This is a heritage house so keep that in mind when you’re there. It has original sinks, doorknobs and even toilet. It can be a bit chilly but there are fireplaces to keep you warm. The porch was my favourite part. I spent a lot of time just sitting outside enjoying the lovely quiet neighbourhood. It’s a 5 minute walk from town or the beach. If you are looking for a place for the whole family that has lots of charm this is it.

We were disappointed in this stay. Girls getaway, we picked this spot for the outside space, very disappointed, pictures of the space were not even close to what we expected, missing furniture and no fire table at all. ALSO, there is a renter in the basement, we did not expect this, so, we did not use the hot tub. The furniture inside needs new seating, all chairs and couches are sunken in, hard to find a comfortable place to sit. ALSO, needed are some maintenance items to be completed in the house, door knobs falling off, curtain rods coming apart. I also connected with the owner about several issues, day #2, he completely ignored my note!!! It is a heritage house and has that charm.

As other reviewers have said, airplane noise is a challenge, especially at 6am. I suspect this problem afflicts most accommodations in Sidney as the downtown area sits at the end of the runway. In other words, if you can't tolerate it stay in Victoria or North Saanich.

The bed was comfortable enough in the Duck room. I agree with the reviewers who suggested a fan would have helped a lot to cool the room at night.

This is a classic well preserved Craftsman bungalow so don't expect modern amenities. The shower is a stall installed in a closet. Pity they didn't install a light fixture - you have to put the main bedroom light on and leave the door wide open. Staying solo this didn't bother me but might not suit some room sharers. Shampoo was provided but no conditioner.

The admonishment to not flush the toilet after 9:30 is an inconvenience. I ignored it since I was the only guest.

Breakfast was quite good. The coffee was good as were the souffle the first morning and omelette the second. The fruit bowl was also nice. I would have appreciated orange juice which was not offered; but admittedly I didn't ask for it.

As a bit of an architecture buff I appreciated the house but I can't say I'd recommend this B&B. And it's not exactly cheap at CA$115 per night, cash or MasterCard only.

The Orchard House is only 3 blocks from the main street in Sidney, a short walk to a very nice downtown area. It is an older house with lots of charm and very reasonable rates.

We stayed in the Duck Room, which was, well ... "Ducky" ... with duck odds and ends here and there, including a cute stuffed duck between our pillows. The room was interesting and clean. The toilet, shower, and wash basin were all separated. The toilet and shower were in small rooms that may have been closets at one time. The wash basin was in the bedroom. This was okay with us as it seemed to fit this 1914 house. But, the bed slumped in the middle, which was not okay. The age of the house should not have affected the quality of the bed. Also, there was room for only one open suitcase. My wife used a chair for her suitcase. Fortunately, we pack light, with only a travel-on suitcase each.

Breakfast. Well, breakfast is a big deal at a B & B. At this B & B it was indicative of the attitude of the host owners. To begin with our hosts announced that breakfast would be at 8:00. This did not work for us as our traveling partners needed to leave by 8 a.m. to meet their transportation. With some reluctance and also some complaining, we got breakfast at 7:30.

Picture this. I sat down at breakfast (in a very nice room with attractive place and table settings) to the tiniest little fruit bowl I have ever seen. It was no more than one inch in diameter, just enough to hold 2 raspberries and 3 blueberries. Along side it was the smallest glass of orange juice I have ever seen—a 4 ounce glass, half full—which was immediately whisked away by the hostess after I drank my two sips, without asking whether I wanted more. Since I don't eat eggs, I had asked for a substitute. No problem, said the host. I then got one of the smallest bowls of granola I have ever seen, with just enough granola for 4 raisins. At this point, I figured I had a total of eleven (11) calories. Good for my waist line, but not what I was looking for. My wife said her tiny little folded over portion of an egg was generally without flavor. She also was served 1/2 slice of toast. We did have home made blueberry muffins, however, which were pretty good.

The breakfast was indicative of much of the service we got at the B & B. No tea or coffee, no cookies, no "welcome" into the (cozy) living room, none of the items that indicate that the operators are glad to have us as their guests. Not only that, but the host indicated to one member in our party that they lost money when they had only two guests, and they probably should not have taken in anyone at all. This might be the reason for their somewhat tightwad approach. All of us in our party felt more like unwelcome interlopers into the lives of Gerry and Gaye, rather than like welcome guests. We were happy to leave.

I am 92 yrs old and was visiting my son and grands for just a couple days. stayed at this B&B I booked from the internet. (DIDN'T LOOK AT THE PREVIIOUS REVIEWS- BIG MISTAKE).
The owners insisted I leave the house each day at 9:30AM and not come back till after 4:00.
I had some friends arranged to come get me to do some visiting. I planned to do this in the afternoon. The owner asked for their phone # and he then call them and insist that they come to get me immediately.
On my last day, the after breakfast the owner sat in the living room with me and would ask if I was going to sit in the living room all day or didn't i have somewhere to go?
I told him I was planned to leave around noon as my Grandson was at work and couldn't come pick me up till after noon and my flight wasn't until 2:30PM that day. I told him that my plan was to rest and relax at the B&B until noon when my Grandson came to pick me up.
The owner asked for my grandson's phone #, called him and told him I asked to leave the B&B and to come get me immediately!
that was NOT true.
Bottom line-- VERY disappointed- Stay away from this control freak!!!

