We stayed for one night. The view from our room in the main building was stunning. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable but it was very dated. We loved watching the cruise ships going past during the night (about 10pm) all lit up.
We didn't like the noise from the rooms either side of us. Assume it was a family with children one side which was understandable the noise settled down about midnight. The noise from the other room was very loud. I'm glad we didn't have children with us as I wouldn'thave wanted to explain what the noise was. Let's just say the walls are very thin and we could hear everything. That noise stopped much later.
The main restaurant was only open for breakfast and the staff were inexperienced. It took some time to persuade the waitress to ask the chef to defrost the only gluten free roll she could find. She eventually came back and said the chef was going to turn the oven on. We didn't have a problem getting a gluten free meal in the pub restaurant the night before. You could have a burger or fish in a roll. The pub was very dated and like the rest of the building it really needs a make over (and thicker walls). The terrace overlooking the river was lovely and we watched a bald Eagle in a tree shrieking for ages.
Like all hotels they are struggling to get staff so don't expect a maid service unless you are staying several nights. The water which was supposed to be in the room (on the first night only), was missing but the tap water is fine to drink so that wasn't a problem. The receptionist was very helpful and told us to visit Elk Falls. It was lovely but we parked in the first car park we came to which is a long walk to the falls, partially through the hydro electric company's land which closes at dusk. We arrived quite late and weren't sure exactly when it would close so after visiting the falls we walked back along the road just in case! There is a car park further up the road which would have been a much better option at that time of day. Well worth the trek though.
There were some vintage cars in the car park that evening, I think it was prom night as we saw a few young people in prom dresses.
The hotel reminded me of the hotel in the film Dirty Dancing. Lovely to look at but a bit dated. Probably wouldn't stay there again. Shame as the location is great.

We arrived Sept 19th, we expected that all services would be available at Painter’s Lodge as it had been highly recommended as the best place to stay in Campbell River if you want to fish. Only rooms and the pub restaurant was open when we arrived. Everything else had been closed, including their April Point site and activity centre. When I booked or subsequent communications from the resort never indicated that services would be very limited during our stay. Also, realized a few hours after checking out that I had left two pieces of clothing in a dresser drawer. Immediately called and told exactly where the clothing was so we could return to pick them up. They couldn’t confirm with housekeeping at that time and never returned my call as promised. We called back twice and were finally told that housekeeping didn’t find anything. When we offered to come back as only 1 hour away, we then told the room was occupied, even though the resort was very quiet when we had been there the two previous evenings. We won’t be back to Painter’s and would not recommend given our experience. Also value for money was poor as rooms are quite dated and fairly basic for the prices charged

Check in at the main lodge building, beautiful wood and stone, has spectacular outdoor patio for sunny days, and pub, no dining room due to Covid 19. Staff follow strict protocol, distancing, masks, rooms empty for 1 day between guests. Our room with balcony and ocean views was good - good beds, sheets, pillows, thick towels. But signs of 'wear' - bathtub faucet bent, sink faucet needed "lid", tiny sink chips. Ignoring that, the unit was clean, staff friendly and helpful. A grand old lady, memories of yesteryear, when there were lots of salmon and salmon fishermen. Pool and hottub closed due to Covid. Two tennis courts, beautiful gardens, spacious layout and landscape.

We stayed at the Painters Lodge for one night enroute home to Victoria from port Hardy.
We had an ocean view room in the “Vancouver Wing” with stunning views. Our first impression was one of amazement! The scale of the room was grand, , great high ceilings with beautiful beams and wood. The banks of windows were also encased and panes separated by wood. We were in a corner unit with a balcony that gave us great views of both ocean and trees, it was a warm day, but with the large ceiling fan and balcony doors open it cooled off in no time.
The lodge has updates going on in bathrooms etc. that will be appreciated I am sure, but there is a certain charm and grandness about the place that we haven’t felt walking into a lodge or hotel in a long time. A Wow factor, we loved it.
Staff are amazing, front desk, grounds, pub it whoever we encountered. We enjoyed food, views, staff and drinks at the pub. Everyone was working hard to please and accommodate us.
This stay was the highlight of our trip.
A Big Thankyou, we will be back!

Paid way to much for the room. Found out after we arrived that going rate was $229 and we paid $340. We asked to check in an hour early and received an email they couldn't accommodate our request but would do their best to accommodate us on arrival. We arrived at 3:15pm and had to change for a wedding at 4 (check in is 4). They told us we couldn't have the room so we asked for a place to change. We were pointed to the lobby washroom and had to change in bathroom stalls, some accommodation that is! We also found out that our friend was given an ocean view room with no reservation upon his arrival at 3pm for $229. Why was this not offered to us? Why did we pay $340 for a dungeon garden room? Why couldn't we have that room early to get changed for a wedding?

Next was the room. We had to leave the wedding between the ceremony and reception to check in (20 min drive ea way.) Finally got our cave of a room, dark and smelled like a mix of stale cigarette smoke, mold and fish. No bedside table lamp, tv remote didn't work and the tv was hanging off a broken mount with the cords hanging out the bottom, stains on the carpet everywhere, broken towel rod and toilet seat. No screens on the windows, no AC, mold in the bathroom faucet and the whole place had clearly last been renovated in the 80s.
Terrible room, terrible customer service and terrible rates. Better off with a cheap chain hotel.

Update: After 2 voicemails I was finally able to get ahold of the manager Kira. After explaining the above concerns with her politely she only seemed concerned with our friends room being undercharged. She told me she would pass the deficiencies with out room on to maintenance and get back to me. I never did here back from her even after 2 more emails to check in. There was zero apologies and zero compensation.

