I had been traveling around Northern Laos for a week and was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. The setting is beautiful with great sunset views (this was in November). The rooms were neat, tidy and well appointed. The staff were friendly. The Wi-Fi worked perfectly well. I understand that on a comparative it is one of the best in Nong Khiaw. The hotel was full for both nights that I was there and I heard no complaints from the two sets of European guests.
Start with the good pouts: great view; air conditioning; good bed and mosquito net. Unfortunately not balanced by: only cold water at the sink so not able to shave; poor lighting; no shower curtain. Probably great if you are a backpacker.
First, some websites listed the hotel as over 1km to town. Not sure why. You are literally right in the good part of town. The hotel is just off the main road and where all the restaurants, travel shops, etc are located.
The bungalows are fairly large. Kind of a small house. More than enough room for the bed, luggage, desk, etc. A/C worked very well, and there is a ceiling fan too. The A/C was must for us, as at night we prefer to leave the doors and windows closed to reduce the number of bugs (as the bungalow is a thatch type with rattan or bamboo matt walls, bugs still get in). Use of the mosquito netting is a must. Bed was very comfortable. Also, had a refrigerator, which was great to have.
We were originally booked into, and pre-paid, the Mandala Ou Resort. But when we arrived we realized there was no A/C, the room was rather small, and the location was quite some distance from the main part of town (I would estimate at 20-30 minute walk), We decided to see what else was available closer in to town and that had A/C. We were VERY glad we found and switched to the Nong Kiau Riverside.
The staff was very friendly and helpful, as was the owner. Internet was relatively fast (3MB), although it would go down from time to time (but I gathered that was the service in the area not the hotel).
Bathroom was rather small. No counter area. But there was plenty of space in the main room to lay out our stuff. Water was very hot!
Beautiful veranda overlooking the river.
Breakfast buffet was average. A few hot items (meat, bacon, maybe noodles), eggs and pancakes (crepes) made right there. Several fruits, cheeses, breads etc.
Dinner however was only disappointment. Small portions and twice the price of most meals in town (which gave you two or three times the food for half the price). You are very close to the main part of town where all the restaurants are. Maybe 5 min walk, 10 to the farthest ones.
Web photos are pretty accurate of the hotel, rooms, restaurant and grounds.
I would definitely recommend this hotel when staying in Nong Khiaw
This is a review of the restaurant at this hotel and not of the hotel itself.I had breakfast and lunch on a number of occasions at the restaurant in this hotel last August when in Nong Khiaw.I was very impressed. The choice of food for breakfast was quite impressive and very appetising. For lunch the menu was very varied. The food when it arrived was well presented and appetising...Service was very prompt and the staff were friendly...The views from the dining room were simply stunning...Definitely worth a return visit...I am happy to give it 10 out of 10.
Stand alone bungalows stretched along the riverside make these idyllic and very quiet. The beds and pillows were very comfortable and the shower worked great. The bar was nice as well. From here take launches up river close to Chinese border.
