Our holiday on Haggerstone Island was the best, and our family will be thinking about it forever. The Turners and their amazing team are exceptional hosts. The fishing is sublime, the food, without a doubt, the best I have ever eaten, anywhere in the world, their knowledge of the reef and all the wonderful completely untouched locations extraordinary (they know a thing or two having lived on it for almost 40 years), the island facilities beautiful and the conversations so very interesting. Truly, life changing, we came back home better people.

Visiting Haggerstone Island is truly a once in a lifetime experience. If you want to swim and snorkel in some of the clearest blue water you’ve ever seen, spend your day fishing for coral trout, red emperor and spearfishing for crayfish then this is place for you.
The food was exquisite and the freshest of fresh. Every day you get to eat your catch that you fished for that day prepared in a variety of ways. I can honestly say that I immensely enjoyed every meal I had there. Everyone was also friendly and accommodating and will try to make sure you get the most out of your time there. I would absolutely recommend staying at this remote island resort, it is unlike anything else you will ever experience and not to be missed.

If you'd like to pay top dollar for a "luxury" resort and spend your time in a filthy room with mould ridden sheets and blood stains, then this is the place for you. A few of the staff were wonderful however a few were below par - laying on the couch scrolling on their phones, ignoring everyone as they waited at the bar to order a drink. A lot of the staff were wearing g-strings with see through tops - highly inappropriate. The fishing and fresh food was incredible however each day for lunch, it is presented with a side of pizza shapes. Back at the island, there are other bar snacks other than pizza shapes daily and lost clothing from the washing service. Yes the island is absolutely stunning however the price of the "resort" and service needs to be reflected.

We had high hopes for this holiday based on what is advertised. Sadly, Haggerstone Island is far from a luxury 5 star resort (and yes, being as remote as it is was factored into our expectations prior to going). We were not alone in feeling this way about our trip.

Sharing our experience in the hope to help anyone else who is looking to book. After our holiday, we saw a few reviews with a similar experience a couple of years ago however these seem to have disappeared. Had we known what it was truely going to be like, we certainly would not have booked here.

This island is one of a kind. The experience you have staying here feels so personal and exclusive. You’re free to roam the island as much as you want. You can snorkel, enjoy amazing food, relax, JetSki, swing, dive and loads more! The staff are all so nice and accommodating. Not once did I find myself bored on this beautiful resort island, the abundance of wild life and sea life is unforgettable. I highly recommend you go here, I would give a 10/10 if possible!

Brilliant authentic island experience. Thanks so much to Sam, Anna and the extended team for a once in a lifetime experience. The food, fishing and hospitality was 5 stars. A special thanks to Ebba who took time out of her day off to show me the island.

We visited Haggerstone island beginning of May 2018 and had great expectations as all the reviews in the past were really good. Unfortunately we had a completely different experience.
When arriving in Weipa from where we transferred to Hicks island the owner called me to ask whether it was ok for us to be picked up at Hicks and then stay on the boat for the entire day including lunch before actually going to the island. We clearly said that it was not ok as we were not prepared for a long boat trip as we both get really sea sick and need to prepare with medication. She said that did was perfectly ok and that we will be transferred directly to the island. Of course none of this happened and we were forced to stay on the boat until 5pm. The same happened all the following days. We asked to be able to have lunch on the island, but were forced to have lunch on the boat every day.
We were then showed to the Beach Hut. There are no walls, which might be romantic, shower and toilet are up a path, also open air. You have to "evacuate" your toiletries as they would get wet when it rains. You have to "heat" the shower yourself. It is being fuelled with coconut that you have to collect yourself as it is available around the hut. We never had a proper introduction to how things worked. When we complained that we still do not have warm water we were told that with time we will figure out how the shower works.
The place is full of mosquitos and the mosquito nets provided have wholes in it, so we ended up with uncountable bites. The next day we were told to light a fire in front of the hut which might help. (it did not). We asked whether we could move to another hut, but the owner was not very exited with this idea. So we asked another guest whether he would like to swap huts as he always wanted to explore the beach hut and he agreed. The Lagune hut is still open air, but has a proper shower and indoors toilet. The mosquito net still came with wholes, but the hut was not as run down as the beach hut.
The whole place has not seen any renovation for years. People might think this was romantic, we thought it was a rip off.
Breakfast was interesting. Nothing served before 8am. They do not have a proper coffee machine and although everybody was complaining about the bad coffee we do not think they contemplate to get a coffee machine.
Dinner was served in the restaurant and was ok. Nothing outstanding and usually prepared by the backpackers who worked on the island.
Lunch is always served on the boat. You eat what you fish. This really was the only positive aspect. The fishing was lovely although we were not really being helped by staff but rather by the other guests. ( we are both beginners when it comes to fishing). The boat was newly acquired and was very nice though. We were promised we could go snorkelling as well, but fishing is definitely the priority. If you are not a 100% fishermen do not go to this island. No matter what you ask for if it is not fishing no one would listen to you. If you wanted something you had to keep asking for it. Nothing was offered proactively.
This takes us to the main problem:
We were never treated or welcomed as guests. The attitude of the owners was very unpleasant. All they seem to want is your money, but they have no interest in making your stay a pleasant one.
They are running this island for many years and obviously are tired doing this. It would be so easy to make a lot more from this beautiful island and environment but they would need to invest and not only in money but mainly in treating the guest as they deserve.

