Good position. Clean and quaint old cottage. Thought the road would be noisy at night but had a good nights sleep. Only continental breakfast but OK for us. Certainly better than staying in London as St Albans has a lot to offer and there were some good pubs only minutes away.

We were in St Albans for my husband to play in a golf match. We stayed for three nights and this is the first time we have stayed in a B&B as we have always stayed in hotels before . Fern Cottage is so homely and Dorothea is so charming and made us feel very welcome. Our room and ensuite...

I arrived later than I said but there was no fuss I was shown to my room by the charming Dorothea. I found the room to be charming and well equipped with a selection or teas and coffees and a kettle, and in the wardrobe a powerful hairdrier, rollers and brush, ironing board and steam iron. The only thing it...

Excellent Bed and breakfast. Very friendly and welcoming owner. Nice comfortable, clean rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Good continental breakfast with plenty of choice. I will stay again in the future.

We were in St Albans for my daughters birthday, she gave us a short list to choose from and we booked into Fern Cottage. It looked good on the outside and even better on the inside. Dorothea made us welcome and showed us to our room, not large, the rooms are a similar size to mine at home. Great location,...

Love staying at Fern Cottage, this is our third time of staying a week or more. Continental breakfast is great, rooms are comfortable, 10 minute walk to railway station. But most of all, Dorothea will help one out with any needs or requests. And finally Basil (the dog) makes the day.

Okay, you should not expect ballrooms. What you find are small rooms in a lovely cottage where everything seems to be done and arranged with love. We had a very nice room, a very good bed and a really good breakfast, even though it was the continental. This is a clever alternative to expensive London Hotels. I am quite sure...

Used to live in St.Albans but had no idea where to stay. So glad I chose Fern Cottage. Considering my inability to check in when I agreed, Dorothea made me feel so welcome. The room was spacious, lovely and had everything I could've wanted. The bed was comfy and I slept like a log. Breakfast was excellent. Glad I opted...

That's Basil the dog, co-owner of Fern Cottage. who together with mine hostess Dorothea made our recent 2-night stay in this delightfully quirky early Victorian cottage a pleasure. Good room and excellent breakfasts. Nothing negative to say.

Other reviews? How very odd! The names seem to match up and I recognize the reference to a resident dog but he didn't attack anyone during our stay and at 13 years old seemed indifferent to anything other than being patted. However back to the review, our room was clean and comfortable and we had the good fortune to be...

“If you prefer cooked breakfast, then don't order the breakfast, but go into town for breakfast or ask Dorothea if she will do one for you. I am not sure if she does this. If you need to sleep during the day ask for a room to the rear of the property as Old London Road can be noisy during the day, but its completely quiet after dark and I had no trouble sleeping whatsoever. Don't forget to ask for off street parking if this is something you want as it's limited.”

“A difficult question really, we've stayed in two rooms and found them to be equally good. Best to ask Dorothea for advice if you want something in particular. She offered to fill our water flask without being asked and we appreciate that sort of friendly help.”
