The Varsity Hotel & Spa shines with its friendly staff and top-notch service, although a few guests have encountered inconsistencies. Its prime location offers easy access to the city's heart, with many visitors enamored by the stylish atmosphere and the scenic views from the well-appointed rooms.
The cleanliness is exemplary; however, some guests find the value questionable, pointing to high costs and less impressive facilities. The hotel's amenities, including the spa and rooftop restaurant, receive applause, yet privacy and temperature in the rooms can be areas of concern for some.

Detailed Reviews
I rang this hotel just on the off chance they might have a room for the night since my previous hotel (which had very good ratings!) proved to be quite hellish and was only intending to stay one night. The receptionist I spoke to on the phone was wonderful — said I could check my bags straightaway (even though it was early in the morning) and by the time I arrived had given me a free upgrade to an utterly beautiful room. Everything about this place is perfection — especially the incredibly welcoming and professional staff. Particular credit goes to this first receptionist (I extended my stay thanks to her), the breakfast team (who were so friendly and appear to have photographic memories for how you like your tea in the morning!) and the impeccable servicing of the room (which gives you exactly what you’d want from a luxury hotel in terms of quality bedding and towelling etc.,) The spa was excellent too — loved the yoga classes and can recommend the pregnancy massages for expectant mothers. Pre-Covid, I used to write a fair bit of travel journalism and have reviewed a fair few five star resorts in my time and honestly this is up there with the best of them! Go!

Hotel's Favourite
My wife and I on a return visit to the Varsity. We booked very late to do last minute holiday shopping in Cambridge as the hotel location is excellent for this.
We had a lovely welcoming at reception, and although we were rather early, and just intend to drop our bags, we were offered our room straight away, which was really useful. As we were checking in, Claudia at the reception saw that we were returning customers, and happened to have a room upgrade available that day. We were very pleased as the only room available on the booking agent website was below what we would normally request. The guy who was concierge for our luggage was brilliant, as the bags were checked in and out twice( our mistake) but he was lovely! The rooms are very clean, tidy and well maintained. We enjoyed a drink in the bar upstairs, before heading off to meet friends. On our return we visited the cocktail bar again, which was really busy, but service was quick and atmosphere was really good. A very good night’s sleep, as usual. I seriously cannot fault this hotel, and would thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting a very central location. Thank you all, and we shall definitely see you again!👍

We have been raving about this hotel to all who will listen! Prior to us coming, a wonderful lady Ana was able to arrange a cab to meet us at the airport. They promptly answered any messages prior to our arrival. Another staff member took charge of my wet raincoat and anything we asked for was promptly answered and/or provided, - i.e, a rubber mat for the bathtub, more towels, and more... The room was impeccable, very quiet, (no noise from the street or air conditioner system) had avery comfortable bed, and had a wonderful view of the rooftops of Cambridge. We loved the location as it was a little on the edge of town so it was easy to get in and out of Cambridge for our relatives to pick us up. The restaurant had very accommodating servers and cooks, careful with any allergies, or preferences. The food was excellent and the view was amazing. The location is near the river, restaurants, shopping and colleges. One disappointment was that the nail salon did not do French nails. (I survived) We would definitely want to stay in this hotel if and when we would be back in Cambridge. Gail T.

This hotel was absolutely amazing to stay in, with many options for places to eat.
First of all when you check in, they take your car and park it so you don’t have to worry about parking. The receptionists are always very friendly and keep your bags aside if you any want to check in before your room is ready and go shopping or out for lunch. The shops around are always nice and they can store your shopping as well if you don’t want it in your room.
Going into you room is really clever, as each room has its own name. Some rooms have a shower or wet room and others have a bath. The beds are a perfect height and all of the windows have great views to the surrounding shops, colleges and houses. Bed is perfectly comfy and the right consistency (hard and soft) and the pillows are like marshmallows. Room is clean and smells nice.
Going to dinner is exciting, going to six the restaurant and the grill are both amazing and the food portions are generous and rightly priced for what you get, and the enjoyable performance of the funny staff who are always there to help. There are a range of cocktails you can try and an entire menu! As well as this there is the roof top bar with amazing views and delicious mocktails too.
Overall sleeping you couldn’t hear any noise and I personally slept really deeply and well.
The spa comes with robes slippers and a water fountain, as well as infused water. Away from refreshments and additional decorations, the facilities in the spa are relaxing and enjoyable. There’s a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and cold showers.
The staff are so polite, love staying here and will go again soon, for the third time!
Such a great experience, booked to go again in October, for the third time!

Our usual Cambridge digs were all booked up by conference-goers so I decided to treat myself and my daughter to a night at The Varsity. I know the city well but what a treat to be right there in the centre, and it would have made an even bigger difference had we been first-time visitors. We received an unexpected and v welcome upgrade - an airy, super-comfy room, spick and span with fetching botanical wallpaper and views of the rooftops. Staff were helpful without being pushy, and the rooftop bar is a boon. There's no pool, it's true, but we really enjoyed a visit to the spa (wonderfully empty first thing) and while there may not be much for kids, staff were welcoming, the robes and slippers were a big hit, and the whirlpool hot tub with river views was just what was needed ahead of a day exploring the museums. Definitely recommended!

