Hotel & staff outstanding but very disappointed with Gong Bar.
We got engaged at Gong in August 2014 and wanted to return as it’s our special place. As a resident, I emailed the hotel to book a table with a window seat 4 weeks before our stay and was offered one from 21.30 – 23.00.
On arrival, we were seated in the swimming pool area and not in the main bar. This was disappointing as drinks are served in plastic glasses and you’re away from the main bar area / atmosphere. I asked if we could move but the waiter advised the main bar was full.
At 22.30, the waiter gave us half an hour’s notice, reminding us we only had the table booked until 23.00. This I would’ve accepted BUT the main bar was half empty. I asked if we could move into the main bar for the remaining time, this agreed and we were given the name of our new waiter. I was extremely disappointed to see so many empty tables some by the windows and not once did this new waiter come to take our order. We waited but nothing.
I asked if we could remain in the bar as it was half empty but was told other customers were booked in. By now, it was 23.20 and no one had arrived. I showed the email I had received from the Gong Asst Bar Manager which clearly stated, “ you may remain in the bar until midnight if other guests don’t turn up”, highly unlikely to get a rush of customers at 23.20 on a Sunday evening..
When you’re a resident, have booked 4 weeks in advance and the bar is half empty, I really think we should have been permitted to stay. I’m more than happy to pay £70 for a bottle of wine however, I do not wish to sit in a swimming pool area, drink out of plastic glasses and smell chlorine.
Bitterly disappointed as Gong is such a special place for us

This is the second time we have stayed, both times being on the 47th floor with the bath over looking London. The view at night is amazing.
The staff turned down our room both nights while we was out, dimmed the lights, blinds half open, slippers at the side of the bed. This visit was for mine and my husbands anniversary, I walked in the room and I had a balloon and rose petals on the bed, was so pretty. All staff very friendly and helpful. Only down side to both stays is when getting ready there isn't a plug socket next to a mirror to do your hair in. I had to sit on the floor and use the thin mirrors that are floor to ceiling where the TV is. Other than that, it's has amazing views, amazing stuff and will look foward to returning again.
The staff handled their first day re opening after lockdown very well, all guests got face coverings and hand wipes free of charge.
I even stripped the bedding before we left for the room attendents, hoping it saved them sometime as a member of staff said it takes longer to turn around the rooms due to coronavirus.

Dear 839jodic, What a fantastic review and thank you so much for taking the time to share such a positive feedback after your recent experience at Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London! We are sincerely grateful that you chose to stay with us on our reopening weekend, most importantly on the very special occasion of your anniversary - Congratulations again! I trust our team will be as delighted as I am to read your kind words and positive comments about your overall experience, our beautiful facilities, and the friendly, helpful and professional service displayed by all. This is what we call "hospitality from the heart" here at Shangri-La, and something we are all very proud of. We have duly noted your point about the lack of plug socket next to a mirror in the room, and will certainly be looking into it. Our team are of course always happy to provide extensions leads or standing mirrors upon request - please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit. Finally, I wanted to say a heartfelt thank you for helping our colleagues by stripping the bed before you left the room. This was certainly not expected, but truly appreciated by our colleagues, who are all working extremely hard to make sure all the extra safety and hygiene measures we have implemented with our "Shangri-La Cares" programme are carefully respected to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone. I personally look forward to welcoming you back to our beautiful hotel in the clouds very soon... maybe for another special occasion? Best regards, Kurt Macher General Manager

We stayed last weekend to celebrate as a family for 4 milestone birthdays, 3 of which took place during lockdown. From the moment you arrive, the hotel is spectacular, the lift whisks you up to the reception area and Tings. The staff were extremely friendly and the service, was second to none. Due to heavy traffic we were running a little late, so we went straight in for a booked afternoon tea to celebrate my birthday, which was a fantastic experience with the theme of a picnic. Our waitress was amazing, friendly, attentive. The reception staff brought our key over to our table. We had the Iconic Suite and when we entered the blinds were down, with champagne and birthday cake waiting, when the blinds went up, we had birthday wishes on the window and a stunning view of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.
The bed was extremely comfortable and the best couple of nights sleep I'd had in a very long time, extremely relaxing, well equiped and clean. The breakfast was buffet style with an excellent choice and very tasty. Although you have to book a time slot, we didn't feel rushed.
The views from the swimming pool are amazing, over St Pauls, unfortunately due to Covid they have to restrict numbers, so be aware that you may have to wait. We would definiately recommend booking tables for food and just drinks as everywhere was fully booked.
From beginning to end, the experience was first class luxury and we felt extremely well cared for and important. We can't wait to go back.

