The house is not much to look at and is outside of the main town. The host, Tom, is very welcoming with his dog Dickens. His house is full of art, his own and a solid collection of Canadian artists. There are 4 bedrooms upstairs with a shared bath, very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and filling. We enjoyed our stay very much.

My husband and I just got back from our getaway, it was only a weekend but we got to visit both Smiths Falls and Merrickville.
At first we were upset we couldn't find a decent room in Merrickville, it was all booked up, so we chose the nearest B&B we could find, it was a great choice! it was only 10 min by car from Merrickville and the house was so artistic and beautiful!, so quiet! The breakfast was really yummy and the owner, Tom, was really nice to us chatting about art and his experience as an art teacher and trips to Europe. Thanks a lot for the amazing getaway!

We stayed with Tom for one night and he was a great story teller and accomplished artist. He made us a wonderful breakfast before we started our day. Very interesting man and he made us very welcome. He gave us advice on restaurants and attractions in the area.

A more charming host than Tom Holmes is difficult to imagine. An established and accomplished artist, he is ready to engage in conversation on virtually any topic you may bring up but does not initiate a discussion unless invited. In other words, always there when you need him but otherwise discretely in the background. His large four-bedroom home—tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished—is complemented by a collection of antique art works, acquired over the years, spread throughout the house. His own work is confined to the walls of one downstairs room which he calls his “gallery.” Unprepossessing from the street, the back of the house faces on a thriving flower garden facing a swimming pool and enjoys views of an extensive lawn bordering on the Rideau Canal. If you’re looking for a place in the Merrickville or Smith Falls area of Ontario that is less formal than a hotel, the Montague House B&B is the place to go. P.S. The breakfast does not disappoint.

Short & Sweet! It was the best GETAWAY only 1 hour plus a wee bit more from Ottawa city. Nothing fancy about house, rooms. Be casual for sure, Smith Falls is super nice & Friendly. MONTAGUES B & B photos I took for my memory album.., SPEAKS for itself. Owner is an artist and the grounds landscape is WOW where a perfect outdoor pool kept me busy for 6 hours, one of my spa atmosphere days. Reasonable! Bring your own drinks & snacks. Zero offered nor provided. Friendly owner and very busy with hands on property responsibilities. Perfect for me!

If you have even a single iota of interest in art, you MUST stay here. Not only is Tom an accomplished artist, but his collection and wealth of knowledge is worth the visit alone. You can expect a wonderfully decorated place, with an amazing view of water, and a lovely property. Breakfast here is amazing and Tom's cooking must reflect his great skill in art. I noticed several reviewers critiquing the cleanliness - not sure why? It's very clean! Additionally, the atmosphere and silence is perfect. You will be pleased with that. Just be sure you are comfortable with the bed size and be mindful of the time of year, perhaps. It made for a bit uncomfortable sleep - but I don't think Tom could be blamed for that (reflected in room rating). You won't be disappointed. Book now! (Be sure to call; booking.com is no good).

Nice B&B with a very welcoming host.

Tom was great company, with interesting stories and a very helpful host. As paddlers, we did not have a vehicle, he took the time to drive us to a recommended restaurant.

The next morning, we were given an excellent breakfast before starting out on the water.

As a paddle friendly B&B, I would suggest Tom mark the B&B from his yard/shore for clarity to paddlers.

Tom was a welcoming, warm and very accommodating host. We were a rather large family with very young kids (not the typical B&B guests) and Tom really made us feel at home. The location was ideal for us, on the water and not far from town. The grounds were large, lots of room for the kids to run and play and the swimming pool was an added bonus for them. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious!! Overall a great experience.
