me and my boyfriend had planned a spontaneous trip to oxford and saw this hotel, after looking at some of the pictures and reviews, we thought it would be high quality for the cheapest price we could pay (£109 for the night).
once we had arrived and paid £40 for the carpark across the road for 24 hours, we couldn’t even find the place. we saw an “oxo bar” sign placed on the corner of the address that google maps claimed the hotel was. the place looked extremely run down with smashed and dirty windows. once we had called the hotel to confirm where the entrance was, we entered and was surprised by the pleasantness of the reception area. we then thought that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, and remained open minded about the place.
once we were checked in we headed up to our room, when lugging our suitcase up the stairs due to their being no lift, we noticed stains on the carpet covering the stairs, and windows looking out to a dirty roof and courtyard, this is when our opinion of the place started declining again.
we then got to our room and was fairly disappointed upon first impressions, it wasn’t awful, but certainly was not as “fancy” as the pictures looked. after looking more intently around the room whilst putting luggage away, we noticed damp and mould near the shower area, drip and dirt marks covering the walls in both bathroom and bedroom, a wardrobe with no back, stained cushion from the bed, filthy windowsill, and paint and dirt covering the area next to the radiator. worst of all, when we opened the cupboard in the bathroom, we were greeted by a plethora of stains due to god knows what and what only looked like mould.
after finding all of this we headed down to reception, which was empty. after ringing the bell for the attention of the staff twice, the receptionist appeared. after explaining the issue and asking for either a room switch, partial refund, or even a free drink in the bar, the receptionist stated very firmly that “he could not discuss this with me as it was not his job” and that he was “not dealing with me” and gave me the emergency number that was stated to be the managers.
overall this hotel is completely deceiving and i would not recommend it to anyone. judging on the appearance of the outside and seeing the state of the stairs, i could only assume other rooms were in a state like this too.
As Aussies, we don’t get to see a lot of old, historic buildings back home, so we were thrilled to see authentic, vintage brickwork staring out from the wallpaper that had strategically torn just right. It’s like a peek into the past, free of charge!
If you’re into nightclubs, you’re in for a treat—the music thumps through the walls until 4 a.m. So much value packed into one stay! And forget setting an alarm. Who needs one when the symphony of garbage trucks and a window that’s permanently stuck open will gently wake you at the crack of dawn?

Our room was situated above a busy bus station so if you’re going for a quiet night stay in Oxford and don’t want people screaming at 4am, maybe go else where!!
Just to top things off we had to ram the bedside table against the door as someone presumably with a key was fiddling with the lock trying to get in, even after we called out to make our presence known.
Very weird place, wouldn’t recommend.. I could just about justify the hotel itself for a cheaper price (a fiver lol) because the location was good but £114 per night was very steep for what it was.

The Proprietor was honest that the hotel does have some wear and tear, but he reassured my safety fears (may not meet fire standards) by stating that he would open his Health and Safety Monitoring files upto us if it was necessary.
On arriving, YES the front door is not particularly welcoming but the Receptionist on the front desk was polite and helpful, which did put me at ease.
The room we had was on the first floor overlooking the bus station. So if your a light-sleeper avoid.
The hotel is above the OXO Bar, a decent bar with a good choice of drinks and cocktails. The Bar closes around 1.30am on weekends and I could hear the music relatively clearly when I got into bed, but it didn't stop me from sleeping. But again if your a light-sleeper avoid this room.
Our room was HUGE. It was CLEAN (and yes I checked every inch of the bed after reviews), it was warm and the bed had a good solid mattress, meaning we slept well. The towels were also clean with no stains. The ensuite bathroom was also huge. Good size shower and the bathroom was clean. We even had free small bottles of bodywash and shampoo which was a bonus. We also had tea and coffee making facilities (and yes the kettle was empty and free from floating sugar wrappers, that one guest had reported!).
The room was nicely decorated and yes it did have a few wear and tear issues, needed a fresh lick of paint in places and the windows could have done with a better clean but it wasn't the horrendous experience some other guests had reported. We may have just been lucky on this occasion but I am writing a review based on my initial findings.
The location is fantastic. You step out onto a bustling street with bars and restaurants. It's a 5 minute walk from the Central train station and the bus station is behind the building. Oxford has an eclectic mix of people, which I found interesting and thus weekend my other half is showing me around some of his old haunts when he used to be based in Brize approximately 30 years ago!
All in all I am content with my accommodation. It has everything we need and the central location was what sold it to us.

Our room only had a sink and the hot water tap was impossible to turn on. There wasn’t even a toilet in the room. I asked to change rooms ( for a cleaner room and a toilet) and was told there were none available.
There was noise coming from a nightclub until the early hours. Woken up at 5am from all the buses starting their engines literally behind the hotel.
There are no keys to your room. Instead you are given a code on a post-it note to get into the hotel and your individual room. We did not feel safe leaving our belongings in the room.
We had no choice but to stay the night but I would avoid at all costs.

We arrived at the hotel on 12th August 2022 and due to check out on 14th August. When we entered the room, well, it was just disgusting. There was mould on the bedsheets and damp on the walls, both of which are health hazards (will also be reporting the Eurobar to the Oxford tourism board). There was also dirt on the walls and bedsheets. My partner and I decided that we couldn't stay there and risk getting ill. Having looked at other reviews, it sounds like other customers have experienced similar conditions.
We informed the hotel manager of the above and that we could not stay there. The manager did not even attempt to offer us another room, which indicates that the other rooms in the hotel were in a similar state.
