Welcome to The Grand, York's first and only AA five-star rated hotel. This stunning hotel opened in May 2010 following the extensive refurbishment of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters – one of York’s most iconic Edwardian buildings. Originally constructed in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’ for what was then one of the most powerful public companies in the country, today it is the region’s leading luxury hotel and has established a global reputation for its first-class service, stylish bedrooms and unique historic atmosphere. Following a £15 million refurbishment in 2017, The Grand now boasts 207 individually designed bedrooms, a beautiful spa to relax, a destination restaurant, a cocktail bar and meeting & event spaces. There is something for everybody to enjoy - we look forward to welcoming you soon!

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Top Class. Everything from start to finish was excellent. I could find no fault here at all. Parking is via concierge, so don't forget your £10 tip. A special shout out to Wayne, the doorman who greets everyone with a smile and a pleasant word. This gentleman truly turned an excellent stay into an exceptional one.

What a beautiful hotel, very close to the train station and centre of York. We stayed in the new "Roman" part of the hotel in an executive room, which was clean and very comfy. Bathroom was massive with large shower and bath. Would definitely recommend.

Very pleasant for an afternoon tea. Good experience all round, with a lovely selection of small bites and delicious champagne. Stunning building and an easy location from the train station. Good choice for any special occasion or simply a treat.

Beautiful old fashioned hotel with luxury suites and lovely dinner and breakfast, followed by a relaxing swimming-pool/jacuzzi. Second visit in 6 months. Staff are very friendly and accomodating. Fun games and treasure hunts to keep your kids occupied! Will be returning!

Everything you would expect from a 5* hotel. Spotless room, gorgeous bathroom, friendly staff. Birthday stay complimented with a free drink at the bar and a keepsake badge. Valet parking not cheap but a great service. Will be back again, didn’t have chance to check out the spa!

Room Tip: If you would like a quieter room ask to stay on the side of the hotel away from the China town.

Historical hotels are great, but only if you have a management company that keeps them in shape. This is not the case for The Grand in York. As the city’s only 5-star hotel you would think that this means there is pride attached to the title, but the experience has me thinking I would have gotten more value out of a stay at the 4-star hotel next door. If dusty rooms, broken hangers, empty minibars, stained curtains, broken vanity mirrors, rotting/missing bathroom caulk, non-closing shower doors, and a 1-inch gap under your room door so everyone can hear you and vice versa, are your thing then this is the place for you! In an executive room booking no less! No multi-country outlets or USB ports are available in your room, so if you didn’t bring a travel adapter you might find yourself running to a store to buy one, because guess what, the hotel only has a handful available yet are very aware of the demand for these. Usually in 5-star hotels, the norm is that housekeeping is on top of things. Well, The Grand has a different approach. After not having had turn down service 2 nights in a row and coming back in the afternoon after 5 hours out to a non-made-up room, a quick trip to the front desk was in order. Instead of simply apologizing, I was lectured that turn-down services are “only upon request” (even though the hotel information in your room says turn-down services are from 6:00pm to 9:30pm and upon request outside these hours) and that, normally, housekeeping may take until 5pm to clean your room. Having finally gotten an apology from the staff and an offer to have housekeeping sent to the room at once, I was not even offered a £3 coffee while I waited in the lounge for the cleaning to be completed. Very weak customer service for a 5-star hotel. It was all I needed to know about the management structure behind this hotel. It all made sense now as to why everything looked tired and forgotten. The only saving grace was the cappuccino, I paid for myself, in the 1906 Bar—props to the barkeep as she seemed the most competent of the staff encountered during my stay. Overall, if you like the dusty, run-down, tired hotels where the 5th star is very questionable, by all means, this is the place for you. If you’re like me and like competence, my suggestion is to book elsewhere. Note: Maybe the room quality is better in their adjacent building which seems to be a recent addition, but if you are placed in the main building then this is what you can expect.

Dear Tim D, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback following your stay in our hotel. I am truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet the high standards we uphold. This is the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in, the rooms, the food, the service and the experience was beyond expectations in every way! I stayed on a business trip for three nights, and by the end of it I didn't want to leave. Would highly recommend, either on business or pleasure, you'll not be disappointed!

Our stay at The Grand, York was nothing short of amazing! From the moment we arrived we felt the warmth of the staff, and the beautiful ambiance of the building itself. We were kindly gifted a room upgrade and a lovely card (with chocolate-covered strawberries!), due to it being our anniversary and my partner’s birthday. The room was spacious, extremely clean and even had underfloor heating and a sound system installed in the bathroom! The service we received whilst staying was impeccable, and the location is a 10 minute walk to central York. The architecture of the building is befitting of its name, most certainly worthy of the five stars awarded. Thank you to the staff at The Grand for making our special occasions so memorable, we look forward to our next stay!

We had booked the arrangement that includes the breakfast and the afternoon tea. The staff in the hotel is very friendly and forthcoming. The age of the hotel is visible when you look to the somewhat outdated art deco style of the interior. It is not a cosy place, the reception, the hallways, the corridor, the bar and the rise restaurant are all large with the dark wood decoration. The room was fine and clean, the bed very comfortable. We had dinner at The Rise restaurant ant that was disappointing qua quality and to expensive for the meal served. We had 1 starter, 2 mains, 1 desert and 3 medium glasses of wine for £ 168.00. Due to some health issues we had to cancel the afternoon tea during check out. After requesting a refund for the unused afternoon tea, the best refund they could do was £34.50 which is the price for afternoon tea for 1 person. I was not too impressed by that. The next time I visit York, I won't stay at the Grand again but find a smaller and a more cosy hotel. But again the staff in the hotel was very friendly.

We have recently returned from a 2 night stay at The Grand and overall had a great experience. Highly recommended for family trips. 1. Parking: We went for the valet parking which is convenient as you can arrive at the hotel, unload and then the valet takes your car to the nearby NCP for you. You can park at your NCP yourself for a cheaper price, however we were informed by the hotel that they have their own floor in the NCP carpark so it's really down to personal preference. 2. Check-in: The process was pleasant and efficient. The member of staff was very polite and interacted with our children. They also provided packs to the children containing various items including 'Grand Dollars' which could be redeemed for a dessert, drink and other items available on a menu in the room. 3. Rooms: We had two twin rooms which were modern, clean and spacious. Very happy with the facilities. If possible, ask for a room that doesn't face the road, it can get pretty noisy. 4. Breakfast: You have various options: a la carte, hot buffet and continental. Everything was of a good standard but make sure you don't leave things too late as you can be waiting around for pastries etc to be replenished. 5. Location: Excellent location. Easy to walk to location attractions, restaurants, tea rooms etc. For example, the Minster and Jorvik centre are all within walking distance. 6. Why not 5 stars: We had an unfortunate incident on the last morning where there was a mixup and breakfast hadn't been added to one of the rooms even though we'd requested it. The member of staff made the situation quite awkward and I won't re-hash it here. We did speak to the front desk afterwards and they rectified the situation in a satisfactory manner.