I moved to Campbell River in 2013 and Painters Lodge and April Point were all people were talking about, but never had the opportunity to stay there. I have since moved to Victoria and wanted to celebrate my anniversary/birthday there this year. Well, what a DISSAPOINTMENT. The room was not bad, for the price, however, when we went to reception in the morning to ask for maps of any walking trails, we were told to go onto Google, they had none. I then asked for the Cruise ship schedule, to watch the ships go past, guess what... I was told to go onto Google, as they had none. (They used to have these in the past).
I was told that the restaurant was closed for dinners and that the pub did not take any reservations for dinner (There were going to be 9 of us for dinner). I was told to come to the pub at 5pm and hold my own table. When we arrived at 5pm, we mentioned we needed a big table as there were going to be 9 of us, to which the waitress asked if I had made reservations, as they were expecting a table of 15 (how did they know if we weren't allowed to make reservations????) We were not impressed with this response to say the least. The pub also closes at 8pm!!! HELLO.
The morning breakfast was TERRIBLE. It mentioned that a Continental breakfast was included in the room price. Well, this was what was on offer for our Continental breakfast: The bagels, muffins and croissants were at least 2-3 days old and stale. There were red apples, and cornflakes and fruit loops. We had to ask for bowls for the cereal and I could barely eat the Bagel it was so stale. We ate breakfast at Dolphins the following day which was 100 % better.
I will not be returning to Painters Lodge to stay and sadly this has definitely deteriorated and a refurb would be a good idea with better service all round.

While some areas of this property have been maintained, others were not in good condition. We booked a garden room which is in need of an upgrade. The paint on the deck was peeling and the plastic chairs were stained and in need of a good clean. No duvets and a plug-in air cooler which was too noisy to leave on at night. We booked the restaurant only to be told upon arrival at 6.30 that it was closed. We ate in the pub (different menu) and ordered beef dip which was adequate but not great. The swimming pool was not operational. The receptionist told us we could go over to April Point to have dinner utilizing the complimentary water taxi, we thought this was a good idea but when we checked the menus we discovered the restaurant was closed Mondays and Tuesdays - this was a Monday. We contacted management and apart from the wrong information provided about April Point they blamed the pandemic. The room rate should be reduced if all the amenities cannot be provided. We were also told that Painter's Lodge is a fishing resort and if we wanted a cheaper rate we should've booked into a Comfort Inn. We keep our home in good order so why would we want to pay for sub standard accommodation. A refund or partial refund was requested but this was not forthcoming.

Amazing location and we had a great time visiting the local attractions and enjoying the on-site whale watching tour. Agree with other reviewers that the hotel seems very tired and the rooms need to be upgraded. Our loft room was clean and quite spacious for a family of 5 - although carpet needed cleaning, there was a bit of a musty smell and the bathroom was far too small to cater for 5 people. Pool was closed although we did see people working on it. Gardens are kept really nice. Breakfast was distinctly average and definitely not up to the standard we had come to expect during our stay in the Pacific Northwest- understaffed to cope with number of guests, did not refill items very quickly and not a great selection of food. Overall we enjoyed our short stay but that was due more to the great location.

$400 a night for a very dated and tired room - almost the same price as a room at the Pan Pacific in Vancouver. Our bed had a single flimsy blanket on it that didn’t even reach over the edge of the mattress. I had to go to the reception for more. The hotel had no restaurant open and you had to dine in the pub… if you could get a table. At breakfast time I was refused entry before 9am because they had a tour group in. For dinner on our second evening reception had recommended fine dining at their sister lodge April Point to find a dining room with blown lightbulbs not replaced, a plain wooden table with not a single decoration other than being handed a couple of sets of cutlery wrapped in a paper napkin. This hotel would have been fine at $125 to $150 per night but was ridiculously overpriced for the $400 I paid. Does the management of the NCHR hotel group care about service? According to one of their staff NCHR stands for No-one Cares How it’s Run!

Beautiful and serene hotel! We were almost disueded by the negative reviews read here, and found them wholly inaccurate. This lodge is gorgeous and sits on manicured grounds. There are 3 Gardners we saw each day mowing and tending to the outstanding plantings and hanging baskets, it looks like every room has a patio or balcony, most with ocean views.
We were lucky to get the 1 bedroom suite, oceanfront in the main building. It is on the second floor with wood floors, 2 balconies and opening doors that let in fresh sea air, and overlook the dock. There are maybe 15 rooms in this main lodge, over the main floor, comprised of the lobby, kitchen, and pub. The legends restaurant was not open, but that area used for the continental breakfast. Usual breads and cereal, yogurt fare, but if you ask, can get scrambled eggs and two link sausages.
There are other buildings, maybe 4 or 5 with peekaboo sea or sea views, call and ask.
Some have garden views.
The pool is slated to open tomorrow! It looks lovely, all tiled.
The staff are eager to please, funny and helpful.

We are so glad we ignored the negative reviews and chanced it on this gem!
The pub has excellent food as well, we had the burger, fries, and fish and chips!

Answer from steve h
Mobile, Alabama24 contributions43 helpful votes
Starts March /April usually There have been some dramatic changes to the Resort. But the start of the Season is cheaper as bookings will be low. But sorry to say so will all the other services that go along with a Resort such as Painters. Are you fishing or just coming the Wild West Coast. Could be important as the Charter Fishing at Painters is a bit of a challenge these last .two seasons. The Lodge has been running under new ownership for three years. Still trying to find a way to (Manage) the Resort As I said many changes. And there are a lot of moving parts Take a look.at April Point the Sister Resort on Quadra. Good luck... GH