Response from Sam T, Manager at Haggerstone Island Resort
Responded 22 May 2018
Dear Tahiti1967, Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay on Haggerstone Island. I can only say that we are very sorry that the trip did not live up to your expectations, and assure you that we do indeed care very much for our guests. With regards to the issues that you have experienced, as I was personally on the boat for your pick up from Hicks Island I would just like to confirm that we departed immediately and directly from Hicks to Haggerstone, and upon arrival as the tide was low I organised a staff member to make their way out to the boat immediately so as to escort you to shore. My understanding after asking you was that you preferred to have lunch on the boat - Mud Crab caught a few hours earlier if memory serves - and so I had the staff member wait on board in case you wished to depart early. I do again apologise that the Beach Hut was not to your liking, we do always try and emphasise both on the website and at the time of booking that it is the most rustic of all of our accomodations. As I understand it you discussed privately with another of our guests, who had been twice before, and informed the staff that you were both happy to swap and so we organised the change over. Ordinarily this is sometimes impossible - given that we are usually quite full - but in this case I am happy that at least you were able to have half your stay in a house that was more to your liking. With regards to a full size coffee machine, the simultaneous heating of water and and compression of air makes the power usage equal to around a third of our entire current usage on the island. This would require a larger generator, more burning of diesel etc. which we try and avoid for environmental reasons. I am sorry that this is the case and I can assure you that if we were in a normal situation, not over sixty miles from the nearest power grid connection, then I would absolutely have already made purchasing the coffee machine a priority. As it is we have to make do with filtered and peculated coffee. I would like to take the opportunity to assure you that we do care immensely about our guests, as you have mentioned we have been up here for a very long time and without enjoying the company of those who come to visit I do not think the resort would have been opened to start with. This being said we will of course investigate all of the statements you have made internally to see if there is anything that we can improve on. My apologies again for not living up to your expectations, if you were at any point willing to give the resort another chance then we would be more than happy to offer you the entire trip at half price/50% off in an effort to make up for the failed expectations. Kindest regards, Sam Turner Manager Haggerstone Island Resort

