On arrival we were told all the information we needed by the owner in a very blunt way but that was it, we didn't see any staff member again during our 6 night stay. Our room was clean & fairly spacious with good wifi, location was very good. A great bonus was watching a mother Black Bear & her cub eating fruit in a tree across the road one morning, Tip, if you want to see bears in Jasper drive around in the morning looking out for Parks Canada vehicles as they escort the bears out of town, we saw another mother & cub by doing this, much better success rate than driving around the forest roads

The house is quiet and well appointed. Unfortunately there isn’t any air conditioning and it was very warm while we were there. We understand that they aren’t used to those kinds of temps though, so we dealt with it as best we could. The biggest disappointment was finding an extra charge from them on our credit card statement. When I called to inquire as to why, I was informed that it’s an adult-only place and we didn’t mention children. While it’s true that we didn’t (because at any place we’ve ever stayed children are free), there isn’t anywhere I’ve seen online that mentions they’re adult-only. In fact, the description on Google specifically says kid-friendly. We weren’t given any advance notice of an extra charge either. I guess I’d just beware and make sure to read everything before booking with them. Definitely not a nice way to end our trip.

Stayed for 2 nights in June. Good location, nice looking property, basement room tastefully decorated. But is it a motel room or a family home?
On arrival we were met by a lovely young lady who showed us the room and took our payment. She advised that the owners were away from home for the night but left her phone number should we need anything.
The basement room has a small window which could be opened but there was no air conditioning in the room so it was fortunate the weather outside was cool. Would not like to spend too long in the room as it could become slightly claustrophobic. In the cupboard there is a folding metal picnic table and folding wooden chairs. Bed was comfy, however it would have been nice to have had a comfy chair to sit on instead of having to sit on the bed or the uncomfortable folding chair.
We tried very hard to like this house but unfortunately a few aspects let it down. Having stayed 2 nights our room was not cleaned, bed not made, bins not emptied and tea/coffee not replenished. Also the entrance down to the basement was not clean as something had been spilled on the steps and there was vegetation which had blown down by the wind. Not a good first impression! The owners, who we presumed returned the next day as we could hear them upstairs, did not come near us and the whole experience was very impersonal.
This is a Bed without Breakfast which we knew beforehand but was our one bad choice of accommodation in our trip to Canada. It was expensive for the lack of service we received. We are sorry to say we could not recommend it to others.

These people decided to charge us $100 AFTER we left for having 2 small children, and claiming that they "emailed us."

Tiny room, no vent in the bathroom.

The temp was 90 degrees Fahrenheit and there is no air conditioning.

The bed was tiny, less than a full.

Shady practice. Would not use these people.

Response from , Owner at Fitzhugh House
Responded 30 Aug 2022
Your booking was through booking.com which clearly states we are an adult only lodging. At no time did you advise us of the children in your presences as your wife checked in alone while the rest of the family was in the car. We took her at her word based on the reservation for two adults only. The room is not designed to hold 4 persons. We could have asked you to find other accommodations as you were in violation of our policy. However that would have been impossible in Jasper in August and for the sake of the children you and your family were allowed to stay rather than find yourselves sleeping in your car. An email was sent on the day of departure notifying you of the violation of policy and extra charge via the booking.com site. To state that it did not occur is incorrect. The bed is a full queen as stated in the description on our booking.com page and not less than a full. Once again an inaccurate statement. We always accept constructive criticism which helps us to improve however in this case the your comments are not accurate nor reflect the events as they occurred.

The Fitzhugh's word is no good.

You are definitely confirmed for April 5, the Fitzhugh's email said back in September. See you then!

Uh-uh: the Fitzhugh called a couple weeks before departure to cancel the reservation. We were staying for only one night but then the Fitzhugh found they could rent the room for a longer stay. So we were out. Don't worry, the Fitzhugh said. An alternative place will call within 24 hours with a room as nice as theirs.

Uh-uh: we never received a call from the other place, and it did not respond to my attempt to contact them.

My wife and I found a room on our own, so no big deal. But I thought Trip Advisor readers should know they can count on a Fitzhugh confirmation only if a better deal doesn't come its way.

We booked only two days in advance by phone and the first contact with Patricia was very nice and uncomplicated. We were not able to arrive in Jasper before 9:30 pm on a Friday evening and therefore I asked Patricia whether this would be okay: and it was no problem at all!

When we finally arrived on that Friday we were greeted by her son, who was very friendly. He showed us our room, asked if we needed anything else, received our payment for the two days rental and gave us some ideas for dinner and hiking trips for the next day. It was the first and the last time that we met one of the houseowners.

