With stunning architecture, lush gardens and interesting art, Mae Nai gardens provides a setting that is instantly relaxing. Accommodation is in the form of spacious, clean and secluded bungalows, with a communal (but very quiet) pool and breakfast area.

We loved sitting by the pool and wondering around the grounds. We also enjoyed exploring the local area, which is possible via bikes guests can borrow - there are lots of lovely local cafes and restaurants. The whole area felt extremely safe and welcoming.

Pop and Ian provide a nice, fresh breakfast of coffee (or tea), fruit and eggs (Thai breakfast is also available). Both are fantastic sources of information about the local area, and you really get the sense they want every guest to enjoy their time with them to the maximum.

We would highly recommend and will definitely return if we every have the opportunity.

When you arrive at Mae Nai Gardens you feel instantly at ease thanks to the welcoming, professional and laid back nature of Ian and Pop, who do a wonderful job running the place. The bungalows are set in lush gardens and offer plenty of privacy.

The gorgeous swimming pool is one of the nicest I have ever swum in - a good size for having a proper swim, with plenty of comfortable loungers for sunbathing or reading in the shade of the palm trees.

Ian and Pop make wonderful hosts, providing guidance on how to get the most out of the local area.

Paradise!

We had the most wondrous six days of hospitality at this beautiful family run resort. Pop (and housekeeper Galita) took care of us like family and attended to every small detail, including making recommendations for a local masseuse.

Our living space was perfect. We stayed in the smaller of the four villas, the one bedroom villa built in the traditional Thai style - with stunning architecture - high ceilings and rafters 😍😍😍, wall to wall windows.

Beautiful decor, all around the property, the gardens are something to behold. It too cold for us to use the swimming pool but the area around a swimming pool has zen spa like tranquility. The breakfast served every day was delicious. We will return again.

It’s been two years since I was last in Thailand, so it’s great to be back now that restrictions on tourists have eased.
Mae Nai Gardens has proved to be the ideal venue for a return trip - it’s in the countryside close to Mae Rim, Chiang Mai, and has beautiful tropical gardens with only a few villas which are attractive and well spaced - ideal for these difficult times.
There is also a welcome and secluded swimming pool, just the place to relax on a sunny afternoon.
Hosting has been friendly and relaxed. Pop, the owner, knows the area well and can recommend the best places to visit or to eat. In fact there are a couple of good restaurants within walking distance, although a car or motorcycle will extend your range of choice.
Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for an uncrowded location for relaxation and good times.

We spent Christmas in Mae Nai Gardens, and what can I say it was lovely!! Ian and Pop are the warmest hosts and always super helpful with recommendations about what to do in Chiang Mai. The resort has the most fantastic gardens, the most beautiful pool and the comfy and super spacious apartments with very tranquil views.

We were very happy with our experience and we really hope to come back! It’s the ideal place to relax and enjoy the views! Thanks again, Cris and Layla!

