Excellent place to decompress. No wifi! this is good and bad. You will leave all of your stress behind and live a simple for a few days. Our package included accommodation,, nature walks, kayaking, birdwatching, watch the parrots come in to roast, and swimming in the Essequibo River. We did not regret our stay there. And you wont either!

I spent two nights on the Sloth Island. I summarize below the things I enjoyed on my trip:

Very first thing that comes to my mind is the hospitality of the people who work on the island. The owner, Mr. Ades, and the mangers/guides meet each person who disembarks personally with a big welcoming smile and a handshake. All throughout your stay (day tour or overnight) they aim to please. If you get a chance, make sure you sit with Mr. Ades and have a conversation to realize he is a walking library with vast travel experience and he would speak to you in any language you wish! The guides Claude and Rubin know their island inside out and you will find them always with binoculars and bird-books in hand. At the moment they spot a sloth, they would run after you to make sure you see this sight. The ladies who work there (or attached to the tour company, Dagron tours), Ann, Nalini, Nuen (spelling??) and others I have not mentioned here also are equally nice and helpful.

The rooms are spacious, very clean and very comfortable. They have all amenities one needs for comfort. Generator-powered electricity is available until late night.

The food served on the island is some of the best I have eaten in Guyana. I believe it is a conglomeration of different ethnic dishes.

I was lucky to see three sloths because I spent two nights there, but day visitors may not always spot them. I saw two on the island and then another while on the boat to parrot island.

Parrot island, where they took me on a boat, was very special; it was amazing to see flock after flock of parrots flying to this island just to sleep. Because of the setting sun, it was not easy to see their color, but their loud chatter easily gave away what they were. Instead of settling down in a tree they kept flying from area to area making the sky black over our heads. It was not clear what terrified them form their perch from time to time.

There was the option to kayak and/or take a boat tour to a nearby Amerindian village. It was interesting to talk to village people and partake in the festival of Holi (Phagwah) on the 12th of March. I did not go into the water while on Sloth Island because people had sacred me about piranhas and electric eels, strong current in rivers etc. in Guyana, but I saw several people swimming and enjoying the water. So, it can be done there without any problem.

I enjoyed early morning walks on the canopy boardwalk listening to birds and howler monkeys. I spotted many varieties of birds and three howler monkeys with babies. Claude & Rubin were right behind me every morning with their binoculars. I learned so much about birds, trees, leaves, flowers, barks and myths about star constellations from these two wonderful men. They wanted to make sure visitors learned about their culture and their Sloth Island.

One concern I had was this:

Early both mornings I was woken by loud music emanating from a near-by island. I felt very bad for this little resort because there may be other people like me who come to this island to escape loud noise in the capital city. I was reluctant to even mention it to the owner, but he said he himself had noticed that and was planning to do something about it. I hope it will work because I felt kind of sad that howler monkeys’ callings and birdsong had to compete with loud stereo music.

All in all, my two-night stay on the island made me appreciate what Guyana had to offer to visitors.

If you are into that rustic appeal with a bit of nature then this is the place for you. Transport to and from the island was later however that is to be expected (it's that laid back approach to getting everything done). However, on the island, everything is on time and the tour guides are more than helpful. Claude and Tony took us around the island and told us stories that made the hair on the back of your neck stand up. At night's Claude sang in his native language and told us of his experiences living on the island.
The food was AMAZING!!!!. I was with a group of 11 and we ate everything. Aside from this, the visit to Parrot island is a must.
SLOTH ISLAND goes down in my book as one of the best places to visit when in Guyana.

Transportation to Sloth Island Resort

From Georgetown, it took more than an hour by car to the port to catch the boat. The 20 passenger boat was old and uncomfortable. We sat on the bench seats and waited. The boat was cramped and sweltering. The boat does not leave until the boat is completely packed with passengers. We waited for over an hour until the boat was sufficiently packed with passengers on every bench from bulwark to bulwark.

Finally, the boat motor start. We headed upstream. The small boat continuously pounded on the water. The jarring would often bounce us off the boat bench. Fortunately, we were so crammed into the boat that we could not bounce out. The jarring ride on the boat lasted for 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Sloth Island Resort

1) The resort room: Bath shower water is cool water from the river. The water pressure in the shower was so low that it looked like the shower head was weeping. There was no shampoo, only a small soap for use and the bath towel was old.

2) The Resort does not provide any repellent to ward off the mosquitos and other insects.

3) There is no air conditioning in the room. The temperature in the day is nearly 90 degrees and the night is near 80 degrees. The room is equipped with an electric fan. During the night, the power went off and so did the fan. The room was hot and uncomfortable.

4) Not only are there power outages at night, but there are power outages during the day. Mobile phones, cameras and other items that need to be charged cannot be charged.

The first day at the Resort, there were only the two guests, me and my husband. I imagine a full house of guests would further diminish the availability of electricity and water pressure. I do not know how the Resort could effectively accommodate at large group of tourists.

5) For three days and two nights, nobody cleaned the room.

