My wife and I spent a wonderful 9 nights at the Himwitsa Lodge to celebrate our birthdays - which happen to be a few days apart. The suite (No. 5) was very comfortable, extremely well appointed and spotlessly clean and, I have to say, we made excellent use of the private hot tub on our balcony. We received a friendly welcome on arrival and we were quite impressed with the care taken by the staff during these trying times of the Covid pandemic. We found it so nice to be located within walking distance of not only restaurants and the main grocery, but within walking distance of forest and beach trails. Thank you to the staff at Himwitsa for a memorable 80th birthday.

Our family stayed in the Himwitsa Lodge For two nights last week, while visiting a Tofino for the first time. We absolutely loved our beautiful room and my kids were crowing with joy as soon as we entered it. The view is unbeatable (my favourite part), the beds comfy, lots of space, the fireplace was pretty and the best part was the hot tub on the deck. We enjoyed that many times over the two days, starting and ending our day with a hot soak overlooking the bay. I made some simple meals in the small kitchen, which we ate with our five star view. We saw eagles, enjoyed watching the harbour planes take off a couple times, and enjoyed the peace and quiet. We also enjoyed walking to Tonquin beach, and the bakery, and to get anything we needed. I recommend this place heartily - it was so special. The staff (especially Kathy) were so welcoming and kind. I look forward to coming back!

We found this property on Booking.com after we’d decided a big resort was not for us and we wanted to be in the village. It was perfect. We had a large room, with big balcony looking over Tofino harbour and main jetty. We were able to view wildlife in the bay from our bed on some occasions! We saw harbour porpoise, raccoons, bald eagles and otters. Watching the daily toings and froings from the jetty to the local island settlements was also interesting, great for people watching in an environment that relies on boats and seaplanes to travel, supply and get things done. The owners of Himwitsa are First Nations people who made our stay very welcome and comfortable and gave us anything we needed. It was also much quieter than I expected given it was right on the harbour. The only reason I gave it a 4 not 5 was because the kitchen area was very small with little room to prepare meals and the cutlery and kitchen utensils could do with a review as they were quite limited. However, it did not hinder us and we loved it. We bought smoked salmon from the wee fish store down stairs, owned by the family and also, in my view, the art gallery/ shop was one of the best in Tofino and we brought home some lovely souvenirs of our stay there. This was a great local option and I highly recommend it.

I didn’t feel we got our money’s worth. It says ocean view, but really it’s an inlet. It’s not ocean side. You don’t get the crashing waves or the thunderous sounds. Highly overrated in my opinion. We went to the art gallery and I wanted to by a paddle. $1100?? It was literally a paddle with no art on it. Someone took an axe and beat the hell out of a tree and put a big price tag on it. You have to climb up stairs two stories to get to your room. The fish store was awesome though. Great prices and good smoked oysters, and all kinds of salmon. We left after two of our seven days booked and went ocean side.

Lots of amazing and beautiful art and items. Can’t resist and bought a number of items. Inspiring and spiritual pieces. Friendly and helpful staff. Clothing, art pieces, post cards, jewellery, bags, and many other items. Be prepared to spend some money here but it is worth it.

Himwatsa House is a solid choice for your first visit to Tofino. It has clean, large rooms, some with great views of Clayquot Sound, and is centrally located in the very small town of Tofino. Everything is within walking distance. Staff was helpful, and overall, my stay was very satisfactory. The only reason for the overall rating of average is the price -- Tofino overall is an expensive place to stay. Second, I'd probably give room #2 an above average rating (4/5) based on the better price to value ratio (see below).

Himwatsa House is located at the end of the main waterfront road in Tofino. The rooms are located on the second floor above the Himwatsa store/gallery, Sea Shanty restaurant, and a couple other storefronts. Parking is provided for guests.

The rooms are your basic modern condo style; nothing special - not romantic, not outdoorsy, not upscale. We stayed in two of the rooms. Room #5 is a large suite with kitchen, dining area, living area, bathroom, separate bedroom, and outside balcony with hottub. There is satellite TV in all the rooms. The balcony has a somewhat obstructed view of the sound. The rest of the windows look out toward the streets and town - nothing to look at.

Room #2 is a large room, with a kitchen and dining area, and an outdoor balcony (no hottub) with great views of Clayquot sound. And I do mean great - one of the most scenic outdoor views I've had from a hotel room. Unless you need the extra room, I thought the less expensive room #2 was the better bargain since Tofino is all about the amazing outdoors.