Our party of 8 stayed at the Shangri La for one night in August.
Reception staff were very good, efficient and professional, our room was not ready but we could leave our bags with them and explore the city until our room was ready. The hotel phoned me to advise the room was ready which I felt was a nice touch.
Our bags had been delivered to our rooms when we went into them. The rooms themselves although well appointed were disappointing for the amount we had paid for a nights stay, we felt they were practical rather than luxurious.
We paid for a 180 degree view from our room, this was a nice extra but not sure if it was worth the £150 upgrade.
Our room rate included breakfast at the hotel. This unfortunately was a disappointment.
We were shown to the table and offered tea coffee etc etc. The order when it arrived was incorrect, this happened twice once with the first order and again with the second order.
The staff advised that breakfast was a serve yourself buffet. The usual suspects of scrambled egg, bacon, sausages together with pastries, cereals and fresh melon were provided, but as this is a 5 star hotel, I would have expected eggs benedict or other choices to be made available even if these had to be ordered separately. Staff advised that if we wanted eggs cooked a different way other than scrambled, they would have to be ordered individually. My other half ordered some fried eggs with his main breakfast, these turned up far too early and were left on our table to get cold while he was eating his cereal.
If you wanted toast, you had to queue to use the single 6 slice toaster provided and toast it yourself.
If your booking does not include breakfast in the room rate, then you have to pay £36 per person for this experience. My advice, if you are happy with to get this quality of breakfast, then walk down the road to the local premier inn and pay £10 saving yourself some money.
Check out was fine, very easy no problems with this aspect.
I would not stay in the Shard again as I do not feel it is value for money.

Bearing in mind this is a 5 star hotel and one of the most popular hotels in the World. We stayed in the Deluxe Suite and the room was amazing, spotless clean, comfortable with the best views of London.
Breakfast served from 07:00 - 11:00. We chose to book at 11:00 as that is what time we had to check out so it tied in nicely.
We went to seat at our table and was greeted with "If you want anything from the Continental you best hurry up as it shuts at 11:15." which was not very welcoming.
We wanted a full English breakfast, bacon, eggs, sausage etc, so we had to use the continental as this the only way you can get a full English breakfast, they don't cook it fresh for you, which we assumed they would.
Everything was near gone and we were left what can only be explained as "dregs". The sausages, were warm and sweaty. The bacon barely warm. We were forced to have wet scrambled eggs as this is all that was available and was also near gone. No pouched eggs or fried. The beans only had the juices remaining with no beans. Another couple walked in after us and were also very disappointed. They said "This is ridiculous if you are booked in for 11:00 there should be a full range of fresh and hot breakfast available until then. We totally agreed. We then sat down to eat our cold breakfast and the cleaning staff then started to hoover the room so the noise from that added to our disappointment. We felt very rushed to get out, which is crazy.
Now wouldn't you think a hotel of this recognition and being 5 star, you would be able to sit down and have a waitress come, take your order, and you be cooked an amazing Full English breakfast"
Absolutely disgraceful and I would go as far as saying that it is probably the worst breakfast experience we have ever received in a Hotel. I should not be writing this review from a 5 star hotel.

Stayed at the Shard for a special occasion. The reception is on the 35th floor, so the experience starts with the lift, however only one of the two lifts were operating, so we had a wait. Check in as quick and friendly. The room was impressive with a sense of theater as the blinds open as you come into the room with a panoramic view across London. The room was large, well laid out and with high quality fixtures. We had a corner room and due to the way the rooms are laid out we were able to see the people in the next room. We had to put the blinds up on one side which meant no view of the city. After seeing an advert my wife wanted to see a show. The show was sold out so I asked the concierge if they can get tickets. Not done this before and thought that concierge's would magically be able to get tickets, but was not he case. On the plus side a small birthday cake was delivered for my wife. After a lovely meal at a local restaurant we went to the bar on the 53rd (booked earlier). Shocked at the prices. £20 for a cocktail, but makes sense as you are also buying the view. Comfortable bed but disturbed sleep. Despite being so high up we could hear the traffic and and sirens. The next morning found my shoes (left out) were not cleaned. Tried the gym (great views, good equipment) and the pool (crowded, small). I was really looking forward to breakfast expecting that since it would cost £39 in a 5 star hotel it would wow me. I asked at the restaurant reception how it worked and was told it was a buffet. Had to wait a long time for my coffee. Eggs and bacon and sausages were not hot and run out of mushrooms. Buffet by the kitchen and so hearing the staff arguing over who's fault it was that drinks had not been made. Nice to have check out at 12, having a few more hours to look out over the city. Overall hard product is very good, but service was behind other 5 star hotels I have stayed at.

