This place is very special. The first thing you notice is the decor. The interior is beautiful. It's cozy but very high quality. The staff are superb. Friendly, helpful and funny. Also, they were all masked and took covid very seriously. That's not been the case in a lot of places lately and I found it massively reassuring. Then the food. It's by far the best restaurant in the area. We've had lovely meals in Penzance but this is exceptional. This is way above normal restaurant standard. The broccoli starter is a a real treat and the duck was so decadent. I really didn't want our meal to end. Everything about The Old Coastguard is 5 star. You have to go.

The staff were lovely and really tried there best . As for the food . I had battered pollock and it was awful. Being a fisherman I enjoy fresh fish but this fish was stale and smelt strong . I couldn’t bring myself to eat it but we didn’t complain as the staff we’re trying there best . My wife had the jambon that was strange to have as it was just cured ham on a plate nothing with it . Mabe some crusty bread with oil :vinegar or a few olives may have accomplished the jambon . Beautiful place lovely service but for the money I would expect nice food and this wasn’t to be . Real shame .may try there restaurant in gurnards head as we live local but we won’t be rushing back to the coastguard

We had enjoyed a few coffees and brandys during the day, sitting on the patio close to the sea, screened from the breeze by a glass screen but with full views of the sea and rock pools. The staff were friendly and helpful so we decided to book for dinner. It was a late dinner because there were other bookings and the restaurant was full when we arrived but we were quickly seated and studied the menus. There wasn't a huge range but we both found something we liked as did the kids. The food was exceptional so I'm surprised at some of the other comments on this site. Portions were not huge but certainly sufficient for normal people and we only didn't order dessert because we were full, despite the tempting menu. The 2 or 3 course fixed price menus were not over priced and because we only had one course, the price was reduced accordingly without asking. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient at all times. For the fussy kids we needed to mix menus which was accommodated without fuss. We had booked to return later in the week but due to illness were unfortunately unable to and had to cancel. Even then the (different) staff i spoke to were really good about it despite cancelling with only 10 minutes notice. We will definitely be back next time we visit Mousehole. It was by checking the hotel rates that I was prompted to write this review which I only do if a venue is either very good or very bad. This one was great.

This place is a scam and has sadly been destroyed by the new owners . The food is unfulfilling and overpriced. Do not go here if you are hungry. I was served a piece of lamb smaller than a cigarette packet and summer vegetables of a piece of rocket and fourteen peas ((yes I counted them.) For this they charged over£35. The new owners rely on the Coastguards history and location claiming " We want The Coastguard to be at the centre of its local community with beer and drinks prices set for its regular customers, not the incoming tourists." THIS IS A SCAM. No locals visit, mainly because they are not welcome and are asked to leave. This so called gastopub is totally artificial and unauthentic aiming to cater for the Surrey Set whilst scamming off of the local history but treating the local community with contempt. Please be warned.

This used to be the go-to restaurant in West Cornwall but it has lost its way. The menu is unimaginative and cooking only average. The skate wing served on sloppy mashed potatoes was a particularly bad idea. The meal was not bad enough to complain about but not good enough to enjoy. There is a limit to how long restaurants can use Covid as an excuse for poor performance. The Coastguard is resting on past reputation.
