But in COVID situation the linen removed from another bedroom was left on the landing near our room overnight. Just spoiled slightly what was otherwise a perfect stay and raised a question about quality checks. Room was lovely, breakfast choice and quality good and staff very welcoming and friendly. We would go back when it’s possible. Felt sympathy for this and other businesses facing another lockdown as we left.

We have stayed twice now at this lovely hotel. The first time in the hotel itself and the second in the Shepherd's hut. Having never stayed in a Shepherd's hut before I had no idea what to expect. My first impression was that it is breathtaking. High quality furnishings, very comfortable and very warm. The large sliding door and windows face the river, which is very close and it is so beautiful. The large porthole window faces the bed and is such a lovely touch. Descending a few steps into the bathroom, which spans the width of the hut brings another surprise; spacious and also beautiful it is luscious and warm, with a free standing and very large bath. There is no TV or wardrobe space, which maybe should be included in the description but it was not a problem to us. The private space by the river with seating and a fire pit is just perfect and I actually spent a whole day there. You don't get this benefit by staying in a room but there is riverside access and a bench next to the hut for any other guests. I feel that the website pictures definitely don't do the hut justice and can only highly recommend it. The evening we had around the fire pit was the icing on the cake, we'll definitely be staying in the future, it was worth every penny. Of course you have the added benefit of access to the hotel itself for breakfast, the beautiful conservatory and the lounge area. I found the staff unusually personable, I'm sure they would do anything to make your stay comfortable as they did ours. It's our new 'go to' place in our favourite getaway village. We also stayed in room 8, which I also loved. Beautiful room and furnishings and a gorgeous bathroom too. It looks out onto the river and you can go out onto the balcony (fire escape) where there are chairs if you happen to enjoy nice weather or even if it is raining.

A blissfully comfortable, quiet night’s sleep in a beautifully decorated bedroom with a fab en-suite bathroom. The hotel is perfectly located for exploring the village of Grasmere and the surrounding awe-inspiring countryside. Dan managed to accommodate our two not-so-small teenage children in our room and after a day of walking in the beautiful Lake District and eating plenty of delicious local treats, we all surprised ourselves by managing two whole nights sleep in each other’s company. With an alpine feel, there is a brilliant boot room in the basement. Our locally ordered evening meal was enjoyed in the restaurant with drinks (cocktails and expertly-sourced delicious wine) from the bar. Breakfast in the stylish breakfast room was absolutely delicious with a huge list of possible menu items to try. From a generous Morris’s Full Cumberland Breakfast to French Toast and Cumberland Bacon to Eggs Benedict, every taste was catered for. We can’t wait to return.

We stayed here for a 3 night break in a Stargazer room which was very comfortable, lovely bathroom with great shower. Hotel well located, staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good - except for one niggle - we found out on leaving there is a charge (£2.50) for any additional coffee or pot of tea at breakfast. We have stayed in cheaper and more expensive hotels and have never been charged for an extra pot of tea/ coffee as part of breakfast - the charge was not indicated on the breakfast menu and should have been. hence a 4 star rating rather than 5.

We (my wife, our dog and I) stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed both the hotel and Grasmere. The hotel wasn't serving meals other than an excellent breakfast, probably because of Covid, but there are excellent alternatives in near walking distance. The room was more than adequate, and the ambience is very attractive. The only serious drawback is the scarcity of parking, but there is a public car park behind the hotel which is free overnight. We wish the hotel had brochures of local attractions etc..
