We stumbled on this place almost by accident - it was recommended by another B&B which was fully booked and as we were getting desperate to book something (The U2 Concert meant that beds were hard to find!)....we called and booked over the phone without seeing any reviews or pictures...not something we would normally do but as we were touring in a motorhome when we booked, we did not have the luxury of an internet connection to check TripAdvisor!
Anyway, this place was described as very new and modern with a harbour/city view and just a 10 minute ferry ride into the centre of Auckland.

We took the 'leap of faith' and think we found an absolute cracker! The B&B is actually located in the affluent Devenport area of the city, right on the waterfront...directly opposite the yacht club. It is a 5 minute walk from the ferry terminal which gets you to the city in 10 minutes and is surrounded by boutique shops, cafes and restuarants.

This place didnt just have a "view" of the water ... its practically outside the front door.
We had exclusive use of 2 spacious bedrooms, a living room, a gorgeous brand new bathroom, all of which were self contained on their own floor and with its own front door - this is not a normal B&B!!
Every room is decorated with various pieces of artwork which Bo and Margaret have collected over the years on their travel's - Bo is a retired cargo ship captain from Sweden and this place is their purpose built retirement business.

Included in the price are countless goodies stashed all over the place - Fine Port, home-made biscuits and luxury chocolates...all are completely complimentary. The attention to detail in this place puts just about all of the 5 star hotels we have stayed in to shame.

Bo and Margaret are excellent company and spoilt us rotten during our stay. The upstairs of the property is where breakfast is served and offers a panoramic view through floor to ceiling windows around the estuary and over the city.
We were really very fortunate to find this place...and the guest book in the suite speaks for itself, page after page of praise is deservedly heaped onto the hosts and their efforts to make their grandiose home feel like your own.
You will really struggle to find a B&B which offer's half as much as this place for double the price...enjoy it while you can, as soon as its been advertised in some city-guides you will struggle to get a booking. ...and now that we have introduced Bo and Margaret to TripAdvisor, they will no-doubt find themselves getting very, very busy.

We enjoyed three fabulous days during our stay at The Captain's Landing. This bed
and breakfast is located on the beautiful North Shore area of Auckland, called
Devonport, just a short 10 minute ferry ride from downtown, and then a five minute
walk to the B&B.

The Captain's Landing overlooks the water, and so you get a great view of all the
activity, as well as the walkway on the water's edge.

The accommodation is really comfortable and elegant with a well appointed bedroom, a
spare room available to store your luggage, and a separate sitting room overlooking
the deck, and then out to the water. Breakfasts were served upstairs in the main
house diningroom which had an exquisite view of Auckland city and the surrounding
beach areas. The best part however was the lovely breakfasts prepared by the
gracious host, Margaret Ekman. Making use of organic local products where possible,
the breakfast was just exquisitely prepared and served with Margaret providing us
interesting stories and suggestions about Auckland, and how the B&B had evolved.

The Captain's Landing is a higher end B&B which offers excellent value, a great
hostess, and a good location with easy access to downtown. We would glad recommend
this B&B, and next time we are in Auckland, would
definitely stay there again.

