WHAT A GREAT STAY AT A REASONABLE PRICE! THE SUITE WE BOOKED WAS BEAUTIFUL, AND THE 10 FOOT HIGH RAINFALL SHOWER HEAD MADE US NEVER WANT TO SHUT OFF THE WATER. THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT, AND THE STAFF, ESPECIALLY CARLY IN THE BAR, ALL WERE WONDERFUL. WE BOOKED ANOTHER VISIT FOR LATER THIS YEAR. TOFINO IS GREAT, BUT WE PREFER THIS RESORT IN UCLUELET!

We had a very nice 3 night stay at Black Rock. The location is amazing, beside a great rocky beach and the great hiking trails on the Wild Coast Trail. The views from the lobby are lovely.

We stayed in a lodge studio suite. The room is spacious and comfortable with a nice sized bathroom and deck. There was a small dining table and chairs which was nice for meals. Unfortunately the room was at the back of the lodge and the view was of some bushes and trees with the ocean a long ways away.

The resort is very nice and should be 5 stars but is more like a 4 at best. For the price charged I did expect more. With some improvements they could make it worth what they charge but they aren’t there in my opinion. I was hoping they would send out an email survey to obtain guest feedback but I’ve received nothing.

Some areas that need improvement:

Studio suites should have more dishes. Having only 2 of each item (2 plates, 2 glasses etc) and no dishwasher meant I was constantly doing dishes since there was no housekeeping during the pandemic.

Housekeeping items should be easier to obtain, we had to call for towels, coffee, etc because only 1 nights worth of items is provided on check in and there was no housekeeping provided.

The decks are not private, they are all glass sides and only 2 inches from each other. We rarely sat on the deck because of the lack of privacy. There is no air conditioning so it can get warm, even in late September. There was also a lot of noise (stomping feet, music) from the unit above us. I’m not sure if they were just very noisy people or the sound proofing wasn’t good.

The pools and hot tubs were closed to guests due to the pandemic unless you had a spa reservation. This felt like a cash grab, only allowing you to use what is normally included if you buy a spa package. Most hotels allow guests to book a time for the pool to maintain social distancing but here we had no option unless we had a spa time already booked. Use of hotel amenities such as the pool should be given to all guests not just spa guests.

Social distancing wasn’t enforced during check in. We tried to check in a little early when there was no one there but the room wasn’t ready. At 4 pm check in there was a long waiting line including families with their kids even though the sign said only one guest per household at check in.

The staff were somewhat friendly but didn’t make much effort. We let them know it was our anniversary when we booked and they did mention it on arrival but there was no card or anything as most hotels usually do for guests. We were never asked how our stay was in any interactions with staff including check out.

All in all it was a great trip despite the challenges and I’d consider going back because of the location but would love to see some improvements first.

Response from Adele Larkin, General Manager at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort

Dear Lovingthesun, Thank you so much for your comments. I agree, some extra dishware and towels should be added to the rooms. We have a list of items that we will be upgrading this winter, those are two items that have been included. For the most part the units can be fairly quiet, I think sometimes people forget that there are floors below them perhaps this is something that we can include in our in-room information. Thank you for letting me know about the lack of attention to your anniversary, we love to be included in these celebrations I am not sure why this detail was not picked up by us properly, please accept our sincere apologies. We do take the COVID protocols seriously at our resort, we however are counting on our guests to adhere to the guidelines and protocols that we have posted and in place. It is our hope that all of our guests recognize how important it is for us all to do our part. I am so sorry that we did not make you feel comfortable in this regard. I am pleased you are interested in returning, we look forward to seeing you again. All the best, Adele

My wife and I just enjoyed a couple nights in a one bedroom suite at the Black Rock Resort . We took advantage of the Relax Spa Package which included two luxurious robes (white), Sea Kelp bath salts to be used in the large soaker tub and a $100 gift card which we used for a light lunch and a breakfast.

We loved our spacious room with a well stocked kitchen, and a large bathroom with a separate shower and soaker tub. The best part is the large windows and the VIEW! You look out at the waves and surf crashing on the rocks in the bay in front of you. We slept with the window open one night and fell asleep to the waves.
We found the staff very friendly and enjoyed talking to them about life in Ukluelet and their special part of the world.
One of our favourite experiences was the Wild Pacific Trail which is right next to the resort. Even though it was a drizzly day the trail is absolutely beautiful. It was supposed to to be a two hour hike but we took about three because we stopped a every view point. The hike is free but we gladly put some money in the donation box at the end. We did not use the spa but you can tell that it would be a world class spa.
The best part of the resort is the view, warm staff and grand modern decor. The worst part is the that we did not stay long enough. I would recommend at least 3-4 nights to enjoy the resort and surrounding area.

Thank you Black Rock Resort!

