We arrived in Victoria a wee bit later than expected (i.e. 5pm for a day trip to Victoria from Vancouver) so decided to stay the night. The information centre found Fisher House B&B for us so decided to treat ourselves because the bland hotels were about $40 cheaper - probably a little pricey for us Kiwis. On greeting us, Jennifer was very lovely and helpful pointing out where everything was and what we might want to consider to occupy ourselves. The location was about 15mins walk from the Info Centre and in a nice quiet suburban street - perfect for catching up on sleep. I think there are only about 3-4rooms in the place and we didn't hear or see anyone that night so definitely a great place to relax. Room was pretty and comfortable. So not much to complain about apart from the weather the next day. Jennifer cooked a lovely breakfast which was a great start to the day.

Such a lovely spot, located in the James Bay area, near the bus line to downtown. (about a mile to downtown, so easily walkable for some people). Jen Smith, the proprietress, was most helpful with bus schedules to get us where we wanted to go. Our group of 7 occupied the whole place and we found the beds very comfortable and the neighborhood relatively quiet. Jen served delicious breakfasts each morning, and after the first morning, when she realized no one particularly liked the sausage, she offered us Canadian bacon for our next two breakfasts. Jen is most helpful and accommodating, but not overly present. There is a buzzer to call her when you need something, and her phone is available for patron's usage, even long-distance, as I think the B&B has a pre-paid plan of some sort. A refrigerator is available for guests to use, and we enjoyed chilled wine (purchased near by) each evening prior to going out for dinner. Jen runs a comfortable, well organized B&B and I look forward to staying there again when I visit Victoria.

We spent a wonderful three nights here. Jen & Cam are very welcoming hosts who were there to greet us and make us feel at home. We stayed in Room 1 that had its own private bath, but the other rooms simply had a bath across the hall. Our room also had a small deck outside which was lovely to sit out and enjoy the late afternoon sun. The accommodations were excellent, the breakfasts, nourishing and healthy, and Jen was great with places to explore and suggestions for good restaurants. This house is an easy few blocks from water on both sides and access to the inner harbor with all it has to offer. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend.

After travelling in Alaska and Canada for one month we are disappointed to report that the hospitality we received at this B & B fell below our expectations and compares unfavourably with our other experiences.
The accommodation is conveniently situated about 20-25 minutes walk from the main area of Victoria. It is clean with the sole use of bathroom across the corridor.
We found Jenny, the host ,very business like who did not have time for any chat. We were advised on our arrival that breakfast was 8.30am prompt. We were quite bemused by this but she was to her word , not a minute before or after , it felt like a military establishment.
If you weren't down on time , well tough ,the breakfast was plonked down and left to go cold as we saw happened to someone visiting at the same time as us. There was a cooked breakfast every day, there did not seem any choice and unfortunately we did not enjoy a lot of the food she provided .
Worst of all one morning I was down first, sat down hoping that my husband could sit beside me for breakfast . When Jenny entered the room she asked me to move seats to enable some Canadian students who were attending a conference sit together. Two of the students had arrived together but the third was on her own. There was only five of us and the seating arrangement was 2 seats either side of the table and one at the end, so I am not sure why I had to move. I am sure the students who chatted with us daily would be shocked at this treatment. We stayed there for 4 nights and just sat in seats available and no one was displaced for us and would have been upset if they had. I felt like a second class citizen and felt that if I had been a Canadian citizen I would have been treated differently.

We were also disappointed in her advice about trips/sightseeing . She only seemed to direct us to tour companies. We had been on the tour around Victoria which we had requested and enjoyed very much. However when she supplied us with tickets from Butchart gardens we thought we were going via public transport and were quite surprised when it was a tour bus. As we had learnt about Victoria the day before we did not need to be told the same information on the following day. We would have preferred to go on a public bus and it would have been much cheaper for us. Jenny obviously gets some sort of incentive if she sells lots of these tours but she should be advising people of their options, she might not get so many bonuses but she would have happier guests. It is a shame that we have to write such a report as although we did enjoy Victoria our visit was marred and we were glad to leave this B & B.

Response from fisherhouse, Owner at Fisher House Bed and Breakfast
Responded 29 Jan 2014
Thank you, “Dusty34” for taking time to write a review bringing your views to my attention. It is so regrettable that your visit at the beginning of June coincided with a family health matter that may have caused me to seem preoccupied. It would hopefully explain but not forgive, my behaviour in leading you to the misconception that I was anti-British or brusque or too-business-like. As for the matter of putting breakfast out before guests even arrived at the table, this was very perplexing to me as it is something I would never do . And then I recalled that the student teachers you referred to had actually requested breakfast promptly at 8:30 during their 5-day stay so they could reach their conference on time at 9. The fact is that they slept in, and this caused you to misconstrue my intent. If they had told me that that particular morning would be a sleeping in day, I would have gladly kept their breakfasts warm in the oven. Even a note on the previous evening, left on the dining table would’ve alerted me to their change of schedule. Communication is everything, isn’t it? Other reviews on Trip Advisor underline my dedication to guests’ needs by being flexible and responsive; whether it’s for an earlier check-in, special dietary needs, breakfast at a different time, or really anything. I do pride myself on serving healthy breakfasts made with local meats, fresh organic produce and my own baking and home-made fruit courses. With a bit of notice and if I had the ingredients, I might’ve been able to provide you with a breakfast favourite of yours. I encourage you to not be shy about your preferences when staying at a B&B. The B&B hosts that I know are very keen to please our guests. In fact I regularly hear how pleased guests are with my recommendations for sightseeing, restaurants and excursions. Guests find the Butchart Gardens Shuttle you felt mis-led about that gets folks there in 30 minutes, instead of 75 minutes on the public bus, worth the extra $10. On a short holiday, guests usually want to make the most of every moment. Again, I’m perplexed because I usually write the bus numbers on the map I provide upon check-in. But I shall take your advice and make extra sure I mention the city bus numbers to guests who would rather go that way. For the record, I do not accept commissions from the shuttle service, but pass along the slight discount to my guests. Again I am sincere when I say that I do wish you had shared your feelings with me any time during your four-day stay so I could have attempted some remedy on the spot. But, thank you for your perspective. I intend to put some of your well-considered suggestions into practice. Best wishes, Jen

