Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Private room (i.e. the most expensive version): no cleaning was done; previous person's sweat on the pillow cases; the torn comforter was "fixed" with tape; super-hot room; killed at least 4 or 5 cockroaches; some bugs must have been in the mattress, since I woke up with huge red patches all over my hands and legs - they itched for at least 3 days after. The guy downstairs was completely unprofessional when such issues were brought to his attention - people like this should not be working in the services industry.
If there is someone with the power to do something about all this reading this review right now, please act on it: this place NEEDS to be shut down asap. I chose it because of the convenient location. The location is great and some other nice place can be built on the same spot or even this one could undergo major renovation under different management. Currently, it suffers from severe lack of hygiene and lack of any effort toward remediation of this situation: this should not be legal! Did I mention I preferred to use the toilet across the street at the train station rather than the one on the floor? When I went to the "hotel" washroom there was water overflowing out of a toilet carrying a pile of brown... you can imagine what! Note that this water made it's way to the shower cabin as well!
How did I make it through the night? I removed completely all bedding and threw it in a corner of the room, on a stained chair cushion (huge stain, seemed like a blood stain). I used my own sheets and pillow with case. There wasn't much I could do about the bugs: I haven't thought of bringing insecticide with me! I just killed them with a shoe whenever I could see one. I used a paper clip to extract the pile of hair that was blocking the drain of the sink and this way was able to make use of the room sink. I washed the entire floor with what I had close at hand: shower gel and paper towels. The only reason I managed to get a couple hours of sleep is because I was so exhausted after all these preparations for the night.
Obviously, I left the next day. In retrospect, waiting for the night to pass while sitting on a bench in the train station next to my luggage would have been a better option and would not have cost me 51 bucks.
It is possible that they may clean the room if you book more than a night, which might explain some of the more positive reviews I've seen. Still, extremely unprofessional and should be out of business in my opinion. It was outrageous. I can hardly think of anything worse for the same cost: perhaps rats in the room besides cockroaches would have made it the supreme experience!
I am so sorry I booked this hostel. I wanted to leave once I'd seen the room, but their policy is to charge you anyway for a night if you haven't cancelled your booking at least 24 hours before your arrival. How is one supposed to know 24 hours in advance what lies ahead? Well, now you can: by reading this review! United we stand: please do NOT stay at this miserable place! Help get them out of business!

I don't understand why this hostel has so many bad reviews.
I was at the hostel for 3 nights. I was in a dorm on the 5th floor. The room was very big, had a fridge and a TV. It was really quiet at night too.

The kitchen was OK and didn't have many pots or pans. The bathrooms were average hostel bathrooms.

Nothing amazing but nothing to really complain about.

Considering how expensive hostels are in Vancouver I was pretty happy with my stay.

From beginning to end this hostel was just totally horrid. I had a job interview and I needed to print out notes because I doing a demonstration; the day of the interview I told the receptionist this and he told me that the weren't aloud to print anything because of company policy, nor would they take payment for any print outs - they had a working printer by the way! I had to make other arrangements which ended up leading me being late for the interview.

It gets worse.. my shoes which cost $80 went missing and it turned out that they were thrown in the bin despite that they were brand new, literally two weeks old!! The same receptionist ended up leading me to where they store all their rubbish and told me that they were likely to be in one of the SEVERAL refuse bags; he refused to help me look for them - instead preferred to watch me search through the bags myself.

Naturally I was infuriated by the whole situation, it was so humiliating that I was even in a situation like this - I told the receptionist that I was going to complain about how crap the service was and he just flipped. He started to shout at me, blamed me for leaving my shoes unattended even though everybody does it and then gave this bizarre rant about how over-demanding and spoiled I was. He was really intimidating by the way, he was very angry looking, tall and stalky. He then went onto say that he thought I was Jewish and how he always get's hassle from Jewish people. I'm not Jewish, I'm ethnically Scottish but it's besides the point. Probably the worst experience I had when I was traveling Canada.

I don't know if he's still there, it's been over a year since this happened but I'd pay the little extra and stay at another hostel.

My boyfriend and I only spent 1 night at C&N but we were not impressed. Obviously we weren't expecting luxury for the price and to be honest we just wanted somewhere to sleep before our Greyhound in the morning, but I have paid less for a lot more.

The hostel is strangely signposted as a different hostel which confused us, but it is very conveniently located next door to the station. The staff member was very friendly and chatty and I like that there was snacks available at the lobby.

The corridor our room was located on smelt quite badly and it was very bare. The toilets are not signposted in any way so you have no idea if it's female or male. The shower was reasonable but not the most pleasant of experiences.

The room was large and had a fridge which was good - however that was the only real positive. The bed was on wheels which was slightly annoying when the floor was wooden. The room obviously hadn't been cleaned in a long time, there was dust everywhere and crumbs from previous guests and the furniture smelt too. The tip of the iceberg though was when I got into bed and jumped straight out when I felt something bite me, only to find it was a beetle/bug, nice!! The room was nice and warm though.

In general, if you can deal with a bit of discomfort for one night before a greyhound bus then this hostel is ok, otherwise, don't bother.

We arrived and the guy behind the counter seemed seedy as.
The place was FULL of creepy builders and labourers, who i expect were working for the Winter Olympics.
I didnt feel safe at all and the fact that the womens bathroom has a key to lock it was a small comfort.
The bar next door was also creepy and there I could hear a hooker outside yelling suggestive things at people all night.
I moved first thing in the morning to SameSun on Granville St.

It was our first night in Vancouver, just one night just for sleeping. Hostel and room smelled like cannabis and tobacco. Our room was in 5th floor, it was very dirty, ash on the table, bedsheets were ripped and dirty. We saw a mouse in the hallway. Horrible place! We checked out one night before we meant, because that isn't place for human. We didn't get any refound for unused night. Never again.

The place felt more like a refuge for the homeless and addicts than a backpackers hostel. Very dated, showers were dirty and the place smelt like people had been smoking cannabis in it. Would not advise

....if u care about cleanliness and a "normal" hostelambiance DON'T go there. As other ppl already mentioned its dirty, the shower is in the same room with only 2 toilets for the whole floor and the washroomdoor has a lock on it. the very friendly guy at the reception told me that is because some of the guys are lazy and they are not as clean as we ladies are... i won't talk about the kitchen cos i didnt bother to go in there since everything was really dirty.

THE GOOD THING was the location, right across the street from the main street/science world skytrain station and only a ten minute walk away from famous gastown. u can also catch a false creek ferry to go to various places like granville island from there.
