We had an amazing experience visiting Iwokrama! We stayed 3 nights, hiked Turtle Mountain Day 1, Turu Falls Day 2, and Canopy Walkway at Atta on Day 3.
Michael Patterson helped us with booking and organize all the details so that we were completely set up with all transportation, accommodations and activities prior to arrival. I recommend booking through Michael for the best experience:)
Staff are helpful, caring and friendly - frequently checking in to make sure we are comfortable and have everything we need.
Cabins are really cute, clean and comfortable “glamping” with ensuite bathroom. Comfortable beds, but the pillows were really thick and gave us sore necks. We. ended up sleeping with no pillow after 1st night. A more flat pillow or ones with less stuffing would be great for future;)
Guides were fantastic - knowledgeable about all the plants and animals, great at spotting and hearing them, helping us through tricky parts of the trails that were slippery/flooded. We felt safe and cared for.
Food - every meal was buffet style with different options. All of the food was tasty and not spicy. But we always had pepper sauce at our table so you can add what you like. For a camp style lodge the food was better than I expected and we were very well fed:)
The grounds at the lodge are well kept and the atmosphere is calm and relaxing with beautiful views of the Essequibo River. We loved our stay and plan to return :)

A delightful visit to Iwokrama. Our agenda was well planned and executed with much kindness and immense generosity. Iwokrama's care filled guides were knowledgeable and well skilled as we boated on the Essequibo and over rapids; trekked through Iwokrama's forests and up Turtle Mountain; opening our eyes and hearts to the immense diversity of Guyana's flora and fauna and the awe invoking beauty of its lands and waters. Highly recommended .

We went for 3 nights in the first week in August. 5 adults and 3 kids (4, 3, and 2 yrs old). We had 3 cabins. We hiked Turtle Mountain, did Iwokrama Canopy walkway, night Caiman tour, lots of boat trips and other hikes. We were very well fed and taken care of. Our guides Marci and Leslie went above and beyond, we would not have completed Turtle Mountain without them. The boat drivers Colin and John were fantastic. Dawn served us delicious food. The cabins were clean, well appointed and spacious. It was the end of the rainy season but there were surprisingly few mosquitoes. The day we were to fly back to Georgetown our flight was delayed for several hours and we were able to stay in the cabins, were fed an extra meal and staff kept us updated on the flight status. Highly recommend the lodge. The other lodges in the area were definitely not at the same standard.

Very poor communication and management. Lodge has such potential with its activities and location but it just is not achieved.
Our initial flights to Iwokrama were not booked, despite us booking 10 months in advance. This meant we had to go to Lethem and drive to the lodge. The car we drove to the lodge in was a random person from Lethem. He was very nice but his car was not fit for purpose as it would not fit both my husband and I. One of us had to sit cross legged for the 3-4 hour bumpy journey to fit and we both have bruised knees and backs to show for it. It also cost us about $600 USD more to take that way to get to the lodge. Our suitcases also had to be wrapped in garbage bags and put in the back of the Ute.
We were not told that the return “shuttle” flight would result in us waiting at a small town airstrip for 3 hours. We were informed the “shuttle flight” would stop at other towns to pick people up but not that there would be a significant wait time. The too small car and the drive from Lethem would have almost been a better option.
Once we got to the lodge, no one showed us around our room or the lodge itself or explained how anything would work. We were given a key and told to come back later to discuss activities.
We had requested specific activities and when we got there, these had not been booked. The manager dealt with this quite well, including making some amendments to our schedule to accomodate them. However, we had to do a night tour without a guide and were required to pay full price for it.
The meals ranged from ok to good and there was always plenty of food. Two meals were cold, despite them just having been served.
In terms of positives, the rooms were good. They were comfortable and had a powerful fan. There is no hot water but this was fine. The rooms were very clean. The grounds are well kept and the activities are great. Our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
However, management of the facility lets it down. Other than our first interaction with the manager, he otherwise seemed very disinterested and unhelpful. It appeared as if his goal was to make every interaction as difficult as possible so people asked him less questions. The organisation of the trip was also very poor.
The lodge could be improved greatly by improving its pre departure communication and the communication at the lodge.

Iwokrama is primarily a research station but offers good tourist accommodation. You are put up in bungalows facing the river, with a nice breeze in the afternoon. The bungalows have private verandahs with hammocks that are very comfy. The rooms are clean with screens to keep out insects. We were there as part of the Guyana Nature Experience run by Wilderness Explorers so our stay including walks and boat rides with a guide to see wildlife. Alex, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the area and we saw a lot of wildlife with him - a cappuchin bird in the bush and on boat rides howler, black spider and squirrel monkeys; Amazon tree boas; green iguanas and black caiman. Tanagers hang out in the outside dining area and there are lots of birds on the property, as well as a resident black caiman, Sankar, in the river. The food is good, and Iwokrama is a very pleasant place to hang out.