6) Every day breakfast, lunch and dinner are almost the same.

7) The Resort manager took us to see Howler monkeys. The Resort does not have a motor boat. We paddled around the entire island in a small row boat. It was 90 degrees and humid. It was a strenuous 2 hours of paddling by the manager and my husband. .

Two guests arrived one day after us. Their experience was the same as ours. Everyone agreed that the tour around the island was very unpleasant.

One important factor was the Resort manager. The manager tried his best to do his job and try his best to take care of his guests. In the evening the manager sang songs. During the day, the manager climbed a coconut tree to pick fresh coconuts for us. The manager gets an "A".

However, Sloth Island Resort does not have the infrastructure to properly receive guests. The three days and two nights on Sloth Island were a waste of time and a unpleasant experience!

I recommended that you skip Sloth Island Resort.

Claude is an exceptional guide/host.
He was very knowledgeable and passionate about nature which made our time even more enjoyable. He was able to answer all our questions. Claude is also a good story teller and was very enjoyable to listen to.He was very helpful in providing general information about Guyana as well.

The assistant guide and cook are friendly and customer service oriented as well.

Accommodations, food and service - all three were much better than we expected as this is a more remote location. I understand the hotel has been converted from a family home and it added to my enjoyment knowing a family had chosen to build their home on the island. The setting is serene.

Sand has been pumped up from the river and makes up a huge part of the grounds. I am not a 'barefoot' person - but enjoyed not wearing shoes while I was on the island.

The food was very good and the service was superb. The breakfast in particular was excellent and I ate more than I needed to because it tasted so good.

The room we had was very comfortable with the fans and mosquito net. Slept straight through the night.

Enjoyed seeing sloths, howler monkeys, toucans, a harpy and thousand's of parrots as well as other assorted birds.

Go on a weekday or Sunday if you want a less busy time. Our Sunday night stay was perfect for us.

The staff, Claude and Fidel, were great guides through the rain forest finding us exciting wildlife to photograph, including sloths, monkeys, and toucans. Aunt Sherry cooked us hearty meals to our satisfaction. The owner of the resort, Rafael, was attentive, responsive, and helpful in arranging the specifics of the trip, including transportation from within Guyana. To make our birthday celebration trip extra special, Rafael even arranged a surprise Amerindian culture show. On the excursion to Parrot Island to see parrots return for nesting, the glorious sunset sky was filled with chatting parrots. The Amerindian Village tour allowed us to interact with warm, welcoming, interesting people. We appreciated the peace and quiet of Sloth Island and the refreshing sleeps we had there. The adventure was exciting, yet restful. We are eager to return to Guyana!

My family of 4 (2 kids) stayed for 3 nights at sloth island in July. It was wonderful! And yes, there really are sloths on sloth island- we saw 8! The setting is lovely - sandy beach, nice, spacious sandy gardens for the kids to run and play, sand volleyball court, hamocks, and a lovely veranda overlooking the river. The food was plentiful and delicious and always included fresh fruit, coffee and tea. But the best part of sloth island was the wildlife - thanks to Claude, the wonderful and knowledgeable on-site Amerindian guide/host we saw 8 sloths, monkeys, tarantulas and about 75 birds. He is a nature-lover, birder, and excellent wildlife spotter. He was also patient and kind with our kids. We always felt safe in his hands and my husband enjoyed getting up at sunrise to go birdwatching with him. They have an elevated nature walk and a river trail a short ways into the interior of the island that Claude and Fidel (the other guide) will guide you through. We also enjoyed night-spotting birds and bugs. My kids loved jumping off the dock and swimming in the Essequibo and using the inflatable rafts provided. The accomodations are all you need- especially for Guyana standards - spacious and clean and comfortable. We paid more for less at other places. Our transport was arranged by Sloth Island (raphael) from Georgetown and it was reliable and easy - Claude was there at the dock in Bartica to meet us and take us across the river. I'd say the only negative was when we visitied the Amerindian village - it was interesting but lots of trash and untidy - not atypical for Guyana but a bummer to our family of nature lovers. That might be left off your list of things to do unless you are simply curious. Much thanks to Raphael and especially Claude - he made our time there very special and we will never forget him!

Unfortunately we only visited for a very brief time whilst on a boat trip along the Essequibo. This small island is beautifully equipt for travellers. We were made really welcome and enjoyed a beautiful lunch with fresh ingredients, served by friendly staff.
We were able to walk the short walkway but didn't see Sloths today.
Our guide Claude would have taken us on a short canoe paddle for more opportunities to see Sloth. However the tour had to move on.
We met some other tourists all of whom were extensively travelled and all felt this place was worth a stay.
We viewed the rooms you can stay in before we left and they were very comfortably furnished and very bright and cheerful.
We will certainly return. Many thanks to Dargan tours.

I enquired about booking when I was there this summer and you can book through Dargan Tours on the Internet. They arrange transport from Georgetown by mini bus and then a boat to Sloth Island. You can email them to check your dates.