The b&b is in a good location in the town of Sidney as you can walk to restaurants, etc. This bed and breakfast does not meet our standards. The room was small and was not made up and we were not asked if we needed anything. There was a fridge located in the closet but we was not told about this. There is no public sitting area. The breakfast was minimal. The first day was not too bad but the second day was very smimpy. We had an egg dish both days with only 1 small piece toast and an apple fruit dish both days. No juice was offered. The first day there were also muffins. There was cereal on the side board but was not offered.

The place wasn't as bad as some of the reviews however, it is not a good place to stay. The uncomfortable mattress, the jet planes that sounded like they were trying to land on the roof and the intolerable heat in the room were my biggest complaints. Even just a small fan in the room would have moved the hot air around a bit but there was nothing except a two inch bit of wood to prop open the window. After we went to bed and turned off the lights we were startled to see the interior of our room ablaze with the flashing red lights from the underbelly of jet # umpteen as it skimmed the roof of the B&B.
Breakfast, next morning was quite good. Contrary to reviews on Trip Advisor, the egg dish was delicious, the half slice of whole wheat toast was good, the muffin was tasty, there was butter and grape jelly on the table, the coffee was good and plentiful and our host did not monopolize the conversation. Also, the towels and sheets looked clean and new.

We were thoroughly disappointed and definitely surprised with this B & B. Normal care to attention & hospitality were sadly missing. Our room had a peculiar smell as if it had not been aired or cleaned in some time as did the rest of the inside of the home. Bedding & towels were not crisp or fresh. The bathroom had no supplies ie shampoo or nice soaps. For ventilation, we even had to prop open a window. Our bedroom door did not have an exterior lock leaving your items unsecure. Breakfast was a very limited menu with no choices or normal condiments such as salt or butter for your toast- this definitely reflected our host’s wishes. No tv in room for relaxation very lacking.Helpful info ie tightness of ferries schedules was lacking as well. Overall, this is one stop that you can afford to miss.

Never left a bad review before but in case you'll get depressed as we are now...we'd love to share our horrible experience at this Orchard House in Sidney and help other possible victims:

Worst B&B experience ever, totally ruined our good holiday mood and great impression on B&B gained from our previous B&B experiences based on 10+ B&Bs in Europe and North America...:

1. Smelly room with poorest facilities (we stupidly picked it for the fake beautiful photos but the only experience there is hard to breathe and the floor is dirty; there's even no sockets in the room to recharge our camera battery; the door is hard to lock&open so you may very possibly get locked out if you return late;you'll knock your teeth loose easily if you're taller than 170cm when walk in/out the door) if you're given a basement suite (which they forced us to accept it and cheating it's more valuable). We had to accept only because we can hardly breathe in the "beautiful-pictured) room and we got 4 ppl...and never expect this so totally no preparation for another option and it's late

2. Worst host ever met (not even a word like welcome, just remind us repeatedly the rules to use this place...feeling we're not treated as guests but criminals; endless nonsense chatting (not even know standing up to greet us but sitting there like a boss during the long time-wasting chatting), such a big waste of our precious time on the island....

3. very tiny amount of breakfast and worst coffee ever drinks in my life...after the breakfast we rushed to Starbucks to comfort&fill our stomach

And last but not the least: you'll enjoy the loud noise from planes passing by from time to time when you're indulged in the smell

And you might be interested to know that we're not the only one got the bad feeling....we can see the dissatisfaction of another guest in the same house.

Response from oldorchardhouse, Owner at Orchard House Bed & Breakfast
Responded 17 May 2010
We are a classic heritage house and have been in business for over 20 years with many repeat happy guests. In order to accommodate this couple who arrived late in the evening when are two regular B&B rooms were full we provided alternate accommodation which we no longer offer. We are known for our hospitality. We appreciate these guests comments and have made improvements where necessary and possible. Gerry is delighted to welcome new guests offering suggestions as to restaurants and other local attractions...he is also a knowledgeable Penninsula realtor. Most guests are delighted with the healthy breakfast which includes a fruit compote, egg dish with toast and fresh, home made baking and delicious coffee.

Location is great. That's the only positive thing I can say. Signs in room (wish I had taken a picture!!) state no flushing of toilet or taking a shower after 9:30 p.m, the property smells of like old men gone rotten and not buried yet. Stay away. No price is worth this place. Too bad as the owners are sitting on a gold mine if only it were ran properly.

I honestly don't know, you'd have to call him. :/ but in Sooke there are a couple for sure, I would put your settings to show 'allow pets' option when searching B&B s in that area,... Gordon's Farm Stay in Sooke does,... that's about 40 min away from the saanich peninsula/Sidney area however. But if you're exploring the area I would definitely include Sooke, Hatley Castle just outside Victoria- we are staying at a B&B this weekend in Metchosin - even closer than Sooke - trying using the map feature in Trip Advisor to show you places that accept pets too :-) We have 4 dogs so I'm familiar with the dilemma:-) Just not travelling with any this trip.
