After some recent challenging times I was looking for somewhere to reflect and recover in peace. Shangrila fulfilled every dream I have ever had of a true ‘retreat’ and my only sadness in writing this review is that I am not still there. I just returned from six nights in the Radha Oceanfront villa and I can’t praise my experience highly enough. Heaven and paradise are the two words that pop into my mind when I reflect on this place. Everything is perfect. The staff, from the moment of arrival are just delightful. They insist that each guest treats the resort like their home and they really mean it. I travelled alone and Shangrila was perfect for that. The staff were kind, discreet and exceptionally caring. The spa was also wonderful and I made the most of several treatments there. My room… well that almost leaves me speechless as it offered panoramic views of the ocean and I found myself transfixed by the beauty of the changing sea every day. The villa was furnished beautifully and was designed to catch the passing breezes. The bed was sensationally comfy and, as I had to do some work while I was there so the desk overlooking the fishing boats next door was perfect. That view was divine. The café was great and I loved the choices of vegetarian food (fish is available if you like it but the vegetarian options are delicious). My favourite meals were the Nasi Campur (accompanied by yummy coconut vegies) and the Shangila crepes with curry. The juices are really delicious and inexpensive. Apart from a short walk to the village, I didn’t leave the resort and 24 hours into my stay I felt every stress and worry drift away. Shangrila truly is a retreat. It offers a peaceful time in a stunning location and there is simply nothing better than that, anywhere. I will dream about Bali Shangrila until I return.

We entered the main gate and ….got showered with the flowers! This is how the wonderful staff at Shambala greets their guests.

Lush gardens, spa, yoga & meditation hall, comfortable accommodation, delicious food, sound of the sea waves … a paradise was found!

I can’t believe that there could be a person who would not fall in love with Shambala. The place is so unique; it is filled with the love and high energy. You will be fully rejuvenated and restore your roots even after the short stay there.

If you are fortunate enough, as we are, you could meet the owners, Ilona Selke & Don Paris. Just Google their names and you will understand how lucky you are to meet them in person.

A couple more words about the amazing staff. Dewi, Made, Ady and many others will make you feel at HOME. They accommodated our crazy dietary needs; and I tell you, the food is amazing!

So if you want to experience a glimpse of unspoiled Bali, then come here.

Our taxi stopped in front of a long pathway with a sign that said ShangiLa. As we walked some distance past an old wall we wondered if this was going to be the magical place we hoped for. When we reached the beautifully carved Balinese doorway and walked in, all doubt disappeared!. We were in the middle of a tropical paradise with meandering walkways with lush green vegetation and palm trees swaying in the fragrant breeze. Then the amazing gentle ocean opened before us.Bali High!
The sweetest employee, Dewi, greeted us with such welcome and love! And then showed us to our room right on the ocean. It was originally the Temple for the entire ShangiLa property. The most amazing hexagonal bungalow with a high pitched roof with several windows looking up to the sky and stars. Our room felt like the Royal Chamber of a Balinese Prince and Princess! We could not believe our eyes. A beautiful king size canopied bed with fine white mosquito netting (which we didn't need, but felt exquisitely romantic!). The walls were all glass looking at the ocean right at our doorstep. The bathroom had high glass ceilings and an amazing rock lined shower.
The people at ShangriLa were the kindest and most beautiful and loving we have ever experienced. The food was superb with a great selection for any taste.
And the owners, Ilona and Don, are truly amazing, beautiful and interesting people. I had left my computer in the Taipei Airport and Ilona took charge of making sure it was delivered from China to Bali for me. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
This was the trip of a Lifetime! To call it ShangriLa is truly and understatement.
Don't miss this experience that will remain in your heart forever. Thank you!

we spent 2 nights in Pura Kecil room,
the location was great, overlooking the sea.
But the cleanliness was poor, with ants in the bedroom and bathroom.
Take care, bring your mosquito repellent because the architecture of the room lets in mosquitoes.
If you like playing tennis, in the room you will find an electric mosquito racket, have fun....
Breakfast was basic and the dinner wasn't at buffet but à la carte with limited choice of courses.
The owner was not present and the staff not so friendly and helpfull.
We had a good yoga lesson in the morning with a teacher from outside, also snorkeling just in front the hotel was not bad.
I suggest to stay in the villas in front of the sea, because if you stay in the ones on the back you can hear dogs barkling or the noise of pigs coming from outside.
We discovered the second day a great villa just next to the ShangriLa, with yoga lessons, very clean, we had dinner there, much better. Prices affordable. If we come back to the north of bali we'll go there, it's called Prana Veda.

I brought a yoga group there and we were all really happy. Such a wonderful place - like Heaven on Earth (which "Shangrila" means...). The rooms are uncredibly beautiful. You rarely find such beautifully decorated places - with soo much love in really ALL THE DETAILS!!

And the Staff is so kind and heartful. I never saw something similar anywhere else. They are all really spiritual. We had the possibility to attend in a local fulmoon-ceremony in Bondalem's temple. The security man plays guitar and sings Mantras on the beach. The gardener is part of the local Gamelan orchester. And so on. The welcomed us with Young coconuts and a rain of flowers... We had a great farewell ceremony - which the staff gave us on our last day in Shangrila - with a flower mandala and mantra chanting and dancing... so gorgeous!

There is a beautiful Yoga-Temple (octagonal - as all the rooms / huts in Shangrila). And a nice pool under palms... And it's own Spa. You can go with the fishermen of the neighbourhood to a spectacular sunrise-dolphin-tour in the morning... we were blessed and saw nearly 100 dolphins that morning... (and even without dolphins it's absolutely worthwile).

