We checked in at 9.30am and was very impressed we could have our room straight away, we was expecting to just drop our bag, our room was very basic the bathroom was like a hostel, super king comfy bed tea coffee dressing gowns etc,

Hello, I do not know if it is too late for my answer, as you are arriving so late two choices I think, taxi or Uber or if you have a canceling option, stay at Gatwick Airport for the night, and in the early morning take the train (cheaper then the Gatwick express and only 10 minutes more) or the Gatwick express and go into London Victoria and then I suggest Uber to your hotel. You have one hotel really outside the airport on North terminal and on south terminal a couple of very near by.
