The Manor at Bickley is a bit of a gem. It has a slightly faded Victorian / Edwardian charm. The floors creak a bit, the furniture is eclectic and the last modernisation appears to have been some years ago, But that adds to the charm. And its situation in its own grounds is lovely. You wouldn't know that you were in a a busy south London suburb. Our bedroom was spacious, clean and quiet. The bed was comfortable and the heating instantly warming. The bath / shower room was slightly cramped but the water was hot and everything worked. The (mainly young) staff were friendly and helpful. Our dinner was excellent. The menu was not haute cuisine but offered variety and was beautifully presented. Our helpful waitress (also receptionist) rustled up for us excellent affogatos (not on the menu) . The breakfast menu meets most tastes. Our salmon and scramble eggs was just right. We would recommend this hotel to anyone (like us) coming from the West of England) and unwilling to endure the M25 twice in one day, or indeed as a base for exploring London.

We enjoyed a splendid Afternoon Tea gifted to us for Christmas. It was quiet in late afternoon so we felt a bit isolated in the corner of the dining room. However, we were well attended by the bar staff. We were advised that the sandwiches , and scones etc were freshly prepared so, as we had arrived early, there might be a slight delay. No problem for us. We sampled a pleasant glass of wine in readiness for the arrival of our tea. This was soon followed by the sandwiches, hot scones, jam choices, cream and cakes. The food was just too much for us, but was all very pleasant and proved to be an enjoyable 90 minute break. Will revisit in the Spring or Summer. However, we also plan to book for lunch or dinner as the dining room offers comfortable surroundings and the grounds have ample space for children to run around. There is a large electronic-gated car park.

Room was lovely, most staff were helpful and friendly but we experienced a blatantly rude, hostile manager/owner Graham. Not once did he interact with us. It appears he only enquires of the well being of his friends that often frequent the establishment. When he was around the level of service we experienced was non existent. Completely ruined our weekend. Would not recommend to anyone.

Hi Rebecca, Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback. We’re really glad that you were happy with your room. With regards to Graham, as you say he is an owner of The Manor and we do have a number of customers who have been visiting us for a long time and who Graham knows reasonably well. He doesn’t like to make a nuisance of himself with customers that he isn’t familiar with in case they are visiting us to enjoy The Manor’s peace and quiet (of which we are very proud). Apologies if you felt that you didn’t receive the same level of service - this was not intentional. Next time you visit, please feel free to introduce yourself and Graham would be more than happy to come and join you for a chat. We hope to see you soon - The Manor Team.

I had my wedding here in April 2024 and would not recommend at all. It started of great (Sept 2022) and we chose this venue as it was near to both mine and my partner’s family homes and was the biggest venue we could find in that area. It felt too good to be true as they seemed so flexible and accommodating so after going through things over and over again with Craig (sales) we decided to move forward.

Everything went downhill after we paid our final installment (Jan 2024). Many false promises that were given by Craig could/would not be upheld by Vee & Vicky (events). Could not do the decorations we wanted unless we hired it for 2 extra days (bummer but we move). Had to buy a generator as apparently they could not supply enough energy, had to buy extra outdoor weather protection products which was originally said that they would provide. Said we could have early access by Craig on the day and if no events the day before we can semi set up but then was told by Vee that it’s £500 extra each hour we need. 2 days before the wedding their oven “broke” and they did not get anyone to fix/replace it so my caterers and I had to change up our menu. Was told there would be cleaners/someone keeping the toilets clean during the wedding but there were no toilet rolls, toilets blocked up etc and no one sorted it out so our guests ended up taking tissue packets with them. There’s so many more issues regarding parking, walkways, upkeep of the rooms/grounds (to name a few) that were previously discussed but then completely disregarded by the team.

In regards to communication I can say Vicky and Craig were prompt and helpful as they could be given everything else mentioned above. Unfortunately we were given Vee as our events coordinator who my wedding planner and myself had to repeatedly try and contact with no reply/answers. Even when I had my last view of venue 2 weeks before the wedding there were a lot of things, my mum, my MIL and myself picked up on( things to do with safety & aesthetics) which he said he would get sorted for the day but none of which were done.

