We had booked a room with dinner bed and breakfast in the main hotel for two nights as we had long days planned and couldn’t be bothered heading out in the evenings. However on our first night there was a function that overlapped into the main bar area. As a consequence the hotel team moved us to one of their bungalows to avoid us being disturbed by the event. A considerate thing to do, which exemplified the friendliness and welcome we received from the team.

Our bungalow was spotless and comfortable. Dinner each night came from a small menu, with helpings of the excellently cooked food making us too full to consider three courses! The small wine list also shows some decent realistically priced options and the bar is well stocked with ales, lagers etc. Breakfast offers a small buffet and some choices from the hot freshly cooked section which turned up promptly and tasted delicious, as with dinner good sized helpings!

We enjoyed our stay and if ever back in the area wouldn’t hesitate to rebook.

Visited this beautiful hotel for their special Christmas lunch, with friends. The meal was superb with a decent choice of starters, main courses and sweets allowing for a traditional meal or something a little different. One of our party is gluten free and was very well catered for with no fuss. We ate in a small room that was tastefully decorated and warmed by an open fire. Service was prompt and friendly. At £30 a head, including coffee and mince pies in the lounge, the meal was superb value.

A beautiful building situated in a picturesque location, this hotel provided the perfect escape for our young family. Our family room was well sized, with everything we needed to accommodate our two small children (2 year old and a 10 month old). Our favourite thing about our stay was the hotel staff. We had read reviews prior to our arrival that the staff were excellent, and we couldn't agree more! Every member of staff we interacted with was warm, welcoming and kind. They went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed and also made effort to positively interact with our daughter at mealtimes. The food was excellent, portion sizes were great too!

4 couples, 4 big anniversaries, 140 years of marriage between us. I contacted Roundthorn as some friends had stayed there and gave it good reviews. I had quite a bit of contact with the hotel before our stay. Without exception everyone I spoke to were very helpful. All the staff during our stay were very efficient and friendly. Breakfast was very good, a good selection of dishes cooked to order and a small buffet section as well.
We ate both nights in the restaurant and the food was good. I chose very well, some others maybe felt they could have chosen better but there were no complaints. The hotel very kindly put us in our own dining room on one night so that we could celebrate without worrying about other guests, not that we were particularly crazy!
1 couple stayed in the self catering accommodation and enjoyed that. The rest of us stayed in our hotel. We all had rooms at the front which enjoy fabulous views. Note: only 1 of these bedrooms has a bath so if that's important definitely check. Our bathroom had a lovely big walk in shower and 2 wash basins. The room and bed was very comfortable and we slept well, which isn't always the case when we go away.

The hotel is well placed to get into Penrith without being in the town. It's a 20 minute ish journey to Ullswater. All in all it was a brilliant stay and we all enjoyed it. I hope we have the chance to return at some point.

We have just celebrated our wedding at the Roundthorn last week, and we could not have made a better decision making this choice as our wedding venue.
Lovely country style location with amazing views over the fells (Blencathra could be seen not in the far distance), a great selection of food and beverages at exceptionally competitive prices, staff could not be more helpful and attentive to all our needs, we could really not wish for more for our most special day.
Thank you again Roundthorn for being so friendly and professional.

Where do I start, a lovely very impressive building with friendly warm welcoming staff.

We stayed for my partners 50th, we were treated to the upgraded apartments and WOW they are stunning , clean and very modern.

We had two lovely large bedrooms both with en-suite, a warm living room with kitchen and dinning areas on onsite parking.

It’s so quite at night it’s beautiful….. woke up in the morning to sheep in the field and spectacular views.
We enjoyed a very delicious waited on breakfast where the menu was catering for all.

The town is only 5 minutes in a car down the road or a taxi, will advise if getting a taxi book in advance we were waiting over an hour when coming back from town.

I would definitely recommend a stay not going to upload pictures because I think it would spoil the wow off the experience… we will be returning:)

Just back from a fantastic stay at the Roundthorn country house hotel. Room was spacious and comfortable with lovey views of the surrounding countryside. Staff friendly and helpful. Hotel only has 10 rooms which is great and service and experience had felt very personable.

Food on offer was great! Limited menu but this was an advantage as food served was fresh and tasty and reasonably priced.

Good breakfast selection available too!

Only (minor) feedback is rooms in the hotel could be done with a update/refresh as felt a bit dated - perhaps this is in keeping with the building which was cosy and had character.

Breakfast had to be pre-ordered - which we didn’t mind, though planning what you want to eat next morning can be tricky and don’t know if possible to change your mind?!?

Stayed here for one night, due to hubby birthday. Easy to find and a very lovely, Georgian building, full of character. Stayed in front bedroom as a superior room, but TBH we arrived in the dark and as the hotel is in the middle of no where, it wouldn't of mattered what room you stayed in as you would still have experienced a view in the morning.

Dinner menu was limited so a little bit nervous, but wow, it was wonderful. Very well presented and posh looking. We only had a main, thank goodness, as portions generous. The only small complaint I would say, was that you have to pay extra for veg, which I do not agree with. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Plus the ambiance lovely, with the fire burning.

Had a couple of drinks in the bar and enjoyed looking around.

I asked for extra pillows and a blanket for the room, as I thought a little cold, but this was no problem to staff and it does say to ask if you require them.

Breakfast was just as lovely, and sausages really yummy. My hubby said he thought his was only warm, but i never thought this.

Did feel a little pressurised to leave earlier than stated, as you could hear the cleaners very clearly in hall and other rooms. Plus the cleaner opened our door and stepped in, without realising we were in there still. She did apologise though.

I would love to stay again, but at Christmas. Would love to see the decor and the Christmas trees.

We have recently been to a event at the roundthorn hotel and everything was fab, you couldn’t fault them. the food was amazing and the staff were so friendly, we will definitely be going back ☺️

Food was very quick to be served considering there was a lot of hungry people waiting for their food.

I would highly recommend this place 😋

We found Roundthorn Country House after doing a google map search of things to do in Penrith.

The venue was easy to find with spectacular views

We were seated immediately, in a lovely quiet room, with two other couples and asked what we wanted to drink instantly, as well as any dietary requirements.

Tea for two, which came within minutes.

This followed only a few minutes later by a lovely afternoon tea platter, served on a very unique stand.

Beautiful savioury and sweet selection, far too much to have in one sitting, and so we were offered a refil on our tea first which we took advantage of and a takeaway cake box for any remainders, all of which was so quickly done, very attentive and very very organised

Thank you to all the staff who served us that day, it was a very nice treat in a very grand setting.

I am so sorry I just saw this question. It is not in the countryside but if you are not local you will not know the quick way to the station. Taxis are always at the station and it won't be expensive
