Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was staying at the Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel for a conference. It was worth taking some time to look around Winchester as it is a excellent location with a fascinating history. The good things at the hotel were the morning breakfast (cereals, continental, and cooked) , polite staff, the central location and a lovely view of the cathedral from the window. I recommend a visit to the cathedral as it must be one of the most wonderful historical buildings in the whole of the UK. However, the sink in my en suite bathroom was partly blocked, there was a slight smell of body odour in the room and there were a few dim lamps but no main lighting in the room. There was no central heating, just a small heater that I was advised to use to keep the room warm. Also, beware - you have to pay for parking at the hotel if you drive. It is £15 for every 24 hours. Overall, though the central location is a good thing, I was expecting more for my money. If the room had more modern features then it would justify the price for the four star rating. Winchester is a wonderful place though.

Such a shame that this hotel is really run down and actually a bit of a dump. It has the most stunning location overlooking the cathedral but is let down by the hard product which is seriously overdue a closing of the doors for a multi million pound refit. The carpets in the communal areas are dated and worn. The room was okay and in fairness I had a comfortable night’s sleep but it was like staying at your grandma’s in terms of fixtures and furnishings, and that’s probably an insult to your grandma. The biggest let down was the bathroom which was actually not clean. I was only staying the night and spent most of my time out in Winchester. But it’s highly unlikely I will return to this hotel. I found myself looking out the window and wishing I’d booked the travelodge over the road that I stayed in the weekend before. Mercure get a grip and get some investment in this place!!!

Excellent experience and helped by the receptionists who swiftly dealt with booking in and any queries I had. We had an upgraded room which looked out to the Cathedral and was just excellent for our stay. The welcome plate and card was just the perfect touch. The dining experience was not quite what we expected and we were confined to the bar as the Dining area was occupied with functions on two of the nights. The menu was limited but the food was still very hot and tasty and very welcome after a day in Winchester. The location of the Hotel is perfect being only a hundred yards from the High Street. Parking was plentiful but costly and still was cheaper than public rates. We enjoyed the whole experience and will be returning again soon.

Just disappointed! Location and view - the best in Winchester Everything else - poor. The room is not clean, it’s cold, no lights only lamps, no plugs next to the bed, tired furniture, stained carpets, cracked bathroom tiles, tv remote is next to the bed but not properly viewable from the bed, knackered sofa. I would it mind so much if it was not as expensive, certainly not value for money

Excellent views over the cathedral, room was very spacious, staff friendly and accommodating - they let us leave our backpack with them before checking in and after checking out. Location is very good for downtown nightlife. Only downside - the fixings and fittings could use some upgrading. Oh and the window sill was super wide - great for sparkling wine, cheese and crackers and board games!

A late Valentines break to Winchester. A beautiful city with the hotel in the perfect location to explore. We received a warm welcome, the room was big, clean, warm and we were given a lovely welcome gift. Breakfast with a view of the cathedral set us up for the day of exploring. We will be back.

The room was dirty, food crumbs in chair upholstery, dirty fridge not even switched on. Stained carpet and chairs. Bathroom, hole in bath panel edges filthy old fittings, grouting needed re-doing. This is not recommended a place to stay for the solo traveller.

Curtains torn, hole in bath panel, dirty taps, lack of basic house cleaning, food sent back when I ate in the restaurant, told I was too early for breakfast even though it was after 6.30, paid for parking and then was told that because the car park was full to park in council car park. Staff did their best when some of the issues were raised

Had a night here with a friend for a Mums night off, I want to credit the lovely lady on the reception desk Magdalena I think was her name, she was so kind and welcoming, friendly and professional, there was a fault in our room and she had us in another room in minutes which turned up to be an upgrade at no extra cost. We saw her a few times as we were in and out and she welcomed us with a friendly acknowledgment every time.