We came here the countryside in order to do a little "silent" retreat away from the city. We felt very welcome by the Thai owner, Pop when we arrived. He was friendly and made us feel comfortable for check-in. We went out by motorbike during afternoon and came back in the evening. Everywhere in the hotel is very dim and dark. We used the swimming pool around 5:30 - 6pm. We had to find the light at the swimming pool by ourselves. Only few little lights around the pool but no light at all in the swimming pool. Asked the owner, but the Thai owner was not there. Only another owner, Ian was in the kitchen. He just told me how to open the light instead of finding solutions for us. No greeting, I didn't feel any welcome at all. There's even no towel for using swimming pool. Anyway, he just replied the light in the pool doesn't work. He cannot help. Okay, nice reply!! I tried to read the book under the light, but it's impossible as the lights not useful. So I walked to the dining area, the place where we checked in, would like to sit down comfortably to read the book. Then I was told by the owner, Ian, the area is private. I am not allowed to stay there. Wow, very shocking! After I just realised the dining area is their house! The photos they advertised on Agoda are misleading, they put the photos like the area is part of hotel's facilities that we can use as common area as a guest. So I felt absolutely shocked and felt misled by the photos they provided. He told me I have the light in my "Villa" which is just a bedroom for me instead of Villa. I definitely would not like to stay in the bedroom all night long. It's even not the bed time yet. There's even no table, no chair in the bedroom. The terrace is absolutely dark and dim as well. Obviously, there's no where else can enjoy.
At the end, we called Agoda to cancel another two nights. (We are supposed to stay 3 nights)
Another tip is, here absolutely not a good choice if you wanna stay away from noise and just want to be tranquil in the nature. I understood it maybe New Year Eve, the music from the village was until 1am, but I didn't expect the music start again 6:30 in the next day. I feel very unlucky for what we experienced. The only nice indoor area is their dining room, which is their house with nice art decoration and comfortable sofa (look like, as we never had chance or had a right to enjoy it). What a shame! The style they running the hotel is not up-to-dated. No concept of "common area, disappointing!

I am very disappointed with these comments. If you search through previous reviews you will find that this is the only one of this nature. I am particularly disappointed that at no stage did the guests, despite opportunity, discuss any of their concerns with us. We are a very small resort, with only four villas, and we make clear in all websites that publicise us that we are not a full service hotel - we provide bed and breakfast villa rental. In this specific instance, the guests arrived on New Year’s Eve, one of our busiest times. They arrived before check in time, however, as usual, they were welcomed and given information about our resort, then, when it was ready, they were shown their villa and they indicated that everything was fine. The writer of this review came to me in the evening and asked about lights for the swimming pool. I told her where these were, and she subsequently switched on the lights. Later, I heard someone in our dining room, which is only used by guests during breakfast- it is in our own home. I asked the guest did she need any help, and she told me that she was looking for somewhere to read - she had no book with her. I explained that this was a private area except for breakfast, and there were several lights in her room - including two bedside reading lights. However, she told me that she would not be able to sleep if she read in bed. I said in that case there was nothing more I could do. For clarity here, there are a total of six lights in the main room of this particular villa, three of them portable. There are also lights on both terraces. And there is a two seater sofa in this villa, plus table and chairs on the terrace which can be moved inside. As visitors to Thailand know, New Year is a very special time for Thais, and they love to celebrate with music and with fireworks. Yes, of course it was noisy in the area, although none of this was coming from within the resort. We can not control external noise- nor would we want to at New Year. It is one special night of the year for celebration. And yes, some locals started up the party again fairly early in the morning. Rather then come to us to discuss their concerns, these guests cancelled the next two nights of their three night stay. We did not insist on payment for the two extra nights they cancelled, as was our right. We took the position that they were unhappy and were not about to add to this. However, it is interesting that they did not rush off, but stayed on beyond the check out time, midday, despite our having told them that there were new guests arriving at 2pm. When they complained that they could not get a ‘grab’ taxi, we arranged for a driver to be there for them promptly. Altogether - not a happy experience for either party, but for us this is the first time we have had such a response from any guest. We hope it is the last!

If you look for a quiet place made of villas in the middle of a beautiful tropical garden : Mae Nai is a place for you. Added to that is the warmful and personal welcome of Ian and Pop. They are discreet but are always here when you need them, they are full of advices (especially when it comes to the best places and restaurants to visit around), they make you feel at home so that you almost forget that you are in a hotel. Bravo for the design of villas which are all different, and for the biodiversity of the garden! We will definitively come back!

