Stayed here for 4 nights as our base camp to go see and do the sites of the West Macdonnell Ranges. With the pay for 3 nights stay 4 nights, it worked out to be $47 (unpowered) per night.
In the unpowered section you have a big gravel area where you can set yourself up in, keep in kind that unpowered area doesn't have taps for you to connect to, so fill your tanks from one of the powered sites before setting up camp, the area is quite level.

There is a nice new camp kitchen located in the unpowered area equipped with BBQ's, fridge, sinks, 5 toaster, kettle and a microwave plus spring water. (Unfortunately this area also gets used by the freeloaders that camp down the road)

The amenitie block is nice and new also, kept quite clean
Once again, my pet hate in amenities is floors that don't slope correctly and the changing area in the showers ends up saturated (this shouldn't be a thing in this day and age)
The free loaders also seem to just drive in and use the amenities.

As for the communications, there is No Telstra signal, There is Optus signal but its incredibly slow, there is free Wi-Fi but the signal in the unpowered section keeps dropping in and out.
The Wi-Fi in the reception building isn't much better and is slow.
No television signal either

Can't comment on the restaurant as it expensive and we didn't dine there.
They do have a small selection of groceries and a Bar

Considering its remoteness, this hotel/motel is very good. It has a captive audience, so to speak, but still provides good service.

The rooms are small and very tired, but I read from the management reply below that they are refurbishing. The carpets should definitely go, and be replaced with something more easily washable. It’s very difficult not to bring in some of that red dust. But everything in the room worked, nice hot shower. No TV or a WiFi.

We visited in the summer, so the complex was very quiet. Yet still the dinner was delicious. We had the stuffed mushrooms, and they really were excellent. I have no idea how they run a first class restaurant in the middle of nowhere. It was also very cheerful and friendly. We all sat and watched the Melbourne tennis and had a good chat with a group of visiting Austrians.

The wines were good, but do choose something opened that day, or that needs to be opened. Otherwise, with so few visitors in the summer, they sit around for too long.

Breakfast was excellent. We just had the continental, but you could order all the usual hot stuff to be freshly cooked. Excellent. Coffee and tea on tap.

There’s a nice seating area outside the restaurant, with a view of the river and cliffs, but we didn’t linger as we were plagued by the ubiquitous bush flies.

There’s a little shop selling essentials, such as hats and all sorts of anti fly gear!

Hi janthefan Thank you for taking the time to post a review and rating of Glen Helen Lodge. You are indeed correct, we took over operations of Glen Helen Lodge not quite two years ago and have spent a significant amount of time and resources improving the services which unfortunately are not visible (power, water etc). Our focus is currently on improving the rooms, which are being painted, with carpet and other improvements to follow shortly thereafter. We are so very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your meals in the the restaurant - our kitchen team indeed work hard to provide meals that you would be happy receiving in any city or location. We do hope you come back to visit us again soon to see how the property is progressing. Kind regards Amy

This is the only accommodation in this area and overall, the room was small, bed fairly firm and our slider door to bathroom didn’t work well so the outside light shone through the bathroom window all night. No TV in room, you can’t drink the water, only very limited Wifi at reception. But, view is beautiful, staff are friendly, there is water available at reception for hot drinks or to brush teeth. Included breakfast was amazing! Choice of several hot breakfasts and continental with fruit, cheeses and meat, cereal, toast etc.
Free parking close to your room. Laundry available and unique things to do in area-just 10 min. Walk to gorge.

Peaceful comfy stay right in the heart of the west Mc Donnell ranges so perfect for visiting all the gorges.
The room was newly renovated and very modern with everything we needed to make for a fantastic stay.
The breakfast was very good with lots of choice from fully cooked to fruit and cereals.
The only thing lacking was the dinner menu which really needed a few salads added to it otherwise vegetarians and people with issues were in trouble as it’s all pizza and chips. I should say that the staff were fantastic particularly Loui who went out of his way to make our stay perfect.
Strongly recommend staying here and also recommend you pay the extra for the escarpment view as it was well worth it!!

