On the basis of some of these good reviews, we booked for just one night en route to Cornwall, taking a £22 taxi ride from Exeter Airport (and a £20 return ride in the morning). First impressions were that Barton Cross Hotel must have had its heyday in the 1970s, and one can only commend the owners for doing the... More

The photographs of this establishment exactly define what you are going to get with a distinct easy - slow - chintzy -seventies feel. Put it this way you wouldn't want to have breakfast in the dining room with a bad hangover. Certain bits a little worse for wear, but everything ok / satisfactory. No frills. It was a first for... We have spent a night here before, a couple of years ago, but this time we were just there for dinner. There is a lot of comment on tripadvisor about the décor, and it's true that it has not been modernised for some time. But we don't care. The bar, where we were first taken, is cosy and comfortable. We... More

We wanted a good family run hotel not far from Exeter and discovered this one. We had a ground floor room with doors leading out to a small verandah and the garden. There was plenty of storage space and room to work if necessary. We particularly liked the anteroom between the bedroom and bathroom with a small shelf and the... More

Somehow, we didn't realise that the hotel is out of town in the middle of no where, however, it is very nice hotel, run by the owner and his wife. The small bar which was originally a farm workers cottage, was built in the 16th century, and the garden in front of the hotel is stunning. The breakfast was delicious,... More

We found this hidden gem a couple of years ago when our child started her first year at the university and always choose to stay there when we go back. Brian and Gina are the most wonderful hosts and their staff are lovely people too. We really enjoy this small quaint thatched hotel, which is in the middle of the... More

We stayed at short notice in their family room. We booked at short notice and I made a mistake entering the date. They helped and sorted it. Very helpful sorting a taxi to Exeter and accommodating our late return. Clean , quiet and comfortable and a v generous breakfast .... Next time we will order poached egg and kipper to... More

This wonderful thatched cottage hotel has a charming & lovely feel to it. The rooms were clean & tidy & rather quaint & old fashioned which suited the surroundings. Had a lovely drink at the bar before going into dinner. We were blown away by the quality & thought that went into the food. We have eaten in many fine... More

This restaurant was a special treat for our family when exams were passed, birthdays or anniversaries. We had not visited for many years as family grew and moved, on his return from America my youngest son asked to have his 30th birthday celebrations back at Barton Cross. We were 9 in number and we were delighted to find nothing had... More

We are local to this gem and have dined there on numerous occasions. The food is always excellent and the vegetarian choices are different and very tasty. The management and staff are brilliant and the bar area is wonderful. Would recommend this restaurant, as it is a rare find compared to today's trend for 'chain' style eating places.