We appreciated the warmth and hospitality (and good cooking) of our host. We were able to walk everywhere due to the central location. The Inn is a well appointed, delightfully clean centagenarian. We look forward to staying there again.

This was by far the best place we stayed at during our road trip down the West Coast, including places that were more expensive! We loved it! We didn't think it was possible to find an affordable (450 plus tax for 4 nights, 3 adults), decent place in Victoria close to downtown. I would definitely book this over any of the chains on Douglas Street, some of which look a bit run down.

I used to live in Victoria so I know my way around, and so when Jen welcomed us on the first day and gave us all these sightseeing tips and a map, I knew she really was giving us the best information. She was very friendly and accommodating. We arrived early, but she let us drop off our luggage and they actually carried all our (heavy!) suitcases upstairs for us while we spent the afternoon downtown.

It's an easy 15-minute walk downtown, but I have to admit that we were sometimes too lazy in the evening to make it back there. James Bay is a nice area as well, with Fisherman's Wharf close to the B&B. This is close compared to the other places which are listed as "Victoria" on here but are actually in Sooke or elsewhere. A Thrifties groceries store is about a 5-10 minute walk from the house, which is very convenient.

My sister and I shared the room with the king size bed, while my mother got the little single room next to it. The rooms were small, but cozy, clean and nicely furnished. The king sized bed was huge and incredibly comfortable. I actually dozed off in the afternoon on our first day. The TV was tiny, but we didn't go to Victoria to watch TV so this didn't matter. The bathroom was in the hallway, but it was our private bathroom.

The best thing about this place, however, was definitely the breakfast. You have to be there at 8.30 sharp and you're at one table with the other guests, so it's definitely an intimate feel which may not be to everyone's taste. But we liked this, as we had some interesting discussions with the other guests which sometimes lasted 1.5 hours. We didn't feel rushed out of the dining room at all during this time.

The breakfast itself was amazing! Jen was very creative with the recipes, and so we got banana-walnut pancakes one day, a zucchini-omlet thing the next, and a bread pudding on another day. This all came with a fruit bowl with a bit of yoghurt on it. It tasted amazing and was definitely enough to fill us up for the morning. The orange juice and coffee were served in nice cups and glasses. Overall, the dining room had an elegant, historic look to it.

The only small disadvantage was that the free wireless internet wasn't working on my laptop. My laptop is Canadian, so it can't be the fact that it's European which Jen suggested. She also said they'd had some problems before with European computers, so if you're desperate to use the internet, I probably wouldn't rely on it. However, Jen's husband (I've forgotten his name) offered to let me print off the ferry ticket on his own computer, so they definitely tried to accommodate us anyway. (Turns out that you don't need the ticket, only the confirmation number.)

So in conclusion, the B&B feels like a pretty intimate place, but very nice and we LOVED the breakfast!

Jennifer will look after your every need. We arrived with wine and cheese in hand. She took one look at our grocery bags and immediately offered to set the table for us. She brought out wine glasses, plates, cheese board and cutlery. Then she suggested places to eat for dinner. After a wonderful night in a very comfy king-sized bed we went down to a scrumptious breakfast. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Lovely rooms, fantastic food, and literally minutes to walk to downtown Victoria. Charming Heritage house located in quiet and established neighbourhood.

Only hiccup was the limited parking availability and awkwardness when attempting to leave the parking spots.

My wife and I were pleased with the room and service overall.

Would definitely recommend Fisher House to anyone else visiting the Victoria area.

My wife and I only required a stay of one night while doing some business in Victoria so we were very happy that one night stays are welcomed. The place was very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. The location is within a short walking distance to the Parliament Buildings, museum, harbour etc.

Just returned from our first vacation in Victoria, We spent five nights at the Fisher House, and could not be more pleased. Jenn was the perfect hostess, cooking a gourmet formal breakfast each morning, answering questions and giving advice, and keeping this beautiful, classic house impeccably clean. We had a nicvely appointed bedroom, as well as a private modern bathroom. The location in James Bay is centrally located, within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, several good restaurants, and local coffee shops with character. We took the Clipper from Seattle and did not rent a car, We were able to easily walk to the city center (by the Empress Hotel), Chinatown, etc. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

As far as I know the Superior Eleanor En-Suite (which is very nice; we stayed in it) is the only room that has a bathroom with it. I think the other rooms share a bathroom in the hall.