Having camped here previously it was good to have an en suite lodge room! Initially given no. 19 we moved to no. 22 because of an unpleasant odour. We were well looked after by the staff, Irish Marian in particular, but unfortunately the flies stopped us venturing too far outside or trying the swimming pool. The evening meal and breakfast served in the bar were both good and set us up for the next stage of our journey. I understand that the Lodge is under different management than in 2007 and may be due for refurbishment.

Glen Helen Homestead is an idyllic place to stay. We stayed during a time when they have very few staff and just before the NT borders reopened. The rooms are excellent and very comfortable. The food was a bit limited as the staff were having a night off however they provided steaks and hamburgers along with all the trimmings so we could cook in the camp kitchen. Excellent coffee and supplies available from the bar.

One week out from our arrival, Discovery Parks cancelled our booking as the ongoing renovations were not complete. This sent us into a panic as we had a three week trip to Central Australia planned and being school holidays and Easter, Alice Springs was booked out. Luckily for us, Mardelle the Manager at Glen Helen notified us a few days later to say that they would open Glen Helen for a short period so as to honour our booking and that they would also provide dinner free of charge to compensate for the mix up. This area is not to be missed. We had a newly renovated room that looked out onto the Finke River and is just a short walk to the breath taking Glen Helen Gorge. We had the place almost to ourselves. It was very hot during our two day stay and it was so fabulous to cool off in the river. There is a pool there but we didn't use it. The Gorge itself is magnificent and a beautiful place to swim. While the spectacular Ormiston Gorge, breath taking Stanley Chasm and Ellery Creek Big Hole are nearby, they were busy, so coming back to Glen Helen Gorge, where there were only a few people was a treat. Managers Mardelle and David are incredibly generous hosts. They were happy to have a chat and answer our questions, as well as provide advice and suggestions. The dinners that were provided were plentiful and delicious. The fabulous Chef is yet another bonus. There is a wonderful outside deck area which is a great place to have a drink and watch the sun go down. Glen Helen was a real highlight for us. The West MacDonnell Ranges are spectacular and I would recommend staying at least two nights at Glen Helen. I'm sure that when the renovations are complete, it will be very busy, but don't be put off by that. We are just so grateful to have experienced this magical spot at a quiet time. All the staff are friendly and provide excellent service and this just added to what was a truly wonderful two days. We even saw a dingo crossing the road as we headed back along the Namatjira Highway.

I have had 2x experiences with Glen Helen:
The 1st was making a reservation for an overnight stay. The booking was made 6 months ahead of the stay and made through their web-site. 18 days later, I reconsidered and requested a cancellation. For cancellations greater than 14 days out, their Ts&Cs state that all but 1-day's worth of the deposite is refunded.
Given that my stay was 1-day, I was out 100% of the deposite = $305. Really angry about that.
I since booked via Tourism Central Australia (they provide a great service). The onerous term is not included. See separate review

A good location and reasonable facilities. All was going well until we purchased the buffet at $39 per person. Avoid this buffet at all costs, the buffet consisted of two dishes and rice. We were told the buffet was Chinese but it bore no resemblance. The food was digusting and fellow diners sat in embarrassed silence.

We stayed in a newly renovated standard motel style room at the lodge. It was lovely. The renovation has been done to an excellent standard. The rooms are not large but are not cramped either. Beds and pillows are comfortable. They have done a great job of modernising the rooms without changing the footprint of the original hotel. Meals at the lodge were excellent. We enjoyed the Sunday night roast as well as an excellent cooked breakfast.

Hi Val, all of our powered campsites are fully booked out. This is one of the busiest times of the year. We do have some unpowered camping available however suggest you call the lodge to confirm space is available as that is also nearly full. Thanks, Tanya - Duty Manager

You will definitely not require a reservation for breakfast - this is anytime from 7am - 9:30am. Look forward to you visiting us soon! Regards, Tanya Duty Manager
