We stayed for a couple of nights while visiting our son at the University. It’s a great little hotel and we will definitely come back when we are in Exeter next. The hotel is in an exquisite Georgian building in the middle of Southernhay which is a delightful and quiet area right in the centre of the city and only 5 mins walk from most shops and restaurants. The public rooms are spacious and rather quirkily furnished but very pleasant. The bar area is really nicely kitted out and is a great place to relax (fantastic martinis btw). Our room was on the first floor and very spacious with a very comfortable bed - shower and loo in the room in a slightly incongruous built in unit but everything worked very well. We didn’t eat in the evening but the breakfasts (included in our deal) were really good. Most of all the staff were unfailingly friendly and polite and genuinely seemed to enjoy working there.

Hi Philip, thanks for this fine review. It’s so nice to welcome Uni parents here because it gives us a chance to build a relationship with you over the three (or four) years. I’ll pass your particular comments re Martini and breakfast to Paulie (bar) and Andy (kitchen); they’ll be chuffed. As you kindly note, we do all have a genuine passion for hospitality and providing the best service we can. We look forward to welcoming you back.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay here in October. Our plans for a sunshine holiday were cancelled and so we wanted a bit of luxury when we didn’t have to think of anything and just relax. The rooms are stunning, the luxury room’s bath was deeper than deep! The shower was fantastic- we’ve never been so clean! The food was good, I would say the steak was excellent and the squid some of the best I’ve had with the rest of the meal being good. Lots of choice at breakfast, I’d recommend the mushrooms with eggs and bacon crumb. Our teenage daughters stayed with us and the hotel was very accommodating to them too. The location is spot on and all the sightseeing and shops in Exeter are in walking distance. Thank you Southernhay House Hotel!

It was our pleasure and we’re so pleased you chose us, and Exeter, for a short break away from the madness. We don’t quite have the appeal of Tenerife, but we’re very much here for anyone looking for a reality check and relaxation. Your kind comments are appreciated by all of us and it’s especially good for our chefs to have specific feedback.

Amidst the madness of Covid my partner and I decided to take a risk and book a last minute, overnight stay away for his birthday. These guys were all amazing and couldn’t fault a single thing! The weather was foul and we were allowed to check in early because of it and we were given Prosecco in our room for his 25th. The room was beautiful and perfectly presented. The hotel is less than a 5 minute walk to the centre of Exeter and their cocktails were awesome!

It’s lovely to hear from you Georgia and thank you so much for posting this review. It was truly our pleasure to welcome you both here for a well-deserved mini-break and a special celebration. He’s a lucky guy to have such a thoughtful (and spontaneous) partner. We’re hoping this review will reassure anyone looking for a last-minute sanctuary from the current madness! And we hope to welcome you back for birthdays we’ll into the future.

Stayed here a couple of weekends ago. The hotel and room were lovely and in a fantastic location, highly recommend getting the breakfast as the choices were fab! I have a nut and gluten allergy and the staff were really knowledgeable and had gluten free bread, granola etc which was a lovely surprise. My partner had preordered some champagne as he had proposed the day we arrived. This was brought up as soon as we got to the room which was lovely. I was surprised however that the staff didn’t say anything (no congratulations) when bringing this which didn’t feel very personable, but I also understand with covid they’ll be trying to limit interactions! The bar is really nice and did a great Negroni! Highly recommend this hotel and would definitely look to rebook if I’m visiting Exeter again!

Big congratulations; it’s so great to have a romantic story at this time! We’re all delighted that you had a great stay and thank you so much for taking the time to post this lovely review. Allergies - what allergies? Dietary requirements are quite usual and we’re ready to adapt as all of our food is made just for you. We wouldn’t say anything on bringing champs to your room - don’t want to jinx the proposal......until we know the answer! Now we do.....and I hope we’ll see you both back in the future to relive this unusual and special 2020 moment.