I truly did feel like this would be a wonderful place initially and it still could have had they stuck to what they initially promise/offer. It is also my fault for putting trust in them and expecting them to follow through. So I would advise anyone thinking of getting married here to get every single tiny bit put in writing so you’re not left feeling so stressed out in the final few weeks of wedding planning but can truly enjoy the experience it should be.

Response from The Manor, General Manager at The Manor at Bickley
Responded 5 Aug 2024
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for us. As you hired our venue as a dry hire, many of the issues you mention are outlined in your contract as your responsibility. Reading through your comments, it does appear that the majority of your issues are contractual. We expect all of our guests to be fully up to speed with their responsibilities prior to the day of their event , as we are with ours. As you are aware, The Manor team don’t organise or operate the dry hire events so much of this was out of our control. We do offer a fully managed service for weddings at the manor for those guests that would rather every detail is taken care of. All feedback is important to the team at The Manor but we are a little disappointed that this review is the first we have heard of your issues on your special day. Vee, Vicky and Craig all take great pride in their work and regularly receive glowing reviews from our guests. We are confident that any concerns you and your family will have had on the day will have been resolved immediately had they been communicated. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss all of your points in detail and the reasons for our response here. Please do get in touch if you would like to.

This is the first negative review I’ve ever left in my life.

My friend booked a birthday afternoon tea in this stunning location and it was an absolute delight of an afternoon - just what we needed after a long period of lockdown and not seeing each other.

We were the only ones seated in the large occasion room and so we had a fabulous time catching up and celebrating my friend’s birthday. Given that we are six professional ladies all over 40 with children (not present) the conversation was lovely but not offensive on any way.

Hence why we were shocked to be suddenly asked by the manager to “keep the noise down” as the hotel had “pilots on day rest” who mustn’t be disturbed.

Safe to say, this caused the atmosphere to sour and my friend’s birthday afternoon began to spoil. I say “began” as what happened next was beyond belief.

Having already been taken to task, the manager saw fit to send the bar man over to our table five minutes later as a young family was seated in the room. Despite the conversation all but drying up, we were then told again that we now couldn’t make any noise as there were other customers around too. Just to be clear, we were pretty much sitting in silence at this stage!

We promptly asked our “hosts” for the bill as we had been made to feel so unwelcome. It took the next 40 minutes and three attempts to get an accurate version, with the manager scampering off and leaving our poor (and very nice) waitress to deal with the upset caused by the poor treatment of our group.

The manager suddenly reappeared at the sighting of two new guests entering the hotel though, incredulously happy to leave is so upset and paying a hefty bill!

She finally acknowledged the situation and said “I’m sorry you feel that way”, and explained that the venue was only “soft opening” and as they had pilots staying they were trying to balance different priorities.

If we had know this, we would never have booked. Indeed the venue should not be taking any group bookings should silence be a requirement to their other guests!

After all of this only the birthday girl was provided compensation, which at least was the bare minimum of what we would have expected.

Will never be back here, beautiful and stunning venue but strange management with strange ideas of how to host people.

We visited Bickley Manor on the 21st August for dinner, we were 9 adults in the group, we all got together after almost 6 months reluctantly due to Covid. We explained our fear to the manager Graham while booking, we were re assured of the social distancing and the government’s guidelines being followed.
We were pleasantly surprised by the efforts the team made to welcome us, to make us feel comfortable and to offer us private room for our group.

We were there for almost 6 hours, thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere restaurant staff managed to create for us.

Very clean and well maintained venue.

What an amazing evening we had.
We will be back with an even bigger group very soon.

Highly recommended 👏👏👏👏👏

We checked in to Bickley Manor at short notice towards the end of October 2020. The staff were quick to show us around and show us the options for rooms.

We stayed in the main hotel for a night before renting the cottage for three nights.

