Maybe bit old and smelly, but decent enough for this price. The dorms are single gender only. Very friendly staff. Good food, even for vegetarians: we had a vegetarian 'English' breakfast :) The location is perfect: through the windows you only see green, but it's just a 2 min walk to the centre of Grasmere.

We were lucky enough to find a vacancy on our birthday weekend in Jan. We planned to eat out but the a couple of places we fancied were closed and the YHA restaurant menu caught our eye. Good decision to eat in, while we couldn't claim it to be a romantic meal for 2 the choice was excellent, my veggie...

We've just returned from our first youth hostel trip with two young children - having not been to a youth hostel for 20 odd years, I was a bit apprehensive - but have returned a complete convert! The room (and whole hostel) was immaculately clean, warm and cosy - very comfortable bunk beds and plenty of hot water in the...

We really should have complained at the time but had an attack of being english! Our room absolutely stank of damp (number 11) and was stone cold on arrival. When I asked about the heat, it was immediately switched on (turned off while room not in use....does that cause the smell?) but surely they knew they were going to let...

We stayed for 3 nights in early February, and would definitely return. We benefitted not only from the hostel being fairly empty but also from the fantastic winter offer of a glass of wine thrown in with the already great value dinner menu. What impressed me most was the quality of the food - tasty, warming and well presented. Perfect...

I stayed for one night, the hostel is conveniently placed in Grasmere about 2 minutes from the shops and pubs, it does provide food but I chose to eat out. The rooms were clean, well maintained and warm. The lounge was lovely and inviting with a fire going it was not long before my clothes had dried out from the...

Me and my wife had a pleasant stay at YHA Grasmere (Butharlyp Howe) over the X-Mas period. Staff members were helpful and kind. X-Mas meal served was tasty. Because of the price of the rooms we were not expecting anything special, but still were surprised that for such a small amount of money, we can get a decent place to...