We have just returned from our stay at the Blackrock Resort. (Tuesday February 25th – Friday February 28th)

They Black Rocks location is perfect! Close to great walking trails, restaurants and a new brew pub.

From our perspective our stay was fine, not great not poor just fine. We are aware that it is off season and you are probably operating with skeleton staff, however there were enough miss steps that we would probably not return.

When we arrived, our room was ready, and we proceeded to unpack. Imagine my surprise when I opened that nightstand drawer and found three used Kleenex. With the heightened importance of cleanliness and the importance of washing hands and disposing of items such as Kleenex this was alarming. I called the front desk, and someone did come immediately to clean the drawer and collect the Kleenex. I still wonder how truly clean our room was.

We finished unpacking and thought we would go to your lounge and watch the hockey game on one of the two TVS. Nope the TVS were not working.

Our first full day in Ucluelet we ventured out to explore the sites and enjoy what Ucluelet had to offer. We returned to our room around 4:00 and our room was still not cleaned so that made it awkward to relax in our room not knowing when the room attendant would be arriving to clean our room.

Service in the lounge was again fine. But the wine prices were outrageous. For example, a bottle of Cedar Creek Chardonnay retails for $18.99 at the BCLB they sell it for $60.00 that is a 300% mark up. If you choose to have a 6oz glass $16.00.

We had dinner in the restaurant the last night of our stay. Even though the restaurant was empty I thought it may be a good idea to make a reservation so we could have a nice table. I was told I could make a reservation but could not request a specific table or type of table. So, I did not make a reservation and we did land up with a “fine” table. Service was slow, the food was ok, after we finished our meal, we sat with dirty dishes in front of us for almost nine minutes.

I don’t recall anyone asking us how we were enjoying our stay, maybe they did not care.

I did write an email tom the General Manager and to the Guest Services Manager.
It has been almost a week and I have not received a reply, guess I was right they do not care.

The hotel itself has a great location and perfect for our three day get-away watching the waves crashing all around us. I agree with several reviews that the food in the restaurant and bar was poor value for money and very greasy. We ended up going out of the hotel for our meals after the first night. My big complaint was about the customer service AFTER we left the hotel. I paid our bill on my credit card when we checked out and was surprised to find an additional charge on my credit card statement on the day following our departure. I phoned the hotel and was told that it was for the bottle of wine from our room that we drank! This was totally false and we didn’t touch any wine from our room. We did see one bottle of white wine in the room when we arrived, and it was still there when we left. Apparently, there should have been a bottle of white PLUS a bottle of red in the room. How would we know that there was a bottle short to start with? The manager offered a weak apology when I phoned and stated to me that they had every right to add the charge to our credit card, even after we had left the hotel. No phone call to explain the charge. Just a weak excuse stating that they had made some recent internal change regarding which department was responsible for restocking the wine in the room.
I was struck by the insincerity of the response from the manager. He did reverse the charge, but his attitude was hardly re-assuring that it would not happen again. Future guests be warned and check your credit card statement after you leave. This will likely happens again!
The bath tub was also not cleaned once during our 3 day stay, even after declining the offer of no housekeeping for a $10 credit.

Arrived on a Monday to a power blackout that lasted 5 pm to 10 pm. We were foolish enough to think this was a one off. The next day, the power went off at 7 am and came back after 10 pm. I had planned to get some work done but could not after my computer died. My CPAP machine would not work. Absolutely nothing worked since even the suite’s kitchen was electric. Management were not sympathetic to the inconvenience. Curiously, the kitchen staff mentioned that power cuts were a regular occurrence and they had learnt to cope and continue serving meals. The lobby staff were also hooked up to a portable generator. After paying $400 a nite to stay at this place for 5 days, I except a lot more including a luxury hotel equipped with the ability to deal with power outages which they should anticipate given their location. Would not stay here again and neither would I recommend the resort. Torino would have been a better option.

Peter, Thank you so much for your review. We are sorry that the severe storm took out the power to our community, definitely nothing we could have planned for and certainly did not wish for. I am not sure who you spoke to in our kitchen, we are not hooked up to a portable generator, the emergency systems in the property are hooked up to a large generator that is definitely far from portable. It runs all of the emergency lighting, the heating/cooling systems/water systems, etc. The kitchen is able to function because it runs off of propane gas cooking surfaces, the refrigeration and air handling runs on the generator. The front desk is considered essential as is the phone systems, they too run off the large generator. The size of the generator that would be needed to provide power for the entire facility would be extremely large, not to mention the complex systems needed to make it function for all the properties power needs, definitely not something that we have the space for or the fuel capacity for. We are so sorry that the 14 hours you were without power ruined your entire 5 day stay with us. Storm watching season isn't for everyone. I would definitely like to understand who on our management team you spoke to, each situation that was brought to our attention was dealt with on an individual basis. Again, we appreciate your comments and respectfully understand that you have chosen not to stay with us again. Tofino is a great option however please note that they too are affected with the winter storms and occasionally have power outages.

