If price and location are at the top of your downtown Toronto wish list, consider the Chestnut Residence and Hotel. Years ago, this was the Colony Hotel, but as the name implies it is now a U of T residence that offers hotel accommodations to non-students. The rooms are clean, but pretty stripped down - ours held 2 each of...

Instead of doing "loops & hoops" to make GO bus & transit connections during rushhour in downtown Toronto, I settled on a discounted price of $109 for 89 Chestnut "Conference Centre." It's absolutely a dormitory with student services-like reception. There's no restaurant but a "cafe" or morning breakfast on the second floor. It really is set up for college students...

I recently stayed at 89 Chestnut as part of a sports event in Toronto. I had no choice in my accommodations, so Chestnut it was! I was a bit worried when reading some of the review on here, but kept an open mind. I've stayed at other University dorms before for the same reason (sports) and this hotel-dorm had some...

Nice, big rooms. Clean, comfy bed. Lots of drawers & hanging space for clothes. Nice views, especially from the top floor rotunda. Housekeeping not the best, but OK, especially for the price. Breakfast buffet had a wide choice & was included in price. In-room wired internet can be purchased for an extra $5. Fridge & microwave available in common room...

We stayed at this Residence for 2 nights recently. We had a basic dorm room that was clean, comfortable and all that we needed for our stay. The bathroom was "tired" looking with a leaky shower tap (but really good pressure), some cracks in the sink, pretty thin towels and a bit of rust on the back of the bathroom...

Sometimes you have to put your arm in the air and just say that when trying to save some money you really did a mistake. I think that this "thing" is a dorm for students throughout the years (good luck to the students) and during the summer they rent the rooms out to other people. While the area is great...

I was in Ontario for a family visit and headed back to Toronto for a day (August 9th) before flying home. It was a busy weekend in Toronto and finding a hotel room for less than US$200 proved a real challenge because of several weekend events. I found Chestnut Residence at an online booking site and it seemed okay with...

Even though the Chestnut Residence used to be a hotel, it is now during the academic year a low maintained student dorm. And unfortunately you can tell with the wear and tear on all the rooms - which are then rented out for travelers during the summer break.... So, be prepared for some very rustique experiences and filthy rugs/flooring.... The...

I stayed here because it was one of the recommended hotels for a conference that I was attending. I was a little nervous about it because of the reviews. The best part is the location. It was walking distance to both the University of Toronto and Convention Center and Waterfront. The included breakfast is extensive, as you might expect in...

This is a former hotel that is now a student residence. My room was pretty well the same as what you'd find in a hotel, but it was €15 cheaper than other proper hotels in the area. It had everything that a hotel room has, but it was not quite at the standard of a modern hotel room. I had...

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
