday we opted to have lunch in the restaurant. Again very disappointing. It arrived luke warm, roast potatoes were horrible. Really not sure what cooking method was used for those but they were like rocks, really unpleasant. I've had better roast dinner's in pubs and not spending £20 for a plate.
Service was lacking (though it wasn't that busy), no one came to ask if everything was OK, if they had I'd have shared that our food wasn't hot enough. While the waitress did make a gesture of good will when we gave our feedback it really wasn't enough to compensate.
Despite its rosette's and reputation the Bedford Lodge fell well short. I won't be spending the weekend there again.

Hi Linda,
As we were on the first floor I’m not sure that it does. Maybe you could book a ground floor room.
