Spent 3 nights with our young family in the hostel. The hostel is well run, from the time you get on the boat in Tofino to the ride from the island dock to the camp. We stayed in a family room (really just a room in the admin building), but there are dedicated male and female dorms plus camping. Lots to do on the island and off. Each night gets you a ride to and from Tofino so you are definitely not stuck for your stay. The folks staying there were from all over the world, we met a great couple from Spain who played beach volleyball with our kids! If you are in for a bit of a rustic adventure stay here.

The staff---John who manages, in particular---were so amazing and helpful. I spent three days there and felt totally at peace with the atmosphere. Bear in mind this is a hostel with one large dormitory for men and one for women, plus a couple of private rooms. Bedding was more than adequate and I had no trouble falling asleep.

The train to the top of Lone Cone is treacherous, so check your physical condition and skill level before attempting. That said, everyone who wanted to climb did so and returned in one piece. The view at the top is so worth it.

This is the kind of place I would return to again and again.

The only negative I would add is not the fault of the hostel. I observed that a lot of the kids traveling through here, while they love to cook, and not so keen about cleaning up their mess in the kitchen. Quite inconsiderate I would say, and young travelers ought to learn to be respectful of hostel staff, and not expect others to clean up for them. As I said, the staff is wonderful, and deserves all the praise.

Lone cone was the only available place with hostel beds at last minute in the Tofino area when I was looking to visit. It was also ridiculously cheap for the area, so I didn't expect much from it...

I couldn't have been happier with the place! It is absolutely stunning and the staff are brilliant. It's only been running for a short time hence the low prices and spaces at short notice, and I can guarantee you that it will be hard to get a spot there in a year or two. The island is breathtaking, and the views from the campground are like a tiny slice of heaven. The beds are super comfy and the kitchen facilities were spot on. Loads of space. Massive campfires set up every evening so there's a really easy going, social vibe between the campers and hostel goers.

The sunset from the beach shouldn't be missed. At night you can see the milky way overhead and special plankton in the sea makes it light up when you touch the water. There's a lake with a rope swing and an awesome hike up lone cone mountain. Friendly wild icows even sometimes wonder on site to munch on the grass

Honestly, you'd be doing yourself an injustice if you didn't give lone cone a shot. They even offered to lend me camping kit if I wanted to stay outside.. where else does that?!

I went to Tofino, but unfortunately, every single hostel was fully booked. So I decided to go at the Lone Cone Hostel, on Meares Island. The view was amazing, you feel like alone on a lonely island. Great feeling. But some of the staff was very unfriendly. And there is quite NOTHING on this island to do, than take a walk. So you have to take the watertaxi to Tofino (which is a very nice place with lots to do!) The watertaxi drove just sometimes a day. If you missed one, you had to wait 3 hours for the next watertaxi (It's depend which one you missed).. The last in the evening was around 6pm. It was impossible to take a dinner in Tofino. And if you are travelling by yourself, like me, it's very annoying. If you are a couple, it's maybe not that bad.. And once, I booked a whalewatching tour in Tofino, I had to be there at 9am. And the water taxi at 8am didn't come. So at 8.45am I was still on the island, I was so angry, because the staff didn't inform us why the boat is not coming. And we were about 15 people who were waiting.. They didn't excuse, just nothing. At least I came much to late to my tour, even if they fortunately wait for me, I was very dissapointed.

Beautiful island, nice beach, very quiet. EVERYTHING is dirty and in need of repair. We left a day early because we couldn't take it anymore! Very nice hosts and other guests were lovely. Private rooms are extremely overpriced for what you will get - you will be camping with a roof, no more.

We laughed because one review said "there is literally nothing to do on this island!" Joke's on us - they were right. This place is a liability waiting to happen!

Safety: No safety info provided for the water taxi (life jackets??). Arrives on the island and you climb into the back of a pickup truck/trailer, and the trailer is not properly secured to the truck (!). Cow poop throughout the site. No smoke detectors etc, doors locked with padlocks on the outside of the doors. No life jackets for use with rental equipment (kayaks, paddleboards, canoe). Dock on the lake is connected to shore by a pile of old strewn planks.

Room: stained mattresses and old yellowed/stained pillows. Carpet floor clearly not vacuumed. No garbage cans provided, blanket hung as a curtain. Generally in poor repair.

Bathroom: bucket catching drips under the sink, bathtub coated in a thick layer of mud/sand. Lots of missing and broken tiles in the shower. We didn't use the shower for 3 days because it was nasty.

Kitchen: crowded during peak meal times. Very limited cutlery (2 spoons...). Not enough fridge space, and full of expired condiments etc that past guests have left. Clearly no staff person in charge of the kitchen. Microwaves are filthy. If you are staying here, bring pre-cooked food or cold meals so you don't have to fight for minimal kitchen space.