I'll do this by answering four simple questions; who, what, where and why?
Who ?
Margaret Ekman who owns Captain's Landing with her sea captain husband Bo is the kindest, most hospitable, most thoughtful hostess you could possibly meet; unsurpassable even in New Zealand which is renowned throughout the World for its friendly, welcoming hospitality.
What?
At Captain's Landing you have a self-contained suite of rooms. With your own front door key you can come and go as you please at any time. The rooms are comfortably furnished, scrupulously clean, light, airy and well equipped. The bathroom is luxurious and there were fresh flowers in my bedroom. I stayed here alone for 12 days during the final stages of the Rugby World Cup - it was just as though I had my own home here. Every day Margaret brought down a huge tray with what she described as a "continental" breakfast. I don't know which continent it was inspired by. Certainly not Europe! I had meusli, yoghurt, several varieties of fruit, toast with savouries and jam, Danish pastries and a selection of teas and coffee to choose from. And if this wasn't enough Margaret also provided biscuits, chocolates and snacks. Supplies were replenished daily. She even put a bottle of my favourite beer in the fridge every day, having surreptitiously discovered my taste! This is what Margaret does. She goes out of her way to personalise your stay here, to make you feel special and pampered.
Where?
Devonport is as charming, quiet, elegant and sophisticated as Auckland is by contrast a brash noisy hullaballoo of a modern city. So if you want to be near it, but not in it then Devonport is THE place to be. Captain's Landing is very quiet at night. But It is right on the waterfront, just a five minute walk from the town centre with its pubs, cafes, restaurants and boutiques - and to the ferry with its half-hourly 10 minute trips across the harbour to Auckland city. If you time it right you can be in the centre of Auckland just 20 minutes after leaving your front door at Captain's Landing. Around Devonport there are beautiful and interesting walks in nature reserves and with spectacular views over the harbour, the Hauraki gulf and surrounding islands some of which you can reach directly by ferry from Devonport itself; or you can simply sit as I often did by the beach and watch the endless comings and goings of ships, ferries and yachts. A few relaxing days in Devonport is a complete New Zealand experience in itself, a microcosm. Unless you are a compulsive sightseer there's really no need to go anywhere else.
Why?
If you are looking for the standards of comfort frankly as good as any five star hotel but in a place which really feels like your own home, then Captain's Landing has it all. It is simply outstanding. So why not? Just go there - do it now !!

I used Tripadvisor extensively when planning our trip to NZ as it can be hard to find good places from abroad and, by and large, the reviews are fairly independent. When planning our trip, I hoped that Tripadvisor would help me find high quality accommodation that wasn't touristy and tacky. Well, full marks to Tripadvisor for bringing us to The Captain's Landing, easily the most luxurious B&B of our stay in New Zealand.

The accommodation comprises:

-master bedroom with a very comfortable king-sized bed and sky TV. There is a nice antique cabinet and the room is well appointed.
- sitting room with TV, fridge, little table, chairs, sofa and book-shelves. The sitting room opens out onto:
- private deck with table, chairs and sunloungers, overlooking the harbour
- smaller second bedroom with a standard (ie small) double bed
- bathroom with large shower of a quality that would not be out of place in a 5 star hotel.

The area is completely self-contained, which is nice.

There are no cooking facilities as it's not that sort of accommodation.

Margaret was a perfect host, leaving out lots of thoughtful goodies and nibbles for us. Lots of lovely personal touches that we appreciated. Bo picked us up from the ferry when we arrived.

The breakfasts were a real highlight too and we were sad to go. Margaret gave our girls a little Christmas present when we left, which was much appreciated.

Other reviewers have written about the location, so I'll just sum it up in one word: superb.

If you're thinking of where to stay in Auckland, don't look any further.

Thank you Bo and Marageret!

We have just returned from a month in New Zealand and one of our highlights was our stay in Margaret and Bo's beautiful home, by the waterside in Devenport. There were only two of us but we had the use of two bedrooms as Margaret never lets the other bedroom in the suite of rooms unless it is to friends or family. So we had what amounted to a beautifully appointed flat with a deck outside. Extras such as port, chocolates and cookies are always available in your room and every thing you could want has been provided. Five star hotels could learn from Margaret but could never compete with her attention to detail and wonderful welcome. Her breakfasts, served upstairs in her open plan dining/sitting room with 180 degree views of the water and the boats coming and going, were delicious. When we return to New Zealand, and we will, we will definitely stay here again. If you have a hire car it is perfect as you do not have to drive into Auckland, simply get the ferry from Devenport and in 10 minutes you are downtown. Perfect in every way!