We stayed for three nights in total. Check in was simple and quick, the host showed us to our suite with a pot of freshly brewed tea. Our room was superb with power blinds, very spacious and all the facilities you would require.

As you could image the views over London were spectacular. Breakfast is served in the main restaurant, service was very slow, two of the three mornings I sent my poached eggs back as they were more like hard boiled, the staff looked harassed as it was very busy.

We had dinner in the evening, a fabulous table by the window. The service was extremely slow, we had our starter then waited and waited. We actually left the restaurant at that point, I spoke to the manger who kindly sent us some food to our room.

All in all a great experience to be in the Shard, sadly the food and service was substandard. My recommendation would be to give it a try, as they could have ironed out any problems by now.

One nights stay in a triple aspect room overlooking Tower Bridge was simply the best view from any hotel we have ever stayed in. The service, the food, the facilities were all from the very top drawer. The room was incredibly well equipped even down to chocolate in the mini bar. The bath fitted us both and was in the window so we soaked while drinking wine looking out over a Christmas time London while waiting for the restaurant to call us to say our window table was ready. Don't worry about the price just go. We are off again the Christmas. One tip though, do not drink too much wine in the restaurant, cheapest bottle starts at over £50.

So this is a review of a birthday gift getaway, after spending my last 3 birthday in hospital I was calling it my 21st even thought it was my 25th.
From the beginning when I was trying to sort things out the booking team were very accommodating ensuring I knew what I was getting and how the hotel was currently working with covid restrictions and also provided me with a map, current road diversions and closures and alternate routes along with a number to call incase we got lost, So the booking process was a*.
Arrival
On arrival we were first greeted by concierge who were quick to take our luggage and escort it up too checkin whilst on the door there were people that were providing sanitizer and compulsory temperature checks once entering. Walking through the beautiful reception a lady guided us on what floor we needed to go to. Once out lift we were then greeted by another member of staff who escorted us to check in. We were greeted by the most lovely lady at check in, she took our contact details explained how the hotel was operating with covid restrictions and just held a lovely conversation, with us telling us where to come for breakfast advising us on the best days for breakfast in room and best day for in there restaurant. Kelly then escorted us up to our room and showed us around the room, Kelly stayed for a short chat and then went. We then took in the beautiful sights of the room before a few minutes passed and the concierge Guy came with our bags, again this was another member of staff that was so friendly and chatty and he wished me a happy birthday for when it came.
I do think if I was to talk about all the staff that made it a special visit I’d have to write a book.
The hotel may be expensive but it is so worth it! The views, the services, the little touches like the bath running service and the staff make this hotel amazing.
I can say that this is one of the first establishments that I’ve visited and from my experience all the staff treat all of guests like VIPs
And for this reason i want to make this a place that we come for all birthdays and special occasions.
I’d also like to add that I suffer with a problem that has left me unable to speak, and every single member off staff treated me the same way they would any other guest which was so refreshing!
I can’t wait for you to reopen so I can experience some luxury again!
Thank you so much to the staff at Shangri-La for making this the best birthday to date!im already in communications with the bookings team to book a few more dates!
See you soon

My husband booked us an overnight stay as a birthday surprise and I was not disappointed.
From the moment you step into the hotel the staff make you feel welcome.
Our room was on the 42nd floor with floor to ceiling windows on three sides. The view was just incredible. You could kay on the bed and just soak in the view over London.
The room was spacious and well equipped with a separate dressing room. Spotlessly clean. Walk in shower with separate bath and L'Occitane toiletries were supplied.

We ate in the Oblix restaurant in the hotel and went for drinks in the bar at the very top of the Shard which was again excellent in every way.

Breakfast was a choice of a la carte or buffet.
We opted for the buffet which has a vast choice of pastries, fruit, cheeses and cereals along with the traditional choice of cooked English breakfast.

In all we had a fabulous stay and I would highly recommend.
It is by no means a cheap stay but as a special treat or to celebrate a special occasion it is a memorable way to celebrate.

Normally in the uk, twin beds means 2 single beds. Two people can’t sleep comfortably in one single (twin) bed.