For me Shangrila is really an Insider Tip. A place I recommend to everyone who goes to Bali. Also for individual trips it's highly recommendable!

And the food!! I forgot about the DELICIOUS food! It's vegetarian and sometimes there is fish. Such a variety and freshness. We LOVED the food!

In the sea in front of Shangrila you can go snorkeling.

There are three houses in front of the ocean. And more in the second raw. The oceanfront-houses are really beautiful! But you may need earplugs for sleeping (the ocean can be noisy...).

We were in Shangrila once with my family and this time with a yoga group. We loved both! And will surely come back.

My experience with ShangriLa was a dream from start to finish. I was picked up from Kuta by a lovely driver who made the drive to the quieter north shore a pleasure and was very informative.
I was welcomed by beautiful staff on arrival with flowers and made to feel right at home. The staff are all very friendly and did everything they could to help me with sight seeing, charging my phone, suggestions on what to do and what not to do. As a solo traveler being treated as a friend rather than a customer really made all the difference to my stay.
There are many things to do but I personally enjoyed the magnificent day spa where I was pampered and left feeling like I was floating on air. I went on a beautiful morning boat ride with a local fisherman to visit the dolphins and also a short trip to an incredible waterfall close by. There is a temple and lots of places to meditate and relax, inside the amazingly decorated rooms in which i felt like a princess, or outside in the gorgeous gardens.
Oh and don't forget to borrow a snorkel and see the colorful underwater world just off shore!
My four days at ShangriLa will stay with me forever. I made wonderful friends and left feeling lighter and radiating love. It is a magical place, magnificent in every way xx

The location of this retreat center is beautiful, right on the ocean. However, you are only going there for the place as there is nothing else around. Also, we had a very hard time sleeping as the waves are very loud. If you don't have your own transportation, you will rely on theirs, which, in our experience, was overpriced. We were there on our honeymoon and didn't have a great experience. We ended up leaving one night early. The first night we were there we did not have hot water. Apparently the propane was out and no one bothered to check it before we arrived. When we asked about it the next day the manager said it would be awhile before someone could come with more propane. My husband suggested they just trade out with one of the other rooms, which they ended up doing. The food was great but the "meal plan" way overpriced. Also, on three occasions they did not have the ingredients for the menu items and rather than bothering to tell us, just brought us the food without those items! Disappointing. Also, this was the only place we stayed in all of Bali that did not include breakfast with the price of accommodation. We stayed in many nice places for about $40 a night - at $80 a night I expected much better service. Finally, when we left there was a "mistake" on the bill - an all too common occurance in Bali. They had taken the price for three nights and divided it into two - making it look like a two night bill but at the three night price! We emailed the owners who did not seem too concerned. Finally, ee had asked for transportation to our next location and balked at the price they wanted to charge us. They agreed to forego their $10 profit. After hearing our complaints the owner's response was that they can't always give a discount on their transportation. Wow. This is a relatively new place and I hope their customer service changes to match the beauty of the locale.

It is a special place, peaceful and so close to the ocean that you feel embraced by it
Service always friendly and helpful.
Food is very nice and a good choice of vegetarian meals.
There was a group going on which did not at all disturb, it was rather inspiring.
We drove with our own car and could find the place easily enough.

Just arrived home from a yoga retreat at Shambala. Such a relaxing lovely place. It is located on the north coast of Bali so getting there is not completely simple. The drive is long and full of adventure but that is what makes it interesting. It is located in Bondelem a sleepy little non touristy village. (Another plus) the staff here are amazing! So happy and caring. The spa is lovely. I enjoyed three massages in a week. The traditional Balinese massages where wonderful. I stayed in a hut right on the ocean so the view was amazing. The sound of the ocean lulls you to sleep. Some may need ear plugs but that's not something that is bad. The rooms were relatively clean but because they are open to nature u will get some bugs and ants. Not a big deal. The grounds are lush, tropical and well maintained. The yoga studio is beautiful. The vegetarian meal were tasty but could use a little more variety. Don't get me wrong they were great but more nutritional meal planning ie proteins might be better. I can tell you I certainly didn't starve. The recreational toys need a bit of a revamp. Only two paddles for the kayaks so only two people could go out at once. Snorkel equipment in need of updating. The pool is was nice. The beach is not great. Don't expect to lay on the beach here. It is rocky and sometimes littered with garbage. Too bad. The staff really made a difference here. Because the resort is very small the guests get to know the staff well. I would recommend this place if you r looking for a remote location away from all of the chaos of Bali but don't expect a 5 star.

This pearl was a beautiful oasis in a quiet and unexploited area of Bali. The owners are conscious, caring friendly. The local staff so welcoming and warm. The gardens are heavenly and the rooms so creatively done down to the last detail. Food excellent.
Right on the ocean so water and waves ever present. Highly recommended.

Hi Tracy, Sounds marvelous! 5-7 days is enough for coming from Australia. For people coming from USA or Europe it is too short. I would suggest Pura Kecil for you if it is available. Don

Hi Chris, Not sure if this answer went out because it isn't showing even though I sent it. There are some interesting local shops and markets here, but it is not like Kuta or Ubud. It is old Bali in the North. We have a Restaurant, Spa and Boutique on site. There are some other retreat centers withing walking distance that also have restaurants. There are many places available via motorbike. We have heard that a neighboring retreat center rents motorbikes. We have a sandy beach from about June or July through December. By mid January, the waves get bigger and take the sand away. We normally have vacancy that time of year. Looks like we are open now. You can check on the website. bali-shangrila. We cannot put the full web address here. Sincerely, Don
