Just retuurned from a 5 day break with Shearings stayed at the Ship and Castle Hotel. The hotel is in need of a make over and upgrade, the colour scheme was very dowdy the room needed brighting up with a lick of paint. Our superior room which cost extra was not very superior. No proper bathroom shelves, couldnt get the...

Travelled on a shearings 5 day break, we paid an extra £156 for a Superior room but there wasn't anything superior about this room. I contacted the hotel the week before to ask if it was possible to have a room with a balcony as my wife has just had a year long battle with cancer and might not be...

All service staff seem to be east european and were extremely efficient and obliging .However several waiters were poor English speakers which caused occasional slight difficulty in the dining area. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the food of a good standard, but there was not much in the way of entertainment. Our room was too small and dark ,plus icy cold ,...

Just returned from a mid-week break at The Ship and Castle in lovely St Mawes. We traveled with Shearings and had a wonderful stay. Even the weather was kind to us. The hotel is a Coast and Country but is a little tired looking. However it is very clean and the staff in the main were very nice, although we...

Nice location, friendly staff..... however it's a bit run down and the room is very small.....too small! No phone reception (can't do much about that) however there is no wifi in the rooms and in this day and age is frustrating to say the least when you'd like to get on the internet. Oh well not sure I'd stay again...

Arrived Monday 5th May, found the location of the hotel stunning, the service we received from start to finish was excellent. Hotel manager could lighten up a little, saying that the staff were so friendly and helpful. We found the food particularly good, vegetables cooked very lightly and not to a mash well done. Would definitely go again.

Pleasant staff, good hot breakfast, clean room. Everything worked, no real problems. Just a few buts... No wifi in my room, a must these days. My stay was cheap, but my room could have done with a lick of paint, need new curtains, the doors slam badly, just need a bit of tlc, my taps need new washers as had...

Rude, obnoxious bar staff; unmanned reception; dark, dark room; no hot water; dismissive manager; the list could go on Apparently our room 'was refurbished last year' - it could have been refurbished yesterday, but charcoal grey paint will always make a room appear dark! According to the manager, our room wasn't 'one of the rooms that often had water issues,...

This hotel looks great in the public areas and has to have one of the best outlooks in the area. The view of the sun going down and the light playing on the harbour and hills opposite was something never to be forgotten! The food was very average - would probably rather not have half board unless on a tight...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Where the Rivers' Fal and Percuil meet to join the open sea, St Mawes boasts the perfect picture postcard retreat and at the heart of the village, right on the quay you will find The Ship and Castle Hotel. Once The Ship and Castle Inn, and a warren of small fishermen's cottages (remnants of which can still be seen at the rear of the existing building) The Ship and Castle is now a 54 bedroom hotel with all the charm and character one would expect for its location. Our bar and lounges offer the perfect location for a peaceful day in St Mawes watching the world go by, or enjoying a traditional Cornish Cream Tea. We have a selection of sea view rooms which understandably are in high demand and are well recommended to make your stay that little bit more special. ... more   less