We started our stay at this resort situated on the black rocks of the coast of Ucluelet, in awe of the view in our room on the 3rd floor of the main building over looking the ocean (picture attached). Words cannot do justice to the view and the continual immersion in nature we felt with the massive windows inviting the view of the ocean, sky (including starry nights) and coast into our room. We could also hear the continual movement of the water and waves in this room, which was clean, comfortable and designed to "blend in" with nature all around us.

We stayed for three nights and after having breakfast at Currents, the restaurant in the hotel, we went back every morning. The salmon skillet was an "OMG" dish from the first bite. We also dined there once in the evening, equally great and every seat in the dining room overlooks the ocean where we kept our eyes peeled for whales while we ate!

I cannot say enough about the staff, every single staff member we interacted with was sincerely friendly and really cared about our stay and attention to detail, from check in to the staff at the restaurant. Not only are they well trained, but they are obviously hiring people who are true "people people".

The energy of this place was so positive, made even more positive because its dog friendly! We didn't have ours with us for this trip but we sure enjoyed saying hello to everyone else's, dogs have a way of connecting people wherever they are!

Finally, on a short walk away from the hotel along the ocean I discovered a sign about a ship wreck, looked up and there was the remnants of one of the ships that went down in the "Graveyard of the Pacific". Wow, a piece of history right there on the rocks (now getting covered with trees and brush but still very visible)!

We also enjoyed a trip to the spa after a morning of hiking and doing yoga on Wickaninnish Beach! It was also amazing and so relaxing and rejuvenating.

We also felt safe, COVID protocols were in place and staff and guests were compliant.

This was a trip of a lifetime to this beautiful resort in this stunningly beautiful area. Could not have been a better stay. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

Staying for nights and so far it is amazing experience. The room is very roomy and clean. It comes with a little kitchenette and has all the amenities. The kitchenette has everything from plates, utensils, dishwasher and even toaster. The bathroom has a open window concept connected to the suite. The view to each unit is facing the ocean. Each unit is walkable distance to the main hotel lobby where all the restaurants is located. Due to COVID they are not serving lunch and dinner is by appointment only. The spa is located in the main building and is connected to the hot tub, swimming pool and gym room. The room is very comfortable and walking in the room the Music was on and playing some relaxing meditation that’s welcoming and calming. Parking in the premises is very convenient and my unit is in the second floor. All stairs has non slippery plates installed. I used my hotels.com points and able to claim my free night. Is an amazing experience on this location and walkable distance to the big beach. Is closed to the Main Street to the only Co-OP in town.

The room was nice enough and the view was phenomenal but holy was the service ever garbage! We ordered room service the first night asked for a harvest bowl that is chicken and a bunch of delicious veggies and barley with roasted chickpeas and pepitas on top and I literally got a box of nothing but barley slapped in the corner of the box. So we call and tell them, they bring another box with nothing but a piece of chicken in it. Next morning we go in to the restaurant for breakfast and they “ran out” of French toast... and then we make the mistake of getting room service for dinner again, we were first told no room service was being offered and asked to talk to a manager and finally ordered $50+ steaks and got a steak that was maybe 3 inches across with 2 mouthfuls of potatoes and one brocolini floret and one asparagus spear. For $50?! Upon checking out, no one asked how our stay was they were more irritated we were checking out at the counter vs using express check out. We were charged full price for everything including the first meal that took 3 attempts to get right.

In addition to that, when we booked we asked about the spa and they said it would be open even though it says closed mon and tues (the 2 days we were staying) on their website. Upon check in we asked if we could book massages and they said yep spas open you just have to go in and book with them so we go to the spa and there’s a sign on the door saying closed Monday and Tuesday...

I would not stay here again nor would I recommend it to anyone. The view from our room was lovely but many places have the same views and a much better bang for your buck.

We came back this year thinking we would get the same experience we had when we stayed here in 2015 but we were extremely disappointed. The rooms were very run down and not clean. They have seen better days and in need of a face lift. The bed was old and very uncomfortable. The toilet was not secure and had a gross ring around the base and just wasn’t clean. The faucet handle just popped off. The carpets need to be replaced desperately. We had to constantly call for new towels and extras for the condo and took forever to get through to guest services and sometimes they just didn’t answer or just didn’t deliver your request. For the kind of money they charge, we expect a different experience. The pool, hot tub, fitness room and house keeping were cancelled during Covid but certainly did not reflect it in the price of the room. Cob webs and just plain dirty. The vista is beautiful but there are a lot of other beautiful places to stay in the area for this kind of money. WILL NOT BE COMING BACK