Since the room is in the basement and has only one very small window that doesn't let sunshine in the room, the room was a bit chilly. I simply list everything else:

Pros:
> quite new and modern rooms, tastefully furnished (with fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and some plates, cups, glasses and cutlery)

> nice + modern ensuite bathroom with large shower and a hair dryer (but no shower gel + shampoo, so bring your own).

> cosy and comfy queen size bed

> ski lockers right in front of the basement entrance

> ample on-street parking

Cons:
> since there is only one small window the room is always sunless and darkish

> there is no chair + small table in the room, so you can only sit on the bed

> there is no place to sit outside (e.g. after a day of hiking)

> no tv or radio in the room (although the technical supplies are already available)

> The owners didn't clean the room during our stay (even the only open garbage can in the bathroom was untouched). But they said they would change the towels if we leave them in the shower or on the floor.

> the temperature of the shower in the morning and in the evening was unsteady (from lukewarm in the evening to hot in the morning)

> the small built-in wardrobe provides only hangers (and since there are no chairs in the room you have to leave all your other clothes in your suitcase). Okay, that isn't a big thing, but when you get ready for bed, where do you put your t-shirt, underwear etc.? There is only the floor ...

> the room was (for our linking) only superficial clean, particularly the floor could have used a vacuum cleaning. But the sheets and towels were absolutely clean!

> the drawers of the nightstands included some pretty old stuff, so it seems nobody takes really care what's in there.

Other matters: make sure you ask the owners for the internet password in case you wanna use W-lan.

All in all: the room itself is nice, if you only(!) use it to sleep, because there is nothing to sit on and there is barely daylight. - you pay and get a bed and a bathroom, that's it. We simply missed at least a bit of the personal atmosphere, that B&B's usually provide. When we left on Sunday morning the owners didn't even notice that we left their house.

I purchased a 2 night stay via the Miss Rodeo Jasper on-line auction for the Fitzhugh House. From the start of reserving a date to the end of the stay....I enjoyed all aspects of the accommodation! The room with a large bathroom, kitchen sink, fridge & big screen TV is uniquely decorated with rustic furniture & beautiful decor. The hosts are extremely friendly & wonderful to get to know. They made the stay in Jasper comfortable, clean & charming. Being close to downtown Jasper was convenient to just walk out & plan a day of activities. Yet...the location is quiet & tranquil.

THANK YOU Fitzhugh House for being a great ambassador for Jasper & supporter of Miss Rodeo Canada!

I would not stay here again. While the rooms were tastefully enough decorate, there was no bathtub and no actual place in the room to sit down besides the bed (no chair, no little table)

IN addition, I found it to be very noisy with the foot traffic upstairs not to mention the fact that I felt like I was in a dungeon because there was only one small window and no way to see the sun or get any substantial fresh air.

Would definately NOT stay here again. Didn't see the owners once and my room was not cleaned during my stay either.

Response from fitzhughhouse, Owner at Fitzhugh House
Responded 15 Oct 2010
It is unfortunate we were unable to meet the needs of this guest. Many of the comments are untrue. There is, in fact, a bistro table and 2 chairs in the room. Further emails with this reviewer were even more confusing as it is claimed that the hallway's table and chair would need to be moved into the room. The fact is, there is no chair at all in the hallway and the table that is there is a sofa table. While the window is not large it affords plenty of fresh air and while there is no bathtub the shower is large, lit and has seating. Quiet time is observed in our home generally between 10 pm and 10 am allowing for 12 hours of relaxation or sleeping time. Rooms are serviced daily. Toilet and sink cleaned, towels replaced as required/requested, coffee/tea supplies replenished, garbage removed and bed made. It has always been and always will be the policy of Fitzhugh House to refrain from touching any of the personal belongings of guests therefore anything strewn on counters, left on beds or nightstands are not touched. Finally, we endeavour to respect the privacy of our guests by having a separate entrance allowing for coming and going at their leisure. If anything is needed or requested we do everything possible to accommodate, all one need do is ask.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The room can easily be rated 5 star yet very reasonably priced. Brand new decor and very tasteful - clean and cosy. One thing to mention that the rooms are located in the basement area, so there is limited natural light, but we have spent every waking hour outside anyways... The owner was very lovely, helpful and friendly. Located on Patricia street, 5 minutes walk from 'downtown' Jasper. All sites, walks, trails are easily accessible. We would definitely come back...
