Super cozy with a dining area and kitchen. The bedroom was H O T bro. there was a medieval age AC thing in the living room area, which couldn't really emit cool air all the way to the bedroom. Also the place smelled kinda funny?? could use a better scent.
great service tho; happily give us lots of sugar packets for chai, as well as numerous toiletries and towels. but they asked us to wash the dishes before leaving to avoid a $15 fine? wtf
if the guests before me washed the dishes and not the hotel staff that would suck especially in corona times. they also probs half assed washed the dishes without soap whereas i left them glistening clean. great now i realized i had pizza in a corona plate. fabulous

So...I'm really torn on giving this a 3 or a 4 star review. It's definitely not up to my usual standards but this is Jasper, a town that seems to have only old 70's era properties that are surprisingly expensive (and that's during Covid when prices are lower than usual!). My family and I really wanted to stay in Jasper but we almost didn't due to the poor selection of properties. We ended up choosing the Tonquin because they have kitchenette rooms. Our room had a bedroom with a king sized bed at the back and bedroom with two single (yeah, singles!) in the front which was great for us because our daughters hate sharing a bed. In between the two bedrooms was a small kitchenette with a full range (oven & everything) and fridge. It was functional but tiny with hardly any counter space and no dishwasher. The front room had a table with seating for 4 but the space was so tight we had to move the table away from the wall to eat and then move it back when we were done.

As others have noted, this is a very dated property. There were many places in our suite where the floorboards visibly groaned, the bathroom door was clearly suffering from moisture issues and even though we were on the top floor we could constantly hear people using the stars and walking outside our room (it's a motel set up so there's not a lot of privacy). That said, the room itself was very clean and the beds were super comfortable. A surprising perk was that they have coffee from a local roaster (that they also own) in the room. It's also only a ten minute walk from the town centre and easily accessible to the Jasper Discovery trail and others hikes as well. Although we didn't have a private balcony, the common areas outside the rooms do have chairs and tables to sit at.

We paid almost $200 a night for our suite and normally I would expect a heck of a lot nicer for the price but this is Jasper, a town that seems to suffer for decent lodging. If you've got plenty of money there's some nice cabin resorts outside of town. If you want a larger room with a kitchen then this is probably your best choice. Next time though, I think we'd stay somewhere else and just eat out as there were tons of nice restaurants in Japser that were surprisingly affordable.

Oh, we stayed in late June and the pool and hot tub were still out of operation due to Covid during our stay.

We stayed here overnight on August, booking 3 rooms as we were a big family group. We appreciated that one of the rooms was upgraded to a suite with sauna in it. Though we didn’t get to use the sauna due to a hectic sked, we still got to enjoy the other features of the room giving ample common dining and living space for all 12 of us during dinnertime. We also appreciated that even if we didn’t have to request for it in advance, they placed us in rooms on top of each other so getting here and there wasn’t a problem.

The only thing I didn’t like was it is very obvious the rooms are not thoroughly cleaned. My sis-in-law at the other room saw an empty can of soda still sitting by one of the bedrooms when they checked in while I have seen how the toilet bowl could use some more scrubbing. I also read about this cleanliness issue in previous reviews, and therefore it would be good if the hotel looks into this issue more seriously, especially during this pandemic.

We arrived at the Tonquin Inn at 7pm, had to line up to check in by standing outside the office for 45 minutes along with a number of other guests trying to check in. It was 7:45pm when we were told the room was not ready, (even though check in is at 3pm) overheard this being told to other people and 1 woman said she had been waiting more than 4 hours to check in.

When we finally did check in we were given a long list of what we were to do and not to do, for example take your shoes off when entering the room (this is a pet friendly hotel, the carpets looked like they had not been cleaned in many years and I'm supposed to take my shoes off ?)

The rooms are old and in desperate need of an update.

The temperature when we checked in was 28 degrees, the room air conditioner was not working, also the bed had no top sheet, only a winter duvet, I called the desk and asked why there was no top sheet, I was told it was because of Covid ???? Didn't even try to figure that one out ! They sent a maintenance man with 2 sheets for us to put on the bed and a stand up air fan, he said he could call another maintenance man to try to fix the AC, but didn't know what time that would be, by this time it was past 8pm, we just headed out for dinner and decided we would just get up early in the morning and get out of there.

They have an indoor pool, I think they should have invested the money in upgrading the rooms instead of a pool.

We nicknamed the hotel The Rosebud Motel, if you watch Schitts Creek you'll know what we mean.

On a positive note we had breakfast at the Sunhouse Cafe, it was delicious and we really recommend it, also a shout out to the very friendly and helpful gentleman at North Face, he was great.

We paid over $200 for 1 night, if we had arrived earlier in the day I would have paid the extra and went to the Fairmont.

Big difference in the quality and cost of accommodation offered in Jasper V Banff, glad we were only there for 1 night.

First off, I'd like to thank the staff at the inn for a free upgrade. Getting a kitchenette really was a nice touch and saved the family money on meals.

The inn itself is a bit dated, but it's definitely nice that there is a pool. If more competition existed in Jasper, I think you'd see better options. However, I suspect the federal gov screws things up for business owners. A lack of competition equals fewer options for the public, and Jasper desperately needs more options.

