Our Country House Hotel sits in 4 acres of rolling countryside with magnificent views over the Black Mountains & Brecon Beacons. We have recently added [February 2019] the upgraded and refurbished "Country Collection" to our room stock, which are king sized, with individual designs and stunning views over the glorious Herefordshire countryside. The kitchen uses fabulous local produce on their extensive menus to create mouthwatering, freshly cooked dishes. There is a full Gluten Free menu and other dietary needs are well catered for. Plentiful free parking, hi speed broadband & a friendly team of staff make the Pilgrim the Hotel of choice for the Wye Valley & Herefordshire.

Had a lovely relaxed Sunday lunch overlooking with fantastic views of beautiful Herefordshire countryside. Food was top notch and service really good. Was with a large group of friends and all our meals came out at the same time.

Sadly I have to say that our stay wasn't that pleasant. Our 99.00 buy a gift. Com voucher turned into 156.00 pounds stay, when we were informed that we could chose to have breakfast at an extra cost, and an extra cost for room with view. All very dissapointing. The country fair

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us and for TripAdvisor for allowing us to do so. We take on board your comments about food during your stay and as all thoughts on food are subjective, accept them in a constructive way. It is very rare, if not unheard of, that our staff are described as "not very smiley" and I would caution readers of this review to look at others on this page for other thoughts. Because of that history of staff satisfaction I will not dwell on that aspect of your review either. It seems that the root of your issues with your stay was breakfast and having to pay for it. The lauded £99 voucher from Buyagift was in fact, the real cause of your disappointment on your "Birthday Weekend". Because of the volume of clients that they control we are forced into using voucher companies, even though they are a blight on the industry. The "something for next to nothing" culture they have engendered is having a terrible impact on ours and similar business. So many people buy them that a Hotel or B&B can barely afford to turn them away. What seems a fabulous deal for the guest [and indeed for the voucher companies, who take up to 30% of the fee], is in fact, killing lots of small B&B's & independent Hotels. From the miserly £99, we receive £14.35 per person per night of their stay and have received the same amount for the last 8 years, despite rising costs [Wages up by 25%, Power by 15% and Food around 30%]. Despite this, we provide a room, en-suite, bar, restaurant, car park, 4 acres of grounds and 26 [normally happy] staff. So yes, we do charge for breakfast and upgrades from the standard rooms with no views to speak of & quite rightly so. Your room has stunning views over the Wye Valley into Wales from two windows and yes, it is over a flat roof from one and a chimney obscures a fraction of the view as well. [Our glasses are very much half full however]. The 'Country Buffet' [£5.95] includes Tea [flavoured teas available] or coffee, toast, butter, preservatives, yoghurt, cereals, and a choice of fruit juice. Great value for money we think and to upgrade to a cooked Herefordshire breakfast it is only a £5 supplement. If it were a "Continental" version, there may well be melon, ham, pastries etc but we keep costs down for our voucher clients. Turning to heating. We have many more comments about the Hotel being too hot than we do about it being cold. The heating system comes on for several hours in the morning and then again in the evening/night time. Guests who are in their rooms when the heating is off, generally use the extra heaters provided for just that purpose. In an old building this is the most efficient way to operate and it has served us well for 16 years. The Hotel is however, undergoing a programme of behind the scene refurbishment and 5 rooms have been individually re-designed to reflect a "Country Luxury" feel and have met with fabulous reactions from guests. The reception area has been transformed and downstair corridors redecorated in a warm and well furnished manner. More will follow throughout the year as we move to complete this programme of enhancements. Another programme will follow next winter. My advice to prospective voucher clients is don't do it. The £82.50 plus VAT that you pay simply is simply not enough to keep businesses afloat, you will be restricted on availability and not get the best rooms. We can't afford to take more than a handful of rooms per night except in very quiet periods. Please go direct, pay a little more, get better availability, possibly better rooms and help keep local staff employed and local food producers in business. Best wishes Steve