A tranquil and very comfortable stay in one of the lodges, during dry season. The dining area was wonderful, an open sided breezy building built in the traditional style -we really enjoyed the birds and bats flitting around as we ate. We had a very knowledgeable and attentive Amerindian guide who shared knowledge of the plants and wildlife, as well as amerindian cultures, all of which was fascinating. We saw Amazonian parrots, scarlet macaws, red and green, blue and gold. We saw toucans and a toucanette. We saw a tree frog, giant river otters and giant river turtles. We saw a red rumped agouti, black spider monkeys, red howler monkeys. We saw bats, herons, swallows, kingfisher and just missed a tapir. We saw spectacled and black caiman, hanging out by the jetty. It was a great privilege to see so many creatures, and our stay was only marred by the persistent smoke from smouldering wildfires. This and the drought meant that we couldn't get to some locations on the river and the dry forest meant it was harder to approach animals as the leaves made a lot of rustling.

We spent 3 nights here as part of a 3 & a half week trip around Guyana. . The Iwokrama River Lodge is situated on the banks of the Essequibo River very near to where the Georgetown to Lethem Highway crosses it at Kurupakari rapids. . We drove there from Surama Lodge, stopping off for a drink at Atta ( where there is a forest walkway ). . At the time of our visit there were forestry operations taking place in the vicinity of Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve ( Hope they are under control ) & bulldozers were clearing a 30 - 40 ft margin either side of the highway for several miles . This may be an occasional operation as where the margins are untouched the forest is rapidly moving across. . Whatever the reasons, it does impact on opportunities for bird watching which are usually excellent along the highway. . The Lodge is beautifully situated in a clearing in the forest with the Essequibo River curving around one side. . I thought the accommodation was excellent : large wooden lodges with fans, comfy beds, power points, desk & chairs. Also reasonable shower & toilet attached & a big verandah with chairs, table & hammock. . The visitor centre is large & on 2 levels with offices down below. Upstairs is the kitchen, dining area, relaxing area & bar. The food was good & plenty of delicious fruit juices to accompany it & tea & coffee " on tap ". . All the staff were pleasant & although we had our own guides with us we took an in house one with us as well. . We had a boat trip along the margin of Indian Island & saw very little except at the very end when 2 Blue & Yellow Macaws were sighted. . However, you can see many birds around the Lodge- even watching from the visitor centre is rewarding. . If you are a keen Bird watcher I strongly advise visiting the nearby Fairview Village where we saw many Parrots, Macaws & Toucans. . If you have a choice of accommodation I recommend that you avoid the lodges near the vehicle park which is on your right shortly after entering the Lodge Grounds. It was quite smelly around there & noisy at times.

Greaves bus took us to Iwokrama Lodge. We were picked up on time at the meeting point and took some tours directly. For one night, meals and 3 tours we paid 962$ for two. Our cottage was clean and cozy - overlooking the river. Food was really plentiful and the staff was very friendly. After our arrival we are initially turtle mountain. The hike was not so strenuous and we had a great view of the countryside. We haven't seen animals. In the evening we did another boat tour to observe caimans. We were accompanied to both tours by a young woman who unfortunately was too quiet and didn't tell us much. The next day we drove to Atta Lodge to visit the canopy walkway. Unfortunately we were not there early in the morning, so we did not see any birds. Directly at the lodge, however, we could see isolated birds. After the tour we were driven to the bus - near the ferry - which picked us up as planned. Overall it was a nice stay. Communication in advance was good, food was good, staff friendly and the environment is very nice. The tours were well organized.

This was our first stop on a 2 week tour of Guyana. The staff were really friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable about the wildlife in the area. Our cabin was rustic and spacious and clean. I was a bit surprised and concerned that the rooms were not air-conditioned and only had a free-standing fan bit I needn't have worried as the temperature dropped pleasantly in the evening and the fan was quite sufficient. The food was mostly Guyanese dishes which we really appreciated, all buffet style and a lot of it. Wildlife was plentiful and I would suggest a 3 night stay to get the best from the place.

We stayed here for three nights as part of a group. Most of us had reasonable accommodation but some of the group were accommodated in less than satisfactory rooms due to overbooking. Make sure that you check the booking to make sure you get what you are paying for. We were lucky to have one of the freestanding houses and the electricity stayed on for the entire time which was not the case in the lesser standard rooms. It was extremely hot and there was a pedestal fan however not overly helpful. There is no hot water but given the outside temperature it wasn't needed. I felt that there were some little things that could have been better looked after like doors coming off cupboards etc. The staff were lovely and the food excellent and there was a bar. We did not see a huge amount of wildlife but did do an excellent but challenging walk to Turtle Mountain. The river is amazing and the place could be exceptional with a little bit of attention.
