IT was an inauspicious start. We had booked a double room with a walk in shower (we find it increasingly difficult to climb into a bath to have a shower, and to climb out again), and had this confirmed in an e-mail. We were surprised therefore to be given a room with a bath shower.
It was quickly and efficiently rectified and our new room (complete with correct shower) was comfortable, quiet and large.
The staff were great throughout the hotel, but the restaurant staff especially were superb - both for breakfast (buffet style but served by the staff) and for one evening when we ate in the hotel.
The food is superb - although working to a restricted menu, the food was mouth watering, and looked attractive too!
Self isolating and hygiene procedures were well in place, hand sanitisers everywhere and staff all wearing face masks. One way system operating in restaurant area. Very well organised and thought out.
Yes, it is a bit on the expensive hotel, but it is THE hotel in Norwich.
Thoroughly recommended.
The Event's Manager Georgina was so accommodating and myself and the film crew felt that she and her team could not have done more to not only provide an excellent space in which to film and feel safe in the current climate.
The measures the hotel have put in place to keep staff and guests safe are impressive.
All the staff wore masks and a perspex screen at reception ensured a safe environment for check in and for any contact throughout the day.
Plenty of hand sanitising stations were dotted around. Easy to use and guests were using them without needing to be reminded.
I have enjoyed breakfast there before, but this time, the buffet style breakfast was replaced with table service with an extensive menu to choose from. Tables were suitably distanced and there was a nice feel to the dining area.
The room we were in for the shoot had been cleaned prior to our arrival and a seal placed on the door so we could feel assured that no one had been in it since cleaning. A nice touch. Hand sanitiser had been left in the room which we were able to use when leaving or re entering the room.
I did not stay there myself, but the film director said how impressed he was with his room.
I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending The Maids Head as a place to dine, stay or use the events spaces that are available.
Yes, it did mean there was no maid service to the rooms, but you could easily request more toiletries, refreshments, towels etc via the in room iPad.
The location is perfect, right next to the cathedral, with everything within walking distance & the convenience of car parking too.
Parts of the hotel date back to the 13th century and this adds to the overall experience. The decor is tastefully upheld, but perhaps worn in places like the stairs where the carpet will need replacing soon.
Our classic double room (306) was spacious and comfortable in the ‘traditional’ area of the hotel.
It was rather airless and stuffy, with a permanent musty smell (possibly damp, due to age?) so we were grateful for the small fan in addition to leaving the window open. I would have concerns what this would be like in hot weather.
The bathroom was fitted excellently.
Staff were friendly and attentive, particularly the breakfast crew who were super courteous & helpful.
We were initially surprised that breakfast was a self service buffet (hot & cold), but this was of a good standard and worked well. (Only niggle was lack of fresh fruit as opposed to tinned!)
They were short-staffed (possibly isolation issues?) so this did mean a lengthy wait for any service at the bar or courtyard.
Overall, this hotel is value for money and certainly worth a stay and we would consider returning in the future (but perhaps we’d upgrade to a better room!)
With all the recent happenings with the coronavirus, it was instantly apparent that this hotel took the health and hygiene of its guests and staff very seriously, with signs and sanitizers and cleaning in constant operation in various parts of the hotel. Stayed in the Wensum, very nice and comfortable. Only gripe was it was a little dark and traffic noise from outside was quite audible.
We have been travelling worldwide, including Japan Asia etc, and must say this was one of the nicest, if brief, stays in a hotel we have had. The young man who checked us in was very polite, and the chap who was lone working after midnight was very pleasant when letting us back into the hotel after we went for a night stroll.
I hope to return for longer next time.
