You have to go here just to see the bathroom in the castle bedroom - it just reminds me of something out of cleopatra.
It cot us £100 for the night but was excellent value for money considering the unique rooms. The views from the hotel are amazing and so scenic.
Victoria was very nice and we were never short of places to go to enjoy this wonderful area. A commendation to the owners.

Two night stay for a local wedding and were delighted by the spacious bedroom and ensuit plus the eclectic and interesting mix of art, lighting and old paraphernalia from Lowther castle. Excellent breakfasts, attentive and thoughtful hosts and no hint of limited room access!

Nero (my horse) and I love long distance riding and booked a two night stay at Whitbysteads to enjoy riding over Askham Fell with views over Ullswater & High Street (BHS Eden Valley Loop 1) and another through Lowther Park (Eden Valley Loop 2). The rides were fabulous; mainly off road riding, across the open fells with lots of opportunities to canter. The roads were extremely quiet and most had grass verges which would make the rides ideal for barefoot horses too.
I stayed in the 'blue room'. The bed was incredibly comfortable and I had a great nights sleep; the bath in the shared bathroom was just what I needed after a full day's riding - it was a true full length bath that I could stretch out, relax and sooth my tired limbs. On day one, I chose a full fry-up for breakfast which was delicious whereas on day two I had my perfect start to the day; homemade granola and yoghurt with fresh berry salad and fresh coffee.
Nero enjoyed his stay at Whitbysteads as much as I did. I had the opportunity of using one of the three stables but I chose to turn him out - the six acre paddock next in front of the house is well fenced and had lots of lush grass.
When we return (hopefully next summer) I hope to undertake the same rides (and maybe a few new ones!) and to take advantage of the great location to explore the local area; visit Lowther Castle; climb one of the famous Lakeland mountains, cruise on Ullswater, maybe end my stay will a well deserved massage at Askham Hall - I would highly recommend a stay at Whitbysteads to anyone, with or without a horse!

Lovely farm house. Beautiful amazing room. Excellent tranquil location & delicious breakfast. Stayed in the really spacious Castle room suite with bathroom - see their website. BUT our delightful experience was shapely deflated as the hostess explained on the first afternoon as we returned from walking in the nearby village at 3:30pm that the B&B guests were not expected to return during the daytime as the establishment was strictly night-time bed & breakfast only. Hmmmm… I have never heard of that before & certainly never experienced this in other B&B establishments. Compared with “The Old Vicarage” in Ambleside with whom I stay with every year & they said they have never heard of anyone applying such a daily curfew rule either. Additionally:- 1 - We had paid 330 pounds for the 3 days / nights which isn’t cheap & I would certainly expect full board for that kind of money. 2 – There was no mention regarding of the daily curfew on their website, or in the room, or at the time of booking, nor when the 330 pounds in cash was collected at the beginning of our stay. 3 – The very small tv (12 inch screen) in the room which didn’t work at all. 4 – There was no wifi in the bedroom. 5 – There was no lock on the bedroom door. I love the Lake District, as one of the most beautiful places in the UK / or even the World & I always return to see them every year. But I won’t be returning to Whitbysteads Farm although we loved the room & the sweet dogs they have… The hostess & the daily curfew left us with a bad feeling about the whole place.

We stayed last weekend and had a wonderful time, the host Victoria is charming and the rooms are wonderful. A real taste of a country house with a flavour of a boutique hotel. Stylish and individual. We had requested dinner and it didn't disappoint, we enjoyed an excellent three course dinner. Lots to do close by including the Lowther Castle & Gardens and wonderful local village pubs. Easy to find just off the motorway, Whitbysteads makes for a really great short break.

We (a family of 4) had such a super stay with the completely charming Totty and Tom Lowther at their wonderful farmhouse, in the most stunning setting. Having already been introduced to their gorgeous natured dogs, Tom offered our children the chance to feed the lambs. Our 10 year old daughter exclaimed ‘This is heaven!!’.
Totty and Tom went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, had everything we needed and were incredibly informed and helpful recommending great places to visit locally.
Breakfast was delicious - fresh bacon, eggs, granola fruit and more!
I have saved the best until last - the house is absolutely wonderful. Totty has an exceptional and unique eye for Interiors and Art so the grown ups too were in heaven! The rooms (especially love the bathroom!) are gorgeous, clean, with fresh garden flowers. Completely recommend, we would love to come back! ❤️

Just come home from two nights at this fab B&B. The location is second to none if you take your horse with you - straight onto the fell and miles of off-road riding. We had a lovely twin room and the horses had a fab grassy field. The hosts couldn't do enough for you and the lovely home cooked breakfast certainly set you up for a long day in the saddle.

Tom and Totty Lowther are the MOST gracious and accommodating hosts. Their house is splendid and elegant yet FAR from stuffy or pretentious. The grounds -- indeed the entire countryside -- are tranquil and offer some beautifully dramatic scenery. Castles, mountains, and the moors offer a dramatic setting for the cast of characters played by fell ponies, foxes, and the ubiquitous sheep. Our hosts' congeniality and generosity made a pleasant stay into a slew of fond lifetime memories!

I stayed here with my husband for two nights in August 2012. He booked it as a wonderful surprise after seeing it in an article in The Independant on the top 50 B & B's.
The house is an eclectic mix of farmhouse and stately home twist. This is a wonderful place, totally different to any other B&B we've stayed in. We booked to stay in the Castle room which in itself feels decedant and luxurious but when you combine it with the bathroom it is just amazing.
In a room as large as the bedroom itself stands a superb cast iron clawed bath. The white wooden floor is covered in sheepskin rugs, while the walls are adorned with lovely black and white wallpaper.
If you want quirky luxury then this is the place for you. The mornings started with a great fried breakfast. Everything was cooked to perfection, fresh and local.
Having stayed in many B & B's in the UK we have honestly never been anywhere as special as this. We are hoping to return at new year to enjoy the countryside in a different season.

"if the main Castle room is free - ask for this as it has a huge bathroom and the decor is amazing, the other rooms are also lovely though. Due to the house location, its a very tranquil place."
