Very comfortable with good service. Just Across from St Albans cathedral and easy walking distance to downtown St Albans. Carpark and beer garden in the back but weather too bad when I was there to use

Good value, clean basic accomodation close to St. Albans city centre. On a quiet and picturesque street a stone's throw from the Abbey and a five minute walk into town yet peaceful at night. Excellent breakfast, cooked to order. Very quirky with uneven floors and crooked old beams, stairs could be difficult for the less mobile. Not all the rooms...

Fantastic Sunday lunch. Lamb shank is the best. Roast potatoes and parsnips. Plus sweet potato. Lots of vegetables. My girlfriend and I have been coming back here repeatedly. In the winter a great fire as well. Staff super friendly and helpful. Large range of beers and wines. Enough said. 'Fantastic'.

My wife and I stayed for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The landlord, his wife and staff were very friendly and courteous as were the local residents as we enjoyed a quiz night in their company. Excellent breakfasts and evening meals(the pies and real ales are especially good) in a charming and spotlessly clean very old inn. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Last night we had supper at the Lower Red Lion. Salt and Pepper Squid was great, as was the mushroom soup. Then we had the excellent pies - which were full of flavour with generous helpings of fresh mash and peas. All washed down with a good - sensibly priced - bottle of red wine.

This is a quirky pub in a very old building. We stayed for two nights and didn't eat dinner in the pub, but breakfast was good. The bed was comfy, but the bathroom wasn't well finished and our tea and coffee cups in the room were quite dirty. However we had a nice view into the street from the room...

I stay at the Lower Red lion most weeks for a night whilst I am in St.Albans on business. It’s a very welcoming pub – with a great landlord, David, and bar staff, especially Tacha. This is the opposite of the anonymous, characterless modern hotels that most business trips entail – it’s friendly, has great beer (usually 5-6 real ales)...

The building is amazing: sloping floors, odd steps and wooden beams etc. It was like living in a historical film set. The stairs might be difficult for people who are unsteady walking but I thought they were rather fun, holding onto the bannister and building timbers. We had en-suit facilities which were clean and perfectly adequate - I believe only...

A delightful, friendly pub/hotel ideally positioned by the Cathedral and just a short walk from the town centre. The landlord and staff were extremely attentive and friendly. Our room was simple, but very comfortable. We appreciated the complementary biscuits and tea and especially the coffee cafetiere. The local beer was excellent as was the meal, we had the chef's specials,...

“I have looked in room 4 and room 3 as we had family staying in these rooms but in my opinion room 2, which was ours was the best. All were nice and in equal cleanliness and quality but room 2 had its own quaint walk in cupboard.”
