Most guests at Clayton Hotel Cambridge commend its prime location, just a stone's throw from key transport links, shopping centers, and the heart of the city. The hotel's rooms are celebrated for their cleanliness and contemporary flair, with an overall stylish ambiance that adds to the tranquil atmosphere.
While the array of amenities, including a hearty breakfast and available bicycles, is generally appreciated, some visitors have noted additional charges for coffee and missing items like body lotion. Although service is typically highlighted as friendly and professional, a few guests have pointed out occasional service lapses.

My boyfriend and I had a good time staying at this hotel. We were only here for a night and the service was great from check in to check out. The staff allowed us to check-in early at noon. Upon entry into our room, everything was clean and cold (the way I like it). What was odd, though, was the shower. There was no curtain or door to it so whenever the shower was on and in use, water got almost everywhere, which was inconvenient. Also, while a shower cap, toothbrush, hand soap, shampoo, body wash, and conditioner were included as bathroom amenities, there was no body lotion, which is unusual. Additionally, the rooms were not soundproof, so you can hear whatever is going on in the hallway and people in the hallway can hear anything that’s going on in your room, which was concerning. Aside from that, room experience was very comfortable! Dinner at the co-located restaurant (The Tamburlaine) was amazing! Huge thank yous to Antoine and the kitchen staff for being excellent to us!!! Room service breakfast was decent. The only issues were being served cold toast and out-of-date fruits (they were very sour and left a bad feeling in my stomach). Overall, I would probably stay here again. It’s a convenient 5 minutes away from the Cambridge train station.

Dear RyanBac99. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay with us. We appreciate your positive comments regarding our service, cleanliness, and the convenience of our location. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the lack of a shower curtain or door in your room, the large walk-in shower and bathroom are designed specifically for our hotel and do not have a curtain but instead a large glass modern screen to fit in with the bathroom design with a thick cotton shower mat. Depending on the type of room, not all will have lotion provided as standard but our reception team are on hand 24/7 if you require any assistance or additional amenities and they are always able to help in any way that they can. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your dining experience at The Tamburlaine Restaurant, we are very proud of our chef team and the restaurant itself. We value your positive feedback about Antoine and the kitchen staff and this has been shared with them directly. With regards to the breakfast items, I can reassure you that the fruits were fresh prepared as they are every day at the hotel, any left over fruits following breakfast service are sold on the "Too Good To Go" app to reduce our food wastage impact on the environment. Thank you again for your review. We truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Sincerely,

I rarely give 5 star reviews after a one night stay, but have to make an exception in the case of this hotel.
I was in Cambridgeshire for a concert and needed a hotel with easy access to the city centre and preferably near the station as I was arriving by train, the Clayton met those requirements being a stone’s throw from the station and a gentle walk of about a mile into the city centre.
The receptionist who greeted us was very cheerful and welcoming, a feature of all the staff we met during our short stay. My room was large and very comfortable with a king size bed. The bathroom had a large wet room style walk in shower (I understand baths are only available in 2 suites) and was similarly large with plenty of room and appropriate sized towels rails, often missing in some hotels.
Breakfast was excellent, my friend was particularly impressed by the croissants which were fresh, moist and a bit crispy as they should be - they wouldn’t have been out of place in a Parisian hotel. The full English spread was being regularly topped up with freshly cooked items, all in all one of the best breakfasts I’ve had in a hotel in quite a while. Even the coffee machine produced good coffee.
We’ve been visiting Cambridge for around 15 years since our son went to university there, and still visit regularly as he lives on the outskirts with his family, the Clayton is likely to see me again when we next visit.

Let’s start with the good bits; foyer and bedrooms are smart, clean and modern. Beautiful bathroom, lovely shower, huge comfortable bed. Good breakfast. The down-side; on arrival we wanted drinks in the bar, it was not tidy, cusions strewn over the sofas, empty glasses ect. I had to ask the staff member who eventually came if it was open. After our day/night out we came back to the hotel for drinks. We are told the bar closed at 10 but we could order drinks in the library or have room service. We chose a table and removed the rubbish and empty glasses on it and eventually two mardy-looking girls arrived to take our order. We were told to keep our voices down as there were bedrooms on the same floor. We then chose to move into a corner furthest away from the bedroom corridor, again removing glasses and rubbish from the table. When we left the library after our drinks the staff were being very noisy in the staff room next to the bedroom corridor. Our round of four drinks (three spirts with mixers one glass of wine) came to £89. At breakfast the following morning there were no tables set, the room was 1/3rd full and all the other tables were full of dirty pots. This is supposed to be a luxury hotel, and in some respects they deliver. But for heavens sake tidy up, be a bit more friendly, and review your drinks prices as this does not reflect the service provided.