We had two units, the more modern, standardized unit with two bedrooms and a kitchen for my daughter's family with kids and the smaller one bedroom cottage for me. All are un-airconditioned but still comfortable because of the screened windows and cross ventilation with the overhead fans. My more traditional cottage had bamboo mats, nearly full length screened windows and doors, and an outdoor porch with the kitchen sink and refrigerator. It was so charming we spent most of our time here when not sleeping. Anna and Jenna and kids loved the salt water pool. Ian and Pop were welcoming hosts and very helpful. I enjoyed talking with Pop about the history of Mae Nai Gardens and their split life between Thailand and Great Britain. The grounds are profusely landscaped with papayas, pompelo, banana and other trees, flowers with a lake and salt water pool. The main house where Ian and Pop live and where you have breakfast is a stunning wood and stone structure surrounded by art and a koi pond. They arranged a car to the airport for me at 4 am to catch a 6:50 am flight, and the driver was very reliable, waking me up at 3:30 when I overslept. This was such a welcome change from noisy air polluted Bangkok. I finally felt like I was in Thailand. Their restaurant recommendations were excellent. Only giving this 4 stars because the internet access was lost at a very inconvenient time (trying to arrange boarding passes for my flight and contact Tom in the California for my travel logistics (had a delayed connecting flight)). I was finally able to get my personal hotspot to work using my unlocked phone and SIM chip I bought in Thailand while waiting for Pop to return with his personal hotspot. Had I not been needing the internet so badly at this particular time the loss of internet would not have been such a negative. The other negative was the night before I had to leave there was loud pulsating music from some undetermined source that kept me awake until midnight despite ear plugs which was bad given my 3:30 wake up time the next morning. This was the only night where I heard this so don't know if this was very unusual. It seemed to be an anomaly because otherwise all you hear are birds including crowing roosters since you are in the countryside.

Thank you for your review, Christina. We’re pleased that you enjoyed your stay of two nights. Your daughter and family also enjoyed their week with us. I’m afraid that the internet problem was beyond our control, caused by work on electricity cables in an adjacent street when the workers inadvertently cut a cable belonging to the phone company. We’re certainly happy that your overall impression was positive.

What an incredible place to stay! The photos don't do it justice. Mae Nai Gardens is stunning. Beautiful landscapes. Warm hosts. Peaceful retreat. Chic surroundings. True hospitality. I recently returned for my second visit after 7 years away. It was special the first time and the second visit was pure magic. Their location outside of the big city makes for an incredible stay. The landscape grounds are immaculate and display beautiful pieces of art. Each cottage is clean and serene with its own unique design. I loved sleeping with the windows open so the fresh air could drift in. What a treat to wake up surrounded my nature. You can tell that a lot of thought and care has gone into the design. The pool is fantastic. It is like an oasis. Once again, a lot of care has gone into creating this. I arrived solo for the first night. It was very handy having their driver pick me up at the airport so I could run errands, enjoy lunch at the nearby Four Seasons, then head to Mae Nai Gardens. My boyfriend arrived the next evening with a car otherwise I would have availed of their driver for the entire trip. That is an excellent option to have. Just ask Ian & Pop to arrange this ahead of time. There were lots of ways to fill my days... in fact, I wish we could've stayed longer. Guests can enjoy the rural landscape with a walk in the nearby rice fields, visit a beautiful temple, enjoy the Four Seasons rice terraced gardens for lunch/happy hour/dinner, lounge by the pool, or take the mountain bikes for a spin. There are some excellent restaurants in their vicinity too. I didn't expect such highly designed garden restaurants! One even had a proper river and waterfall. Just ask Pop for recommendations. Since Mae Nai only serves breakfast, be prepared to grab your own meals, but that is easy to do with your own car or the resort driver. Just plan ahead. You are in for a treat. Another great idea was booking a trekking day trip. We booked a private tour which picked us up and dropped us off after an exciting day of hiking to waterfalls, exploring gorgeous scenery, and bamboo rafting down a river. In the future, I believe Mae Nai Gardens will also offer hiking trips for their guests. That would be great as we would've gladly done more hiking especially around the Mae Rim area. Ian and Pop can also book a cooking class for you. That is next on my list as I have heard they are fantastic. Thank you again for a great stay! See you again soon.