Response from anna a, General Manager at Lone Cone Hostel & Campground

We are sorry to hear your experience at our Hostel & Campground left you feeling unpleasant! Since your experience with us we have worked diligently to rectify this matters and concerns. We take pride in our beautiful peace of serenity! We aim to escape from the business of life and the zoo of tour season in Tofino! We are sorry that the environment did not suite your needs. Our water taxi vessel has always provided water taxi life jackets - its a liability and apart of our insurance policies and mandatory for all vessels to have life jackets. We will ensure to have our Operators provide informative info on life jackets. We also have a new truck that provides safe transportation for our guests to the Hostel and Campground. The Cow patties have been addressed and we have great maintenance crew to ensure that there is no cow patties on site. Our rooms are well maintained and have revamped our inventory. Our plumber has addressed all of these concerns, we are sorry you went without a three day shower. Our kitchen is a communal kitchen and doesn't work for everyone, we are sorry that this experience was unpleasant. If there is anything we can offer you, please, our team would be happy to help! Thank you for addressing your concerns, this has allowed us to keep on top of these matters. Much respect!

Emailed them this Tuesday to make a reservation. They emailed me back asking me to call and make the reservation. I called two days in a row and left multiple voicemails, no one has returned my call. Called the actual hostel and they say they can't help us because all they do is check people in. Man on the phone became very rude when I communicated my disappointment and frustration that the reservation phone number is not working. Zero customer service skills and this place is obviously not organized enough to even book people in.

Good things I can say about this hostel:
Good for if you want to be secluded in the island as there are a couple of things to do e.g. hike, rent out some canoes go on the beach however we didn't try any of these as we were exploring the main town and other areas nearby on Victoria island i.e. long beach. The only thing we utilized is the hot tub which fits about 4 people and luck enough that it had just been cleaned but I cant guarantee that this would be the case all the time. There is also a rec room which was the only room that felt decently clean and this was a big cedar room that had a pool table and ping pong table.

Bad things about this hostel
As it was on an island away from Tofino we had to catch the last shuttle for the boat to the island at 6pm, however poor signage made it difficult to find where we had to check in at Tofino. And the instructions that the lady gave on the phone didn't help us out either. Luckily they held the boat for us until 6.30 but they didn't seem to happy about waiting for us and it showed.
The issue with the shuttle boat timings were also a big issue for us as we wanted to go do a kayaking tour at 2pm which would have gotten us back at 6.15 but when was asked the hostel to see if they could hold the boat for us they were unaccommodating/flexible about this DESPITE THE FACT that our boat was late and then there were so many people we had to wait for the second run for the boat which was around 6.30/45 which meant we could have done the tour. This is often the case so I don't understand why they weren't flexible about this. I'd suggest for them to have boats that go back at 7pm if they want more people to stay at their hostel.

We had paid for a three bed private room which upon arrival we so was not clean at all. We had to wipe down some of the surfaces. Found 1/2 dead insects around the corners of the room and there were LOTS of mosquitoes in the room which we were not expecting. We had to pay to buy some mosquito repellent/kill as many of them as possible to get through the night. We also found stains on a lot of the blankets which we ask them to replace the next day. No towels were provided.

We had to pass through the kitchen to get to our room and the Kitchen was VERY DIRTY! Staff didn't do any cleaning here and it was all up to the guests to keep this place clean which a lot of people were not so bothered by. A lot of the bathrooms were also not very clean either especially the inside ones The outside one's were slightly better but the womens shower wasn't draining properly so you end up showering in stagnating water.

The view of the beach from the camp site is really good though hence I think it has the potential to do A LOT better.

We arrived later than expected due to traffic. When we got to the office it was closed and no more boats to the island. When calling, the person on the other side of the phone was definitely not helpful to find a solution. So we ended up spending a night somewhere else...
If you manage to get there, the campground itself is beautiful. There are not enough boats to and from the campground into Tofino which makes it impossible to have a dinner/drinks in town (last boat at 7 pm). We felt secluded from the town, but if that's what you're looking for this is perfect. However, if you wanna enjoy and explore Tofino I recommend booking somewhere else.

The place is really beautiful. The island is really wild, the beach is just a paradise and the lone cone trail absolutely amazing.
However, the crew was really not helpful. They didn't answer at our questions, look like really dont care about us. The kitchen was really dirty with lot's of garbages and not clean dishes. The crew don't do the clean. I saw people who didn't work here do all the dishes because it was too dirty.
We booked a tent but we had to go in another tent the first night and changed after because the crew didn't organize our arrival.
And when the woman who work here gave us our second tent, it was really dirty in the tent, with not clean blanket and a mastress so dirty. But she said that she didn't have the time to clean so we had to clean by ourself and sleep with this blanket.... So we cleaned up alone for the price of 65dollars per night, wonderful...
The place is just beautiful and you only pay for that because it is really not a professional crew.

Lone Cone is great, the location on Meares Island is stunning, the handy water taxi to and from Tofino is fun and the staff are all super friendly. The island has hikes and a swimming lake as well as beached to explore. The camp itself is well set out and clean with plenty of amenities. One thing to note is that id you book a private room, they are all off the kitchen so if you want to sleep in, bring your earplugs.