If, like me you are a fussy traveller who loves comfort and superb service when on holiday, you'll love The Captain's Landing. I found it absolutely faultless. Bo & Margaret, the owners of this exquisite harbourside haven, seemed like old friends from the very start of our stay. The Captain's Landing is in the stylish, 'arty' suburb of Devonport, just a short scenic ferry ride from the very centre of the city of Auckland. The family-friendly guest accommodation is very comfortable, stylish and reflects the owners' lives of worldwide travel - Bo really was a ship's Captain! There are two double bedrooms, a beautiful contemporary bathroom crammed with goodies, a snug private living room with beverage-making facilities and even a decanter of sherry & a supply of chocolate treats. Outside, the smart, small terrace encourages you to sip your drinks overlooking the harbour. There were myriad thoughtful extras provided throughout our stay (including a chocolate bunny on our daughter's breakfast plate on our final Easter morning!) Breakfasts are generous, healthy and delicious with exotic fruits and homemade preserves, served on white linen, upstairs in a striking glass-fronted drawing room with views across the water to central Auckland. I normally opt for 4 or 5 star international hotels, but I am so glad we found The Captain's Landing and its delightful owners. Thank you Bo & Margaret! We hope to visit again one day!

My husband and I have lived at the Captains Landing for the past year. A great location, beautiful sea views and a short walk to the village. It is an idyllic place to stay. Margaret could not have been a better host, such a lovely person.

We had a perfect 2 day stay with Margaret at the Captain's Landing back in January before boarding our cruise ship in Auckland. The 3 room suite with an outdoor deck was immaculate, comfortable and had every amenity you could possibly want including homemade snacks and even a bottle of wine in the fridge. Our 2 breakfasts upstairs in Margaret's lovely dining room complete with a white tablecloth and silver serving pieces, included absolutely scrumptious fruit, muesli and yogurt then a hot entree - one day scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, the other a grilled cheese, bacon and tomato on toast. They were incredible - my mouth waters still thinking about them! My husband particularly enjoyed the music playing in the background while we ate. Margaret arranged for our transportation to the dock and could not have been more gracious and caring about us during our stay. Be sure to book a visit at The Captain's Landing - you will love it! Thanks Margaret!

We knew as soon as we arrived on our 2 night stay at The Captains Landing it was going to be special as Margaret greeted us like one of the family. Margaret and Bo's B&B is situated on the ground floor level of their immaculate and stylish home and is actually a suite of rooms. We loved the second bedroom to enable us to use as a dressing room so as not to clutter the main bedroom with suitcases. The living room has a good sized fridge and small ice compartment ( disguised as a cabinet) where a chilled bottle of wine awaited us ( how we appreciated that after our journey) We sat outside on the decking with the warm evening sea breeze and relaxed immediately! Wow!
We can't think of a single item which isn't supplied at Captains Landing, the attention to detail delighted us. There are DVDs, books, magazines, refreshments, fresh milk, chilled water, excellent toiletries, wonderful pieces of furniture, fine bedding and a very comfortable bed. We were asked what time we wanted breakfast ( Margaret is such an accommodating hostess so if you have a very early start the same breakfast is served regardless of time) We enjoyed the best continental breakfast we have ever had ( also available scrambled eggs and smoked salmon) whilst looking out at the most fantastic views of the sea overlooking Auckland city through the floor to ceiling windows. We enjoyed the homemade muesli, seasonal fruits, croissants, pastries, toast and marmalade. Coffee and tea served in silver pots and crisp linen napkins and tablecloth. Beautiful And stylish presentation is something Margaret obviously excels at and it is something we miss so much when staying at larger hotels, which can be so impersonal and clinical. Don't want to write too much about all the little finishing touches as would possibly spoil the lovely surprise for future
guests. Great location - easy five to ten minute walk to catch the Ferry to the city and back and Devonport shopping also an easy stroll. Lots of smaller shops ( many close at 4pm though) and many places to eat. We were lucky to have a hire car so on our second evening we drove around the nearby area and across to the beach on the other side of town. We were so glad we decided to spend our few days in Devonport and not in Auckland CBD area for our two night stay. This B&B should certainly be number one in the ratings and isn't probably only because it's a small business ( one couple per stay) so the trip advisers reviews aren't as frequent. Can't recommend it highly enough and so look forward to returning again. Many thanks Margaret for a truly wonderful stay.