In any case, the inn offers basic accommodation and a good location.
Areas to improve would be overall maintenance (e.g., sometimes we had to take the lid off the toilet to adjust the float so it would flush & stop constantly running water), ventilation (the room was quite stuffy even when the temps were cool outside), and putting in new carpet (the Berber carpet was dirty with stains & rough on the feet).

I would recommend the inn for a short visit if you're able to get a discounted price. If you pay the list price (over $300 for the kitchenette) you will definitely feel like you got ripped off - which would be 100% true.

Compared to Banff, Jasper feels run down & shabby. More investment is needed. More hotels are needed. Time for the gov to get out of the way and let business provide value for Albertans.

Oct. 2022

We stayed two nights in Oct, little did we realize we booked during Jasper's Dark Sky Festival and the place was busy and full. We chose this place because they are pet friendly and have a decent looking pool.

We got a ground level one bedroom suite with a kitchenette. The beds were very comfortable and clean but I didn't like that there was not a top sheet on the beds and I sure hope that the duvet on the comforter is changed between guests. The carpet was stained, probably should be ripped out and a floor that could be washed put in. It had a full fridge, stove and dishes. You are expected to wash your dishes before check out or you are charged a fee. I like that our room was very close to the two outdoor hot tubs. We had a beautiful view from our front door of the mountains.

This is a pet friendly hotel, the website stated you get a pet welcome package upon arrival but we were not offered one. There is a $25 fee per stay to have your pet there. You are expected to let the front staff know if you leave your pet in your room and step out, even if they are in a kennel. There is a large grassy area to walk your dog and a garbage and poop bags provided in this area. There is also a grassy area with a gazebo near the hot tubs.

The pool is good and I liked the hot tub was above over looking the pool. Both nights there were no towels and I had to go to the office to let them know. I saw the gym on the level above the pool but couldn't figure out how to get to it.

There is a restaurant there called the Whiskey Jack, it had a very limited menu but the food was good.

It was a good stay.

The family suite was larger than we expected and actually had two separate rooms with a door separating them. This is a bonus when travelling with children. There was a table that comfortably seated 4 but had to be pushed back to the wall after meals so you could get by. They needed a large mat at the door as you step right onto the carpet off the muddy parking lot. There's a full kitchen and it's well stocked for 4 people. There were very few rooms booked during our stay and we had no-one above or beside us, so we had no noise complaints.

This is a nice place if you are using it as a place to rest after a day’s activity. The location does not offer any views. There are a couple of separate buildings. It is good to let them know you are traveling with a person in a wheelchair as they had to change our room location at checkin. It is an older Inn. The elevator is small when trying to get a wheelchair and a couple of persons in it. The room itself was a good size. The beds were very high off the ground, so a person with mobility would need a stool to get into the bed. The bathroom was oddly designed. The toilet was in a very small room off to one side inside the main bathroom. You had to close one door before you could open the other. Otherwise it was ok. A couple of ramps that you had to push a wheelchair up. So you get a work out. The rooms get hot, but they have portable AC units. It was ok for our short stay, but I would not want to stay too long.

My girlfriend, my friend and I had chosen Tonquinn inn because it was one of the cheaper options in Jasper. Also, we had read that there was a fitness facility that we could use. The Tonquinn Inn had informed us upon arrival that it wasn't available. The hot tub wasn't available as well. If we had known these closures, I would have booked elsewhere. Technically, this is false advertising by the establishment.

The room itself was okay, but you hear noise through the walls and above you. The bathroom sink faucet was leaking, the toilet was very outdated, the AC was loud and the woman at the front desk wouldn't change our room. I had to email the manager about my issues. I can say that the hotel manager was very friendly and when we had forgotten our laptop, she got ahold of us.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel to travelers. Jasper is a very pricey area and you'd expect the hotels to be of better quality with the money that they rake in. Not very impressed.

Well we stood in line to check in, which begins to happen after 4:00. Not 3:58 or 3:59, 4. We were then told our room was not ready but to come back in 45 minutes - to a line again. That's fine if extra cleaning protocols are the new norm, but I found a sock on the couch and dog food under the vent in the bathroom that weren't ours. Gross that's not extra cleaning. But the real kicker was that we were kept up on our last night on the outside parking lot windows and the shared hallway. Smoke drifting into our windows with an AC machine that didn't work. But I called the front desk and also called the after hours security desk at 11:15 (quiet time starts at 11) again at 12:15 and again at 1. No response was given, I left messages saying my children were awoken by the noise. Trust me that's no easy feat, I have a teenager. But the next day at the front desk I said I wasn't happy and was told that there are more Albertans and nothing they could do. I said you could get your after hours security people to shut down the unnecessary noise on private property. Needless to say I won't be back. I can handle noise but to be dismissed as I was isn't ok. Thank goodness security was not absolutely needed I'm not sure what I would have done when they are unresponsive. I was calling at 1:00 in the morning to get the guests to shut it down and finally yelled at them. I paid for the suite I don't expect smoke to fill my room into the late hours of the night as we are kept awake.

I found this hotel of an acceptable standard, my issue was value and service. The room wasn’t dirty as such, just tired. If you can get into the pyramid lake resort it is spotless and stunning. Similar price point but 10 times better in terms of standards.
Answer from Francois T
As we only have a limited number of pet friendly rooms, we would recommend you call the hotel direct to be certain that we have rooms available on the days you plan on staying with us. If you do not wish to book a pet friendly room, then you can "book online without losing money" provided you cancel (if need be) within 48 hours of your arrival. Thank you.