We booked 3 nights for a birthday weekend through Voyage Prive, we were looking forward to the hotel because of the good reviews, during check in the receptionist asked if the booking was for 2 people which obviously it was, she said they had the reservation for 1 person which could mean breakfast may not be covered, my paperwork clearly noted it was for 2 people so so this was clarified (not the best start) We were pleased with our spacious room and large bed however on closer inspection in the bathroom we noticed both large dispensers for hand soap and shower gel were completely empty, this was unacceptable because of their size, they must have been running low for some time, thankfully we had brought our own toiletries, on our way out for the evening we informed reception who were apologetic and assured they would be replaced, when we got back there was a new shower gel but still no soap, I also noticed the next day the disabled toilet in the lobby also had no soap in the dispenser, this is totally unacceptable. Both days when we arrived back at the room it hadn’t been cleaned, most frustratingly on the Sunday afternoon when the hotel seemed less busy our room had still not been cleaned at 5pm !! After speaking to a manager who was apologetic we were asked to wait in the bar and given a complimentary drink while the room was cleaned. Unfortunately the hotel did not reach our expectations.

Dear Annie, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay at our hotel. We sincerely apologise for the inconveniences you experienced during your birthday weekend. Your feedback is invaluable to us as it helps us identify areas for improvement and ensures that we can provide a better experience for our guests in the future. We deeply regret the initial check-in confusion regarding the number of guests in your reservation. This should never have happened, and we understand how it affected the start of your stay. We have discussed this with our reception team to prevent similar incidents in the future. It's disheartening to hear about the issues you faced with the bathroom amenities. We apologise for the oversight in maintaining the dispensers adequately stocked. This is not the standard of service we strive to provide, and we will be reviewing our processes to ensure such lapses do not occur again. The lack of housekeeping service during your stay is certainly not reflective of our usual standards. We understand the frustration you must have felt, especially on a special occasion. We have spoken with our housekeeping team to address the delays and ensure that all rooms are promptly serviced moving forward. We are glad that you brought these matters to our attention during your stay, as it allowed us to take corrective actions. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we hope that you were still able to find some enjoyment during your time with us. If you decide to give us another opportunity in the future, we are committed to making sure your experience is nothing short of exceptional. Please feel free to reach out to us directly so we can personally assist in ensuring your next stay meets your expectations. Once again, we apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we hope to have the chance to restore your faith in our hotel. Kind regards, Tyler Roy Front Office Manager

Bed is comfy. Room is a good size. Bathroom is nice and modern. However, service is slow and not great.
After first night we left our room at 10am for 4-5hours, came back and our room had not been cleaned (even though we turned on room service light). I had to find a cleaner to request they clean our room, they apologised and admitted they had missed it, I said it’s fine we’ll go for a coffee downstairs so don’t worry. Came back, room was cleaned but no toilet roll was left or replenished. Tried to call front desk to request, no one was answering, so we had to go and hunt this down ourselves from a cleaner trolley. Not ideal for a relaxing hotel stay.
When you check in they say “if you need anything call 0 to speak to us here” This is true, but be ready to listen to a calling tone for nearly 30 mins, or to hang up and keep trying. They do not want to/are unable to answer the phone!
Also, coffee at the bar is £4, we ordered coffee to the room, this took 30min on the phone, and another 40mins for the coffee to arrive to the room, this is £6 PER COFFEE!!!!! They charge £2 extra (per coffee) to deliver the coffee to the room. Absolute rip off and especially for such slow poor service. We wouldn’t have bothered if we’d of realised. We just wanted a relaxing morning coffee in bed, a minimum expectation of a hotel stay, and something I have received for much cheaper at hotels in Kensington London.

Recently stayed here for 2 nights and had an excellent experience here. Check in was easy using the online service, however we still had to swipe our card at reception on arrival for the £50 per day pre payment against purchases. Not had this arrangement before but each hotel has their system.
Reception staff were very helpful and welcoming and recommended a few places to eat if we didn't want to use the hotel.
Our room was very spacious and woohoo, a hotel room where the air conditioning actually works properly, it was amazing on such a hot weekend. The whole hotel being modern felt super cool the whole time...lovely. The bathroom was very nicely decorated and had plenty of space. Bed was super comfy too. Drinks in the bar on both days we stayed and on the second day the lady working there welcomed us warmly and even remembered what we drank the night before asking if we'd like the same again, naming each drink. That's proper service for you. I'm sorry but can't recall her name to mention here.
The hotel is a good 10 minute walk into the city centre which I see some people have complained about but equally it's 2 mins from the main railway station, you can't have it both ways. The car park (not the hotel's) is located next to the railway station and was excellent, big spaces, nice and open, it cost us £35 to stay for Thursday to Sunday which I thought was reasonable. Easiest way to pay is to use the paytopark app. It seems there are very few hotels these days that have their own parking and very rarely for free anyway.
Plenty of options for getting into the city, walk, taxi (around £8) or the bus for £1 each, so it's not really that much of an issue.
Lastly above all we were really impresssed by the hotels cleanliness, the toilets near reception were the best we have been in and this says it all about a hotel. During our visit as we went around the city, we stopped at various other hotels , cafes, etc to get a drink and use the loos, a couple of them a lot more expensive than the Clayton and their toilets were terrible. Well done to the service staff who obviously do a great job here.
We would definitely stay here again, excellent hotel, amazing staff, thank you.