I stayed in this hotel with my sisters and elderly mother. We wanted something special as it was a rare night away for us all but we were disappointed from the moment we got there sadly. Firstly, there is no lounge area at all - just a small lobby and then straight to your room. The rooms were ok, but with hard wooden floors so not very cosy. Our room literally looked straight across into offices so we couldn't really have the heavy curtain open and there was no net curtain etc as an alternative for some privacy. There is a kettle and some tea in the room but the kettle still had water in it from the previous occupant and we got one packet of biscuits to share! The same with all the toiletries in the room - they weren't really adequate for a twin room. It all felt like they were being tight on everything. For the price of this hotel it was just not living up to its website or expectation.
If you want a cup of tea I recommend heading into Cambridge to one of the many coffee shops. We had dinner in the Six restaurant at the hotel and the food was very good but the waiting staff were not friendly and verging on rude, the same at breakfast and be prepared to pay for an extra coffee or a hot chocolate at breakfast as apparently this is not included in the price. Also, the cheapest bottle of wine on the menu was £36 and the cheapest bottle of Rose was £56 so be prepared for that.
Finally, the Spa - personally I wouldn't bother - you have to walk out the hotel and along to the Spa, which didn't really feel like a spa as it's just a hot tub. As a hotel customer you can make use of the classes at the Spa. We went to a Yoga class but we were not asked any questions such as "had I done any Yoga before" The class was very advanced Yoga and just not what we were expecting, however there was no description and the teacher didn't give options or suggest alternative positions etc. Having practiced Yoga and Pilates for years I felt this was not a good class.
We had an ok time but all felt this hotel wasn't anything special and just wasn't worth the money.

I had high expectations of my stay at The Varsity based on both the cost and the great reviews on here, however I was distinctly underwhelmed for many reasons. First impressions of the hotel were that it was considerably more tired looking than I'd expected ( even the doors to the bedrooms gave off a tired/dated feel ) which was a surprise. My room/bathroom, on initial arrival, looked really great - very large, floor to ceiling windows, great wallpaper and a huge rolltop bath, however I soon realised that the only covering for the huge windows were incredibly heavy curtains that came off their hooks in many place as soon as you tried to pull them which was really annoying. Bearing in mind the room looked right into the windows of the student accommodation opposite, one might have thought that there would be some sort of net/privacy curtain as a 'lighter/daytime' alternative to the heavy curtains but no such luck which meant that the horribly heavy curtains had to stay closed most of the time. There was no full length mirror which was also odd in such a huge room with ample wall space and in addition to that, the USB ports were totally the opposite side of the room to the beds (where they would have been the most useful place to plug phones into) - why is this. There was, however, a huge Apple Mac computer which served no purpose whatsoever from what i can see and seemed odd when so many of the basics weren't there. It never ceases to amaze me how logical and basic things in so many hotels are not thought out and perhaps those that design them need to spend a night or 2 in them to see how they work and what is missing! I had the grand total of 4 hangers in my double wardrobe, there was no fridge and the tea/coffee offering was very poor (the dreaded UHT milk in a little foil topped plastic container), cheap looking biscuits etc which is just not good enough for £340 for the night. Breakfast was very disappointing - again, the restaurant looked very tired with very dirty floors and tables that were badly marked and really needed replacing. The buffet offering was just left on the bar and consisted of the saddest looking fruit salad I've seen since the 1980s, some basic cereals, a bowl of some horrible syrupy 'forest fruits' plus yoghurts and pastries etc. Generally pretty badly presented and unappealing. The range of cooked options available was very good but in our group, none of the eggs were right, either totally undercooked or rock hard. We didn't eat here in the evening so I can't comment on any other meal. All in all, a big disappointment, particularly as I was the organiser of the work function that we'd booked The Varsity for so I felt responsible for having spent a lot of money for what was a very disappointing experience.

This hotel did what we needed to, but did not meet the expectations set by its price point.
Positives:
Breakfast quality at Six was excellent
Room service quality and promptness are very good
Great Central location
Valet parking is useful as there are minimal other parking options
Negatives:
The heating in our room (410) did not work. We blasted it, and even at full heat and power, there was no hot air coming out.
The shower leaked significantly so much so that we had to put towels all over the floor.
The fire alarm went off unexpectedly twice during our 5 night stay, this was incredibly loud (as a fire alarm should be) but it was not a test and no explanation was given why it went off.
The jacuzzi in the spa was not working for the duration of our stay.
Our additional services, including breakfasts, were overcharged, so we had to get a partial refund after paying.
Overall:
If you are after a hotel purely for its location, then this is a good one, but bear in mind that there are no bells and whistles beyond that.

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night having travelled on the park and ride which was so easy . We arrived at 10am to drop off our bags and to our delight our room was available and we had even been upgraded . The reception staff throughout our stay were courteous and professional. We went to have a look at the restaurant which had amazing views but cannot comment on the food as we did not eat here . We thought £19.50 for a breakfast was expensive . The room had a tray with tea of all types and coffee and biscuits and another with wine , crisps and sweets to purchase . The bathroom had a heated floor and Elemis products . A computer , a tv and a tablet to book room service and spa treatments next door at The Glassworks Gym . We used the spa next door the staff were friendly and we had towels, robe and slippers given to us on arrival . It’s is a small spa with a jacuzzi steam room and sauna , we noticed on our visit that there was quite a “drainy” smell .
Checkout was again seem less with the option to leave your bags whilst you enjoyed the sites of Cambridge. A lovey hotel well situated .
For Information we ate at The Mitre a pub just along from the hotel with amazing pies and service .

We had a wonderful stay at the Varsity. I booked the hotel because of its very central location and because it is one of the few hotels that offer baths. We were given the most lovely room with a contemporary four poster, almost wall to wall french windows and a huge bathroom with a stand alone bath. Everything was tasteful, comfortable and luxurious . The free spa was also an amazing experience . beautifully tiled with somewhat of the feel of a turkish hammam, the sunken hot tub faces the Cam river through a gorgeous semi circular window.
I would one hundred per cent recommend the Varsity as a great place to stay in Cambridge .

Not sure as I don't bring a car for that reason. Sorry I can't help.
You can pull up at the hotel and they park it for you and it cost about 25 per day. It’s very efficient.
If you are reasonably fit the stairs will not be a problem for you.
There’s one in the room