Great family feel about the place. They were extremely kind and welcoming to all of us including my young son. We were a late booking so really appreciated how accommodating they were.

Cottage is a little “used” but I expect it to be so wasn’t a problem. Just needs a coat of paint. Which I understand is due to happen. It had no effect on our stay. The gate house cottage is private and felt homely. Great walks in Jubilee park, and large grounds of their own.

Thinking of staying for longer next summer.

Special mention to Sam and Vickey who were both so helpful and accommodating

Look forward to staying again soon.

My husband and I decided that we would go out for a walk, it was such a lovely day, as such he called the Manor at Bickley, asking if it was ok to pop down for a drink, the response from the person on the end of the phone was that they were very busy, not to be disheartened, my husband asked what time would be better for us to arrive, he was told about 3.30pm.

When we arrived, just around 4pm, we waited to be buzzed in, but had to ask twice before the gate opened.

When we entered the building, we asked what the arrangements were, we were told to go and find a seat, by a lovely lady, and that someone would be out to take our order. We found a nice table in the sun and waited, and waited, and waited. During this time we could see the see the same lady clearing tables and coming out to the balcony area, together with a gentleman, who we think was the manager, but noone came to take an order.

I might add although we do not visit very often, we find that there is always a nice atmosphere and the people are lovely.

However, on this occasion, after nearly 30mins, still not having been served, we left. We are local to the area and it is a nice place to visit, but we won't be back unless the service improves.

Very bad management. I had to cancel a re-scheduled booking for a family party as the owner (apparently) took over a month to confirm changes and the prices asked were suddenly doubled. The buffet offered was quite boring . Phone messages go unanswered and emails take time.

Everyone who attended this birthday gathering was very impressed with the venue, the food and the great service. Nothing was too much trouble and most of our guests had never visited before. Their verdict was "wow, what a hidden gem".
They even organised some beautiful weather which allowed us to spend the afternoon in the beautiful grounds (perfect for the children) and the most impressive 'Tiki Bar'. Thanks to Graham and his lovely team of hard working people! We will return. Pete & Tricia

I posted a review for the Bickley Manor Hotel very recently. My wife and I find it amazing, how " far down the slippery slope " the hotel has gone since we were there last. Albeit that it is years since we last stayed there. It would seem apparent that one reason the hotel remains in business, is that it raises revenue from hiring various rooms to clubs, groups and societies, and minor car parking fees from visitors to the near by Bromley High School, rather than dedicating its main function of being an hotel offering high standards of all its facilities. We were astounded that three previous reviewers, were full of praise, and yet there were no poor reviews, nor any average reviews at all. It makes us wonder how come ! Did they stay in a different hotel to ourselves ? From my experiences, this is the second worse 'hotel' that I have stayed at in many a long year. Such a pity that it happens to be in England. The web site linked to Trip Advisor shows numerous images of the grounds and wedding groups, pictures of the grounds and table settings. When I see this on the internet I always suspect that the management are hiding something. In this case it is true. Having said that, previous guests to The Bickley Manor have posted two photos of a tiny room - the foot of the double bed is only approximately 600mm from the wall. That is much more typical of the accommodation. Perhaps as we have put our honest reviews on Trip Advisor, then others who will subsequently stay there, may well be more likely to do the same. That might, just might, encourage the management to instigate major improvements. Better still someone with aspirations to develop an hotel could buy them out and start again from scratch.
Answer from Mandy H

Frank - the review I posted referred to my experience gained attending a Christmas dinner and disco function. The staff were really welcoming, the food was good given it was a restricted seasons menu for lots of party goers, and the music was good. Everyone in my party of 14 had a great night. However, none of us stayed overnight in the hotel so I could not comment on the rooms.

Hi Kat, as i was staying there over few days in a working week only, did not have a chance to meet any party yet, but i would follow Eileen W recommendation, as there are party quite often (as i heard). Ask this manager, or maybe his spanish lady-deputy, she is also very helpful..cheers Jiri