I booked my stay through Secret Escapes for the Bed, breakfast, and evening meal package. A very short stroll from the train station though somewhat of a 15–20-minute walk into the city centre. Checked-in online though I still had to present a credit card for any additional purchases. My room was clean and spacious with the usual beverage tray, I wish hotels nowadays would have coffee bags rather than the instant coffee pouches. The bathroom was clean but no flannel or bathrobe. One of the lights besides the bed wasn’t working.
Dinner in the evening, which was included in the deal, was a choice of the set menu and a glass of prosecco or the al a cart for an additional £4 extra for a starter, main, dessert. I chose the set menu and asked for a glass of white wine rather than prosecco. Starter was Bocconcini with tomatoes and pesto which was delicious, then chicken with a crispy skin and dauphinoise potatoes and broccoli again no complaints, finishing off with the Eaton mess, thanks to my waiter Antonio and to Gary the Chef.
Slept well on the large queen bed though at times the mattress topper did move, pillows could have been somewhat firmer. I was impressed that the tv in the room worked well without any interference as in some hotels I’ve stayed in have bad reception on some channels. There was a radio in the room, but I couldn’t get that to work, good thing I brought my own alarm clock.
Breakfast was ok nothing special, it would have been good for guests to see a sign by the counter that you can order eggs to go either poached or fried rather than the usual congealed scrambled eggs on display. Coffee was from a machine taking your turn in the queue with other guests, I prefer a cafetiere of coffee at my table.
Would I recommend this hotel – yes very convenient for the train, quiet, clean and friendly staff.

We have just left, after staying here for one night during the week. We took our bags along about 12 noon and stored them until we returned about 7pm to check in. We were welcomed warmly. As part of our package we were given a free welcome drink of beer, cider or house wine. We were seated but no one came to take our order so I had to get up and ask for our drinks. I asked if I could upgrade my drink and pay the difference/extra - they said no! It was a shame as the hotel would have made money allowing me to do this and it may have enticed us to order more, instead I ordered a house rose wine, which was horrible and didn’t drink, my husband just about drank his house white. We then left the bar! Our room was at the front of the hotel, 214, it was ok. It had a small fridge, tea and coffee facilities, a double shower (no bath). We were only provided with one bath and one hand towel between two of us. Our bathroom also smelt a little around the toilet area, like it was unclean - though it looked clean and the room was tidy except the windows were filthy. There are no little extras here like shower caps, little bottles of shampoo etc. There is a main pump soap at the sink and one pump bottle of hair and body wash up in the shower. Would have been nice if the bottles were separate, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel etc. The best bit, the bed, it was huge and was very comfy, a fab mattress topper. Our room was as you came out the lift so a little noisy and worse was you couldn’t open the window as the road noise and building work over the road was unbearably loud. Not great! Breakfast was average. Tea was served in small tea pot, enough for one cup, hot buffet food was average in taste. Selection of food was fair, they had nice glass jars of fruit and yogurt which was a nice tough. The decor of the hotel is nice and up the spiral staircase is some cute, cosy seating areas and nooks to read and have a drink. Even with a midweek offer, we paid £139 for our break including breakfast, we wouldn’t return based on the noise and just lack of niceties. The hotel though is close to the train station, 2 min walk but is then a good 30 minute walk to the river and 25 minute walk into the older part of the town. It’s served by lots of buses.

We had a great two nights at The Clayton Hotel, first time at this hotel, welcoming and friendly check in, we had an Executive King with Balcony, on the 7th floor, huge corner balcony(room 710) extremely confutable bed, large walk-in shower, everything you need in a room, complementary soft drinks and water in fridge. We ate in the restaurant on the first night, food was tasty and freshly cooked, staff were very attentive and not that expensive. Very near Cambridge station, if you are parking in the station car park there may be a queue to get in as it’s also the traffic to pick people up from station. We walked into the city around 20 minute walk. Uber was only £9. Breakfast was good everything you would expect from a hotel breakfast, poached or fried can be ordered with waiting staff cooked fresh, cereals, fresh fruits, yogurts, etc all good. Can’t fault the staff, if your polite to them they are polite back. Would highly recommend this hotel for a city stay