The only major detraction was that the hottub water was somewhat "oily" even though it had the typical chlorine smell. I declined to use it much.

Second major detraction might be your expectations. Many people come to Tofino for the beauty of the outdoors, and stay at lodges near the ocean. Himwatsa is not situated in the woods; you are not surrounded by the towering pines of the Pacific Northwest. You are in a very small town with the benefits and minor detractions that entails (the biggest being the occasional noisy seaplane taking off).

I found the balance just right - I could walk out to a cafe for coffee, or get provisions for a hike at the small local grocery store - but was a short drive to the Pacific Rim park.

If you've never been to Tofino, don't misunderstand the "town" characterization. It is a very small town by any standard, and has few of the detractions of urban life, like noise or traffic. My caveat is that I went during the shoulder season of September, so it may be more hectic in summer.

My wife and I chose Himwitsa Lodge as our Honeymoon destination after our marriage ceremony in Victoria BC, June 2003.

I booked the room on the strength of their website and as always when booking anything unseen over the internet your always left with that nagging doubt that you have picked the right choice.

The Himwitsa Lodge exceeded all of our expectations. The room (#3) was spacious, well furnished and immaculate and had all of the cooking utensils you may need, if you want to forsake Tofino's excellent seafood restaruants.

Opening the large french windows to your private balcony, you have an uninterupted view out over the harbour to Clayoquot Sound, Mears Island and in the distance you can just make out the totem poles in the first nations village of Opitsaht (only reachable by boat). To say that this is spectacular is a serious understatement. The icing on the cake?..your own private hot tub on the balcony. One of the highlights of our stay was relaxing in the tub, in the dark, with a bottle of wine with the sea below you and the stars above, Mears island was silohetted by the moon, it was simply magical.

We booked at the Art Gallery below the rooms and that was the last we saw of anyone in charge, your left alone to enjoy your stay, no hassles.

Ok is there a downside? Well I can see one. Located in the harbour are Tofino Airways, a sea plane company. The planes are pretty noisy taking off and I can see this being a problem with some folks, although it did not bother us in the slightest, in fact I anjoyed watched them escape the clutches of the sea !! They also stop flying around 5pm.

Himwitsa will appeal to the traveller who wants a decent standard of accomodation, but does not want to be tied down to meal times. I'd say the standard was 4 stars (UK)

I guess the biggest compliment I can give is that we are returning there in September 04.

We stayed here for 1 night (unfortunately as we would have stayed longer if they weren't booked) last week and it was fantastic. We were in Room #1, which was huge, 2 double beds, fireplace, kitchen, private deck balcony with hot tub, fabulous views over the marina where the float planes go from, big TV and great restaurant downstairs. This was especially appreciated as we escaped a dodgy place that day and had spent a very long day trying to get back to Tofino. Also because of the next night when we had to stay at the Orca (see my other review of that) which was more expensive and 10 times worse than the Himwitsa, in comparison. Tofino is expensive, no doubt, but if you are going to spend the money, I would say spend it here and hopefully your stay will be as good as ours. Nothing like sipping cold wine while looking up at the stars in your private hot tub on your balcony.

Really enjoyed the view from the premier room, room #3, book this one, best view and most privacy, especially from the road, and better when using the hot tub on the deck, great for a couple and works well with kids as well. Nice small kitchen, all you really need, we made several meals in and it worked out very well. Two minutes to the largest grocery store, and beer and wine shop across the street.

Personal opinion, but this has to be one of the best places to stay in Tofino! We stayed one night a couple of years ago when we visited the island and couldn’t wait to stay again.
Only minor downside was that we had a side-facing room, so could only part see the water (rear facing rooms definitely better to watch beautiful sunsets and flying boat comings and goings). Rooms were clean and modern.

How far is this driving from Vancouver?
Answer from Rishi M
Port Hardy, Canada34 contributions36 helpful votes
From Vancouver you will need to board the ferry to Nanaimo, either from Tsawwassen terminal in Delta or Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. If you are coming from Seattle I assume you would be taking the ferry from Tsawwassen. The ferry takes 2 hours, then you have an additional 3 to 3.5 hours driving time from Nanaimo to Tofino. In total it will be at least 6 hours travel time from Vancouver.