A stay on Haggerstone Island is the most amazing and unique life experience that everyone should add to their bucket list. I have never eaten such freshly prepared seafood, which tastes so good, ever before. The words Red Emporer, Coral Trout, Mangrave Jack, Barramundi, Painted Crays and Oysters, all now mean such a great deal more to me after this experience. Not only do you enjoy gathering these delicacies, but having them prepared so well, right in front of your eyes to enjoy, was simply awesome.
Accommodation is rustic. Don't expect tiled bathrooms and toilets. Our accommodation was 30 to 40% open to the world. No front door or back door. The bed / mattress was fantastic and covered from mozzies. Our bathroom was ten steps out the back on the decking a meter off the ground. The shower off a post with no walls, looking at the coconut palms and forward to the Beach Hut and beach ahead. The toilet was a further five steps along the decking and had a bar swinging door and two sides covering to chest height / shoulder height when seated. One could admire the view! The water at our hut was slightly colored and had a distinct taste.
Tip One. Get a bottle of water from the main hut or take your plastic water bottle from the flight over and use it / fill it when visiting the main house. The main house has beautiful water.
To say it again, the food experience is amazing. I don't think I have eaten so well for so many continuous days as I did during my visit, in my life. "Thanks Roy!"
The beaches, reef, fish, turtles, rivers and sand dunes were all untouched and stunning! The trip is more than a trip, it is a life experience.
Tip Two. We stayed in the Beach Hut which is open to the elements, wildlife and sounds of the beach and coconut forest. I slept reasonably well, but my partner was on edge with the lizards, noises and resident roosters. (You are safe from everything because of the mozzie netting over the bed) If you are a light sleeper, consider having a non drowsy sleeping pill on hand. Better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.
Tip Three. You will be on the boat a great deal (6 hrs or more a day) in reasonable seas. If you get sea sickness or vertigo, consider taking prescription motion tablets. Over the counter tablets didn't cut it / weren't strong enough for my partner.
Tip four. Use the repellents provided or take extra as mozzies and sand flies took to some guests severely. Luckily, I had not one bite.
Overall, despite the rustic accommodation which many may not enjoy, I did and I would highly recommend a visit to Haggerstone Island.
Cost is a difficult comment. It is pricey. But the island is remote and petrol and running costs would be high. I would and most probably will return when considering the cost. In saying that, it is so unique considering everything about it that for a first visit, the cost is reasonable.
Note. If you like to travel and have absolute 5 star accommodation, Haggerstone Island may not meet your expectations and satisfaction in a holiday. Haggerstone Island is much more than a holiday though, it's an experience!

From my life changing trip to Haggerstone Island 15 years ago and the annual trips since, I have always continued to be spellbound by the indescribable adventures of a Haggerstone trip. It is difficult to prioritise the exceptional life experiences that Haggerstone has to offer. If you really want to see what sets Australia apart from the rest of the world both in terms of the people and the environment, then this is THE trip of a lifetime.

Our family of 5 along with our friends (family of 5) stayed on Haggerstone Island for 5 nights over Christmas. From the moment we flew over Haggerstone and landed on Hicks Island, I knew this would be a great adventure. We were met by Sam and Niko and taken by boat back to Haggerstone. Within 1/2 hour of landing on the island, Sam was frying up the best fried fish lunch I have ever had and bringing our bags up from the water with a tractor. The open air accommodations were spacious enough for all of us to spread out and enjoy the quiet and beauty of the island. Our two 17 year old boys stayed in the remote beach hut and felt very independent. They loved it! Even with 6 teenagers, there was not one complaint about no wifi, no television, no phones.....they loved being "off the grid!"
We spent the first day out fishing and snorkeling. All 10 of us caught at least one fish thanks to the help of Sam and Niko, and we got to see the most beautiful reef underwater life snorkeling. We ate lunch on the boat and agreed it was another truly memorable meal.
We were lucky enough to have booked the trip over Christmas and truly felt like we were part of the family. Anna hung stockings for all of our kids on the bar, we drank champagne, Sam brought out the jet ski, Tascha and Roy sang Christmas carols, and we ate the most amazing Christmas duck. They really made us feel at home!
When the power goes out at night, make sure you sit by the fire and look up at the stars. I have never seen anything more beautiful.
Both Anna and Teigan cooked us every meal and I'm still dreaming of the home made yogurt and the morning coffee and pineapple cake.
This island is a very special place with very special people working and living there. If you are looking for a 5 star luxury resort experience this is not your spot. (I love doing that too!) But if you are looking for an adventure, and want to experience a different part of the world and way of life, a simpler life--this is the place for you!! We sat around with our kids and played dominos and cards, laughed and talked, and watched them spear fish and marvel at the great beauty of NE Australia. This was a family vacation we will NEVER forget!

Do you take people to the outer reef for snorkeling?
Answer from Sam T
Boracay, Philippines4 contributions1 helpful vote
Hi Busterway, So the boat heads out to the reef every day to do your choice of Snorkelling, Fishing etc. The 'Outer' reef is situated on the edge of the continental shelf around one hour from the island so we only head there when we have very calm weather. Also if it helps, a lot of the fringing reefs that are sometimes more impressive than the outer-barrier and have a lot more colourful coral-gardens. Hopefully this answers your question, Best wishes, The Haggerstone Team
